trained reigning Victorian

Filly of the Year became a

three-time top-level winner,

defeating South Australian

Repelem in a driving finish

after sitting in the breeze

for the final lap. Bellas

Delight clocked a 1:57.8

mile rate and came home

in 28.6 as she simply out-

classed her rivals. Winning

trainer Kari Males was

thrilled with the perform-

ance of her stable star and

heaped praise on driver

Greg Sugars. “She just

doesn’t know when to give

up, she’s fantastic. And

Greg was sensational. He

knew the horse and drove it

really well,” Males said.

Going into the race, Males

said she had been confi-

dent despite a back-row

draw. “I wasn’t too worried

about the draw because I

felt we had the best horse

in the race,” she said.

“She’s just such a competi-

tor. Everything she does

she wants to be in front.”

Repelem improved vastly

on her last-start failure to

finish second for SA driver

Shakchloe ran third after

saving ground on the in-

side and securing a sprint

lane run in the straight for

last lap, Tubbs and Brunelleschi

shot to the front at the top of the

home straight to score a strong

win over outsider El Paco, who

benefited from a tip-top drive by

with Waikare Patricia finishing

third for Grant Campbell.

Tubbs’ mother Kate, who owns the

daughter of Tennotrump, described

the performance as “absolutely bril-

liant”.

“When I got up this morning I saw

BENDIGO — Four-year-old Classic Adam mare

Town Player, raced, trained and driven by

Sebastopol's Tina Ridis took out the Ted Manton

Memorial Trot on May 3rd at Bendigo.

Sponsored by the Manton family the Trot was

the fifth running of the memorial event. Ted

Manton's son Darren and his wife Debbie and

their children including their son Ashley who

drove the family horse Prettyboy Mitch in the

race were on hand to present the trophy to the

winning connections. Having just her third start

back from a spell, Town Player came from a 20

metre handicap in the standing start event and

raced parked for the entire 2150 metres but

hung tough to beat Pepperell Rose (Greg

Sugars) by 1.3 metres with Kingofthedesert

(Ashley Warton) in third place 5.5 metres from

the winner. It was Town Player's second victory

this season. The 7yo mare bred by John Camp-

bell has now raced 34 times for 11 wins. - David

VICTORIA - Victoria’s racing industry remains a big winner out of the Victorian Coalition Government’s 2012-2013 Budget with significant funding available over the next three years to further grow the industry’s $2 billion-plus economic benefits.

The $79.5 million, four year Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF) will remain a key plank of the Coalition Government’s economic strategy.

Minister for Racing Dr Denis Napthine said the VRIF, made up of unclaimed wagering dividends and on-course wagering taxes, had already had a significant and positive impact across the three racing codes.

"The Coalition Government strongly supports Victoria’s thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing industries and will continue building on the major economic benefits and 70,000 jobs they deliver to the State.

“In 2011-2012 the Coalition Government has supported many racing infrastructure in partnership with Racing Victoria, Country Racing Victoria and local racing clubs.

“These projects have ranged from mini desalination plants for improved irrigation at Flemington through to enhanced al fresco patron facilities at Shepparton grey-hounds.

“We have also been able to support Maryborough Harness Racing Club with its heating/cooling system while Yarra Valley racing is the beneficiary of a $2.6 million redevelopment of its track. Many more projects across the three codes have also been supported.

“As part of VRIF the newly established Raceday Attraction Program (RAP) has helped deliver crowds back to the track including initiatives at Sandown grey-hounds, Hamilton harness and Ballarat thoroughbreds that saw massive increases in attendances.

“The Coalition Government will continue to work with clubs and the controlling

bodies using the RAP to generate further innovative ways of promoting and en-hancing the raceday product.

“The Coalition Government’s support for Victoria’s breeding industries has also been widely welcomed. In the upcoming racing seasons, this funding will start to have a real impact.

“The creation of VOBIS Gold in the thoroughbred industry and enhanced GOBIS (greyhounds) and Vicbred (harness) programs has provided a great deal of confidence in breeding and racing horses or dogs in Victoria,” Dr Napthine said.

"All of these initiatives are aimed not just at improving racing, but at growing the industry, growing the economic benefits from the industry and, importantly, growing the jobs generated by the industry," Dr Napthine said.
