What do I get? When you collect an iPad from the school, you will receive the following items:

• A 32GB Apple iPad 5th Generation• An Apple lightening USB lead • A mains Charging plug • A Specks iPad case

Your iPad must be kept in the protective case at ALL times. The iPad and protective case must not be vandalised in any way – I.E drawn on, ripped, attach stickers, etc. The iPad is not insured if it is taken out of the case.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) and internet filtering Every iPad has been pre-configured with our MDM software and internet filters. Each day that you use your iPad, you will need to open Safari and log to use the internet. When you open Safari and try to open any webpage, a screen asking for your username and password will appear as seen in the picture below. You should enter the same username and password that you use to log in to the school computers.

As you can see, I have entered my student login HowiesonN16 and my password. Once you have filled this in, you can either click on the “Authenticate” button or click the enter key on the on-screen keyboard.

Setting up your school email Every student at Chesterton Community College has been provided with a Microsoft Office 365 account, which includes email. Your teachers will use this account to send and receive pieces of work to you and we will be using it to communicate important updates. To set this up, start by opening the settings and select the Mail, Contacts and Calendar menu option.

With this menu pane open, select the Add Account button at the top.

Students should select the Exchange option which is the second on the list of email providers supported by the mail app.

You will see that a pane opens up for you to fill in your account details. Again, your email address uses the username and password that you use to log into the school computers.

You can see in the picture above that I have filled out my account details with the email address of my school username followed by @chesterton.cambs.sch.uk. You will be able to tell if you have filled these out correctly when you click on the next button, signified by a tick next to each box as above. You will then be able to choose which items you want to synchronise. Once complete, you will need to setup a four-digit pin on your iPad; this is a requirement of having your email on your iPad.

On some occasions the server does not return an account and you are shown another page to fill in some more details to identify the account. These details are shown in the picture below.

You can see that the username is the same as the email address and that the server is outlook.office365.com. The domain should remain blank.

You should keep your Apple ID to yourself and you should not share this with your friends. Any apps, books or other software will be linked to your new Apple ID so you will need to remember the password.

If you have any problems setting up an Apple ID, a member of the ICT team will be able to help with this at the appropriate time. There is an iPad surgery advert at the back of this guide. Please do not ask for this during lesson times, as it is a lengthy process.

Activating your Microsoft OneDrive account Alongside your school email address, the school has also provided an online storage facility known as OneDrive. This gives you a large area to store all of your work online so that you can access them anywhere in the world from any device.

Before you can begin saving your work in the OneDrive cloud storage area, you must first activate this account. This can be done by logging on to the office 365 portal, https://login.microsoftonline.com on any browser. You will need to use your school email address once again, along with the password you use to log into the school computers.

Once logged in, you will need to click on the OneDrive link at the top of the page.

This will show a screen that says your account is being setup.

You will also be able to use many Microsoft office programs on this website.

Getting started with Microsoft Word app You are likely to be asked to use the Microsoft Word app to complete some of your work. Your school account comes with the ability to use the full functionality of this app for free. Once again you are going to need your school email address and your password for logging into the school computers.

Begin by downloading the Word app and opening it.

When you open the Word app for the first time, you will be presented with the screen shown on the left. This talks you through the basic benefits of using the Office 365 subscription.

The very last slide asks you to sign in or create an account. As we have already purchased and assigned a license to you, you can click on the Sign in button

Using Microsoft Word app and saving to OneDrive If you have not yet activated you OneDrive account, you should go back to Page 8 of this guide and follow the instructions for activation. If you do not do this, you will not be able to save documents to your OneDrive account.

Upon starting the Word app, you will see that it is much like opening Word on a computer as you would in your ICT lessons. You can select from many templates, blank documents or open a saved document. This is shown in the picture on the left.

In the picture on the left, you can see that we have opened a blank document and added some text. It is important to know that unless you save this document, it will be lost. To save a document, click on the icon next to the back button so that the save menu appears (right)

Several save options are shown when you name your document. We would recommend using the highlighted option of saving to your OneDrive account. Work saved here will be available on any device meaning it would be accessible if something happened to you iPad.

Lost iPad?If you have lost your iPad don’t panic. The first step you should take is to go back to your previous lesson and see if it is still in the classroom. If not then check with your teacher and see if they picked it up and kept it for you. If you still can’t find it then come down to ICT and we will have a look in our lost and found iPad box to see if it was handed to us. If we have your iPad then we will ask you a couple of questions to confirm that the iPad is yours. Once you have confirmed this, then you can take the iPad away. If it is not in IT, then we may tell you to have another good look round your previous lessons and possibly even to check with your tutor. Also have a good look at home, just in case you have left it there without realising. If you cannot find your iPad in any of those places then come back to IT, and we will try to track it down using our tools. If you have left your iPad with your name as the iPad name then we should be able to figure out where it last was in the school and may be able to track it for you. Any lost iPads that cannot be found will be a chargeable replacement. However, if your iPad has been stolen, the police should be contacted and a crime number will be given. If this is then shown to a member of the IT department, your iPad can then be replaced under the scheme.

Lost/broken charger? If your charger is faulty then the IT department will test it and if needed will replace it. However if you have lost your charger, a replacement charger will come with a charge of £25.

Please do these 3 tasks as soon as you receive your iPad to help us be able to track your iPad as quickly as possible

1. Change the iPad’s name to your school computer username. Go onto the settings app > General > about > Name

this will help us attempt to track your iPad through our wireless access points, and hopefully pinpoint which room the iPad was last in.

2. ‘Find my iPad’ iCloudOnce you have set up an Apple ID account for your iPad as shown on page 5 – 8 you will be able to sign into iCloud on your iPad using the same login details.

Go onto the settings app and scroll down to iCloud and sign in using your apple ID.You should then see the ‘Find my iPad’ feature, please ensure this is activated.

‘Find My iPad’ will be able to pinpoint the location of your iPad, erase all sensitive data on the iPad if it has been stolen and there is also a feature make your iPad produce a high-pitched sound to help you find it in a room.

3. Give your iPad a passcode

It is essential that you add a passcode to your iPad so that no one else other than yourself can access your data on your iPad. IPads with passcodes on are more likely to be handed back to the ICT department.
