The online Master's Program in Applied Linguistics at UMass Boston is comprehensive in its scope and designed to introduce students to the theoretical, empirical and practical dimensions of applied linguistics. The distance learning program emphasizes both theory and practice.

Its interdisciplinary core curriculum includes courses in: basic theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and ethnographic research methods, ESL/EFL methodologies and cross cultural studies.

Students pursuing the Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics have a wide range of opportunities, including conducting research, working with community-based organizations, or preparing to teach in various contexts, such as public schools, K-12, adult education, and language schools outside the United States. Designed for busy individuals who want to advance their nonprofit management skills through professional development rather than a degree program. Arts Extension Service, a nationwide leader of continuing professional education for arts managers, offers an eight-part series of distance learning courses via the Internet. These online courses teach problem-solving techniques, management skills, and principles for the



workplace. The courses feature written lectures and job-related field assignments. Course topics include planning, board development, fundraising, marketing, and arts programming. Additional topics include program evaluation, arts education and financial management. All coursework is hands-on and provides practical, applied skills to real life situations. Each class is taught by an AES certified instructor who monitors discussions, provides feedback on assignments, and helps students understand principles and solve problems. Students communicate with each other and faculty through e-mail, threaded discussions, and posted assignments.

Bachelor of Arts with Arts Administration Individualized Concentrations


Are you a community arts leader, artist, volunteer board member, civic leader, or someone interested in the practical aspects of arts management and want to complete your degree? Or, are you considering pursuing a career related to the field of arts management? Gain from the nation's leading provider of professional arts education, UMass Amherst's Arts Extension Service. Courses offered through Arts Administration will satisfy up to 60 credits toward a student's degree. In the first semester, all students take the "Frameworks for Understanding" course - establishing a foundation for returning to college and gaining the skills you'll need to design your degree and create your prior learning portfolio. Most students also take one of these four University Without Walls (UWW) courses in the first semester: organizational life, leadership, technology, or public policy - two of which must be taken prior to the UWW "Writing about Experience" course.

In Arts Administration Individualized Concentrations courses you'll have a chance to apply your knowledge immediately to a case study organization--ideally, your own nonprofit. UWW students in Arts Administration are offered eight upper-division courses specifically designed to help them build an area of concentration in an online format. Students must complete at least five upper-division courses in their area of concentration. Arts Administration course topics such as: Arts Programming, Board Development, Strategic Planning, Arts Marketing, Fundraising, Program Evaluation, Financial Management, and Arts Education.

The Graduate Certificate in Foundations of Business offers an excellent opportunity for people with non-business backgrounds to obtain a graduate-level certificate. Sharpen your management skills with this flexible general business curriculum and apply the credit toward the online Master’s Degree in Business Administration program. Your certificate courses with grades B or better can be applied to the MBA to reduce the overall credit requirement. This 12-credit, graduate-level certificate program consists of six courses.



Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics

The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics is a blended format certificate program intended for students with a background in health who wish to be prepared to apply current information technology to the management of health care services and information. Courses in this blended program feature a combination of face-to-face and online classes, maximizing the students' convenience, while still allowing them the opportunity to interact with their faculty and fellow students in person.

Many students complete the certificate program before seeking admission into UMass Lowell's Master's Degree Program in Health Management and Policy, and the certificate courses they have taken are then accepted as credits toward their master's degree. Additionally, students who complete the certificate program with a GPA of 3.5 or better are not required to complete the GRE to apply for admission into the master's degree program.

The Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency Treatment Services Program Certificate (A/CDTSP) provides treatment professionals - from direct care counselors to program directors - with a focused, skill-building curriculum to promote successful delivery of substance abuse and dependency treatment. The Online A/CDTSP Certificate Program was created to make the successful on-campus Certificate in Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency Treatment Services more accessible nationally and internationally. With the recent approval of licensure for addictions professionals, the UMass Boston A/CDTSP program adds great value to those seeking licensure and those seeking continuing education hours to maintain licensure. This Bachelor's Degree with an Early Childhood and Education Concentration is an online program designed for early childhood professionals who at one time started a college degree and would now like to complete their first ever bachelor's degree and advance in the field. Through a series of courses you will develop a degree plan to guide you as you work toward your degree and write a portfolio describing learning you've gained from life, work and training experiences, for which you can earn between 15 and 30 academic credits. Students can have training that is considered "college level" and related to early care and education evaluated for credit, with 16 contact hours equaling 1 academic credit. These are considered transfer credits. All courses are taught by UWW and UMass Amherst faculty, and allow you to build a concentration with courses in your area of interest. Early behavioral intervention is the key to successful treatment of autism. Currently, there is a critical shortage of skilled early intervention professionals in the United States. UMass Lowell's Department of Psychology in collaboration with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center has introduced five new online courses that deal with behavioral intervention in autism. Two options Graduate Certificate: Completion of two required courses plus two elective courses enables the student to complete a graduate certificate. This four-course graduate program is designed to provide professionals in psychology, education, child care, speech and language disorders, mental health and human services with an understanding of autism and related developmental disorders as well as an introduction to behavioral methods and how and where such methods can be used and evaluated. With prior departmental approval,



students may apply one of the courses from this certificate towards UMass Lowell's Master's Degree in Community Social Psychology (offered on campus) or towards a Master's Degree from UMass Lowell's Graduate School of Education.

The Instructional Technology Design Certificate Program is designed to meet the increasing challenges created by the high technology training needs of academic, corporate, and public educators. All courses in the graduate certificate program are offered both online and on our UMass Boston campus. The Master's in School Counseling online degree program is designed to meet the needs of a local, national and international audience of adults wishing to enter the School Counseling field. It is a 60-credit master's distance learning which meets the academic requirements for certification in the state of Massachusetts as a School Counselor. The distance learning education program operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete the same program of study. Two weeks of on campus study is required to complete two clinical courses. These courses will be taught the first summer of the program, generally during the month of July. Women's Studies explores women's experiences by placing women at the center of inquiry as subjects rather than objects. It also examines women's lives, voices, histories, roles, and ideas in an effort to understand how women—of various classes, races, ethnicities, sexualities, religions, and ages—have been constructed, identified, oppressed, acclaimed, and developed.

Women's Studies argues that women's experiences are important if we are to



understand human society and to make changes cross-culturally. Gender alone does not yield a full understanding of women's lives, so Women's Studies courses examine other factors, such as race, class, culture, and sexuality.

Women's Studies Online Undergraduate Certificate Program


The field of Women's Studies is multidisciplinary. Calling upon such fields as history, economics, psychology, health, music, and literature, Women's Studies seeks to understand the position of women in society. The interdisciplinary nature of Women's Studies fosters an active examination of the varying influences upon women's and men's lives such as race, class, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, and age. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Women's Studies online certificate program provides students an opportunity to think about the construction and influences of gender in contemporary society, to discover the historical factors that have shaped the current status of women from all backgrounds and countries, and to explore paths to achieve equality for all people. The program consists of five courses.
