Humidity generation by the 1200 does not depend uponmeasuring the amount of water vapor in the air, but rather isdependent on the measurements of temperature and pressurealone. System precision is determined by temperature andpressure measurement accuracy, and on the constancy of themeasurements throughout. When setpoint equilibration hasbeen reached the indications of saturation temperature, saturation pressure, test temperature, and test pressure, areused in the determination of all hygrometric parameters.

COMPUTER / CONTROL SYSTEMThe Computer/Control System performs all controlfunctions required for humidity generation, as well asdisplaying, printing, and storing system parameters in realtime. The computer/controller is made up of several maincomponents, each with individual yet cooperative functions. The Computer/Control System utilizes a Windows basedcomputer system that is used to read transducers andtemperature sensors; supply digital outputs for control oftemperatures, pressures, and mass flow; and control relayoutputs for control of system power, heaters, heat pump andcirculation pump.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONThe “two-pressure” humidity generation process involvessaturating air or nitrogen with water vapor at a knowntemperature and pressure. The saturated high-pressure airflows from the saturator, through a pressure reducing valve, where the air is isothermally reduced to test pressure at testtemperature.

Virtually all functions of the 1200 humidity generator arecomputer controlled. All desired humidities, temperatures, and time intervals may be programmed. Visual indicationsof system status are displayed in real time on the computerscreen. The automated features of the 1200 allow thegeneration of known humidity levels completely unattended. This frees the operating technician from the task ofmonitoring and adjusting.

DESCRIPTIONThe Model 1200 Mini Humidity Generator producesaccurate humidity values using the fundamental, NISTproven, “two-pressure” principle. The 1200 willautomatically supply relative humidity, dew point, frostpoint, and other calculated values for instrument calibrationand evaluation as well as precision environmental testing. This system automatically generates multipoint profiles aswell as manually entered humidity levels, while continuouslystoring and printing system data.

Temperature Control: Ultra stable temperatures areattained through solid-state thermoelectric cooling andheating of a circulating fluid that jackets the test chamberand associated humidity generation components. Chamberand saturation temperatures are governed by this mediumwhich is computer controlled at any value between 10 °Cand 60 °C using PID (proportional-integral-derivative)algorithms.

TEST CHAMBERThe test chamber accommodates various solid-statesensors, data loggers, chilled mirror hygrometers, andmaterial samples for environmental testing. The 1200humidity generating system incorporates a 300 seriesstainless steel fluid jacketed test chamber, with internaldimensions of 6" x 6" x 6" (152 mm x 152 mm x 152 mm).Access is available through a 1.625" (41.3 mm) diameterport on the right side for probes, cables, sample tubes, etc.

Pressure And Flow Control: Pressure control and massflow control are accomplished through computeractuation of electromechanical valve assemblies.Saturation pressure and mass flow are measuredcontinuously and controlled using PID algorithms similarto those employed in temperature control.

Calibration: Proper calibration of the temperaturesensors and pressure transducer ultimately determinesthe accuracy of the generator. The system employs anintegral programmatic calibration scheme allowing thesensors and transducers to be calibrated while they areelectrically connected to the humidity generator.Coefficients for each transducer are calculated by thecomputer and stored to memory.

APPLICATIONS FOR USEVirtually any humidity and temperature may be generatedwithin the operational limits of the generator. The output orrecording of the device under test may then be comparedwith the generator’s data for analysis.

Environmental Testing: The 1200 can serve as a test bedfor evaluation and R&D of humidity sensors, humiditysensing systems, and humidity sensitive products, e.g.,polymers, composites, film, magnetic medium, pharmaceuticals, soil hydrology, consumables, electronics, optics, etc.

Humidity Sensors and Data Loggers: Insert your humidityprobes through the chamber access port or install the datalogger into the chamber and you can: determine humiditycalibration accuracy and/or characterize humidity sensitivityby subjecting the humidity sensor to a variety of humiditylevels; perform operational checks such as thesensing systems capability to correctly calculate and displayother humidity parameters; determine the repeatability, stability, hysteresis, and drift characteristics of varioushumidity sensing systems.

Chilled Mirror Hygrometers: Install the actual chilledmirror head into the chamber or insert a sample tube throughthe test port and draw a sample through the chilled mirrorhead and you can: verify mirror temperature measurementaccuracy (calibration) when the hygrometer is in thermalequilibrium with its environment; perform operationalchecks of the heat-pump and optical components beforeand after mirror cleaning and balancing; determine whetherthe hygrometer is controlling the mirror deposit in the liquidphase or ice phase when operating at dew and frost pointsbelow 0 °C; determine if the hygrometer is correctlycalculating other humidity parameters; determine thehygrometer’s repeatability, stability, and driftcharacteristics.

Embedded 1200 ControLogTM run screen.
