The online Master's Program in Applied Linguistics at UMass Boston is comprehensive in its scope and designed to introduce students to the theoretical, empirical and practical dimensions of applied linguistics. The distance learning program emphasizes both theory and practice.

Its interdisciplinary core curriculum includes courses in: basic theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and ethnographic research methods, ESL/EFL methodologies and cross cultural studies.

Students pursuing the Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics have a wide range of opportunities, including conducting research, working with community-based organizations, or preparing to teach in various contexts, such as public schools, K-12, adult education, and language schools outside the United States. Many of our students go on to pursue doctoral work in such fields as linguistics, education, and literacy studies. Prospective students need not have teaching experience to be considered for acceptance into the program.

Designed for busy individuals who want to advance their nonprofit management skills through professional development rather than a degree program. Arts Extension Service, a nationwide leader of continuing professional education for arts managers, offers an eight-part series of distance learning courses via the Internet. These online courses teach problem-solving techniques, management skills, and principles for the

workplace. The courses feature written lectures and job-related field assignments. Course topics include planning, board development, fundraising, marketing, and arts programming. Additional topics include program evaluation, arts education and financial management. All coursework is hands-on and provides practical, applied skills to real life situations. Each class is taught by an AES certified instructor who monitors discussions, provides feedback on assignments, and helps students understand principles and solve problems. Students communicate with each other and faculty through e-mail, threaded discussions, and posted assignments.

Are you a community arts leader, artist, volunteer board member, civic leader, or someone interested in the practical aspects of arts management and want to complete your degree? Or, are you considering pursuing a career related to the field of arts management? Gain from the nation's leading provider of professional arts education, UMass Amherst's Arts Extension Service. Courses offered through Arts Administration will satisfy up to 60 credits toward a student's degree. In the first semester, all students take the "Frameworks for Understanding" course - establishing a foundation for returning to college and gaining the skills you'll need to design your degree and create your prior learning portfolio. Most students also take one of these four University Without Walls (UWW) courses in the first semester: organizational life, leadership, technology, or public policy - two of which must be taken prior to the UWW "Writing about Experience" course.

In Arts Administration Individualized Concentrations courses you'll have a chance to apply your knowledge immediately to a case study organization--ideally, your own nonprofit. UWW students in Arts Administration are offered eight upper-division courses specifically designed to help them build an area of concentration in an online format. Students must complete at least five upper-division courses in their area of concentration. Arts Administration course topics such as: Arts Programming, Board Development, Strategic Planning, Arts Marketing, Fundraising, Program Evaluation, Financial Management, and Arts Education.

The Program prepares nurses for a successful career in healthcare. Women's Studies explores women's experiences by placing women at the center of inquiry as subjects rather than objects. It also examines women's lives, voices, histories, roles, and ideas in an effort to understand how women—of various classes, races, ethnicities, sexualities, religions, and ages—have been constructed, identified, oppressed, acclaimed, and developed.

understand human society and to make changes cross-culturally. Gender alone does not yield a full understanding of women's lives, so Women's Studies courses examine other factors, such as race, class, culture, and sexuality.

The field of Women's Studies is multidisciplinary. Calling upon such fields as history, economics, psychology, health, music, and literature, Women's Studies seeks to understand the position of women in society. The interdisciplinary nature of Women's Studies fosters an active examination of the varying influences upon women's and men's lives such as race, class, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, and age. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Women's Studies online certificate program provides students an opportunity to think about the construction and influences of gender in contemporary society, to discover the historical factors that have shaped the current status of women from all backgrounds and countries, and to explore paths to achieve equality for all people. The program consists of five courses.
