TABCPORP PARK MELTON

Outstanding four-year-old

Bellas Delight scored back

to back Vicbred Mares Final

victories at Tabcorp Park on

Friday, May 3rd.

In a stunning performance

the daughter of Bettors

Delight scored her 11th win

from 26 starts and her fifth

victory in succession taking

out the $100,000 Group 1

Empire Stallions Super Se-

ries Final.

The Paul and Kari Males-

trained reigning Victorian

Filly of the Year became a

three-time top-level winner,

defeating South Australian

Repelem in a driving finish

after sitting in the breeze

for the final lap. Bellas

Delight clocked a 1:57.8

mile rate and came home

in 28.6 as she simply out-

classed her rivals. Winning

trainer Kari Males was

thrilled with the perform-

ance of her stable star and

heaped praise on driver

Greg Sugars. “She just

doesn’t know when to give

up, she’s fantastic. And

Greg was sensational. He

knew the horse and drove it

really well,” Males said.

Going into the race, Males

said she had been confi-

dent despite a back-row

draw. “I wasn’t too worried

about the draw because I

felt we had the best horse

in the race,” she said.

“She’s just such a competi-

tor. Everything she does

she wants to be in front.”

Repelem improved vastly

on her last-start failure to

finish second for SA driver

Ryan Hryhorec, while

Shakchloe ran third after

saving ground on the in-

side and securing a sprint

lane run in the straight for

Rebecca Bartley.

The disappointment of the

race was Jayne Davies-

trained Aussie Made

Lombo, with the former

superstar juvenile off the

bit and struggling a long

way from home before

winding up second-last for

driver Chris Alford. Males

said Bellas Delight would

now have a freshen-up be-

fore contesting the Breed-

ers Crown series later this

year.-with files from Cody Winnell

that gave us the race more

able to get him around

there.“He’s maturing very

nicely. 1:55.4 -- that’s do-

Bacchus Marsh trainer-driver Amy

Tubbs enjoyed Group 1 glory with

Brunelleschi in the Empire

Stallions Vicbred Super Series

Three-Year-Old Trotters Final at

Tabcorp Park Melton, on May 4th.

Despite sitting three-wide for the

last lap, Tubbs and Brunelleschi

shot to the front at the top of the

home straight to score a strong

win over outsider El Paco, who

benefited from a tip-top drive by

in-form reinsman Nathan Jack,

with Waikare Patricia finishing

third for Grant Campbell.

Tubbs’ mother Kate, who owns the

daughter of Tennotrump, described

the performance as “absolutely bril-

liant”.

“When I got up this morning I saw

the trophy sitting on top of the fire-

place and I realised then it wasn’t

just a dream,” she said. Tubbs gave

a celebratory salute crossing the

line, clearly delighted with her

victory.

Race favourite Shes An Image was

under pressure before the straight

and could only manage fifth.

They've got Black

Caviar in Australia

but we have I Can

Doosit in New

Zealand,"

AUCKLAND - NEW ZEALAND: Trainer-

driver Mark Purdon already knew I Can

Doosit had gone to another level but the

clapping and cheering which greeted him

long before he hit the winning post in the

$150,000 Canam Rowe Cup on Friday

May 4th at Auckland’s Alexandra Park

signalled that everyone else knew it too.

The applause broke out soon after the

champion trotter put paid to his rivals

with an electrifying burst on straightening

that took him more than five lengths clear

in a twinkling. And it continued when his

winning time was announced as the fast-

est in the history of the event, his

4:05.08 for the 3200 metres closed off

with sectionals of 57.2 for the 800 and

28.4 for the 400, times normally run by

pacers. His feat of winning back-to-back

Rowe Cups and notching his 12th straight

win drew praise from all quarters, Auck-

land Trotting Club president Rod Croon

talking of a superstar having been

born."They've got Black Caviar in Australia

but we have I Can Doosit in New Zea-

land," he said before inviting 12-year-old

George Breckon to accept the trophy.

That improvement has also given Purdon

the confidence to now consider a north-

ern hemisphere campaign with the 6-

year-old next season.. And watching on,

dad Ken and mum Karen seemed almost

as proud of the speech which followed as

of the stunning season-closing perform-

ance which took I Can Doosit's bankroll

to a massive amount of $1,181,703.

Purdon said I Can Doosit's eight-length

annihilation in last week's Anzac Cup

gave him the confidence to make his

searching mid-race run to claim the

d e a t h s e a t a t t h e b e l l .

"Until last week he'd won a lot of races

this season but he'd also had some lovely

runs. "But he's definitely gone to a new

level in the last month. He's a real cham-

pion now."Purdon and Ken Breckon will

meet to discuss a plan while I Can Doosit

takes a break – he's headed home to

Breckon Farms, near Te Awamutu , where

he was born and raised.

BENDIGO — Four-year-old Classic Adam mare

Town Player, raced, trained and driven by

Sebastopol's Tina Ridis took out the Ted Manton

Memorial Trot on May 3rd at Bendigo.

Sponsored by the Manton family the Trot was

the fifth running of the memorial event. Ted

Manton's son Darren and his wife Debbie and

their children including their son Ashley who

drove the family horse Prettyboy Mitch in the

race were on hand to present the trophy to the

winning connections. Having just her third start

back from a spell, Town Player came from a 20

metre handicap in the standing start event and

raced parked for the entire 2150 metres but

hung tough to beat Pepperell Rose (Greg

Sugars) by 1.3 metres with Kingofthedesert

(Ashley Warton) in third place 5.5 metres from

the winner. It was Town Player's second victory

this season. The 7yo mare bred by John Camp-

bell has now raced 34 times for 11 wins. - David
