A Message From

DARRIN PIKE CEO/DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

This school development report for the 2012-13 school year outlines your school’s successes and highlights in matters such as student achievement and professional development. The planning and execution of a school development plan is an important process that must be undertaken by the entire school community. A thorough plan lays the foundation for a productive and successful school year and will be beneficial to every member of the school community, most importantly the students of your school. As we move ahead with the development of a new strategic plan for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District I thank our administrators, teaching staff, school councils and school communities for their efforts in developing and implementing the previous plans to ensure student success and achievement. Such collaboration is important to grow together as a school community for the betterment of our education system. I look forward with great enthusiasm to the progress we are going to make as we build upon these school development plans and continue to provide a quality education for every student in our province. Sincerely, Darrin Pike CEO/Director of Education

Principal’s Message

On behalf of the staff of Mobile Central High, I am pleased to present the 2012-2013 annual School Development report. The report highlights many of our schools accomplishments and provides a platform for future development which will promote academic success. This past year both internal and external reviews were conducted on our school. Through this process many commendations and recommendations were identified and were used to further strengthen School Development and ultimately support Mobile’s commitment to success. The information provided was utilized and helped shape our new four year School Development plan. The two goals that were formed are: Goal 1: To increase student achievement through 21st century learning practices in an inclusive environment. Goal 2: To continue to provide and promote a respectful and safe school environment for all members of the school community. Mobile Central High is committed to supporting all students to ensure that they achieve academic success. We will continue to engage in consultations between our educators and home to assist all students to achieve to their potential. Our staff and community volunteers help provide extra-curricular and co-curricular activities that have been showcased both provincially and nationally. The students of Mobile Central High have provided stellar performances and have been true ambassadors for their school and communities. I would like to extend gratitude toward our entire team of teachers, staff, students, parents and community partners for their collaborative efforts to build a new plan that will ensure a safe and caring culture that focuses upon academic success. Thank you for your continued support and dedication. Gary Petten, B.PE.,B.ED,M.ED.

School Council Message

Mobile Central High School Council met regularly in the 2012-2013 year to discuss various topics ongoing at the school. Each meeting was well focused with an agenda in place: school development, student council report, administrative report (including such things as fundraising , academic achievement, graduation etc.) and other items as addressed by the council. A focus this year was school development as the school was creating a new school development plan for the next four years. Each meeting involved a detailed discussion about the process and plan. In the fall of the year, teacher representatives and administration outlined the plan for the year. Two PD days in November began the internal review process. Such things as developing strengths and challenges and creating teams to develop a tentative plan centered around an academic goal and a safe and caring schools goal were discussed. Updates were given at each meeting. In the winter, another PD day enabled teachers to engage in developing goals, objectives and subsequent action plans. Some concern was expressed about whether some suggestions could be actioned, with a plan in place to identify the problems and how to better action specific objectives. School Council was interviewed by the external review team in April. As a whole, it was a very positive process. One suggestion was given to the external review team - the school council community and parent reps would have liked to be more involved in the internal review process. This was a recommendation from the external review team. The one year plan and four year plan were presented to the council after the external review process. Council role in this process was discussed. The council can support the plan in many ways: parent/community meetings and presentations about such things as drug awareness and mental health issues to support the safe and caring schools goals; awards banquet involvement as part of PBS; questions about academic achievement and the like. Overall, school council meetings were quite successful. Each meeting was very focused with a clearly outlined agenda followed each time. The school development process is a very positive experience and the school council will continue its involvement in this process this new school year. Sincerely,

Tanya Wall Teacher Representative on School Council

Our School Community Mobile Central High School is located on the scenic Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The school has 241 students from grades 7 to 12. The total population of the area served by the school is approximately 3500, spread out in the two larger communities of Bay Bulls and Witless Bay, and in five smaller communities consisting of Mobile, Tors Cove, Burnt Cove, St. Michael’s and Bauline. Mobile High School is under the jurisdiction of the Eastern School District.

Mobile High School has a total of 18 full time and part time staff which includes Administration, Categorical and Non-Categorical Special Education Teachers, as well as classroom teachers and specialist teachers in the areas of guidance, music, physical education, technology and learning resources. We also have 2 student assistants. In addition to staff based at the school, we have itinerant services for speech-language pathology, hearing impairment, visual impairment, and education psychology. Secretarial, maintenance, and custodial support services are also provided. Programs Provided Mobile Central High school offers the provincially prescribed curriculum in grades 7 to 12. We offer a rich program of arts to our students. Our Music programs consist of junior and senior choir, junior and senior guitar, a rock band and guitar club. Our Art club provided many of our students the opportunity to demonstrate their drawing and painting talents. Our students also have access to public speaking and media production. In addition to the academics and arts, we also provide an excellent athletic program to our students. This program allows students to participate in many in-house and varsity activities. We have both male and female teams in the junior and senior divisions in a wide variety of sports. Key Highlights/Special Projects Partnerships It is abundantly clear that academic excellence can only be achieved through mutual cooperation between home, school and community. As part of our Mobile School Development Plan, we have identified a host of individuals, families and small and large business owners willing to assist the school financially through direct donations to the Mobile High School Scholarship Fund. Our Awards Night and Graduation Ceremony has grown exponentially to include nearly one hundred individual scholarships that are awarded to students from grades 7 to 12. Many community groups utilize the school such as the 50+ Club events and Girl Guides.

Additionally, we have entered into a partnership with the Penney Group of Companies who have made a substantial contribution to the school in both human and financial resources. Mobile High School has also developed, in partnership with the Pennecon Group of Companies, a successful Student Workplace Program. This student workplace program is an important part of our intervention program for at risk students. Students enrolled in the program undertake a course in Welding at Northland Construction one day of each week. Signature Cabinets donated over $6000.00 worth of display cases to highlight our students many achievements. Mobile Central High would also like to personally thank the following community sponsors who generously give to the Mobile Scholarship Fund each and every year.
