Mix and Match Number Cards

These cards can prepared in two different ways according to the level of your class. The first way is to simply cut the cards in half, keeping the numeral and written number together on half of the card. This will make it easier for students to match the two halves.

+A more difficult way to pepare the cards is to cut all three sections apart and have students match all three. If you want to make this activity self checking make sure to mark the backs of the cards before laminating and cutting.

Please note that for this activity the m&m pack will stand for 10 and the individual candies for ones.

Add ‘em Up Domino Cards

Here is another activity that can be used several different ways according to the level of your students and your own preferences.

You can use these as quick flashcards for a small group activity. Hold them up and see how quickly students can give you the total of the two sides.

Students can play a “war’ type game with each of them flipping over a card at the same time. Whoever says the correct sum of the m&m’s on his card first wins both cards.

You can cut each of the cards inhalf and use for a greater than less than activity.

Use your imagination and let these cards work for you!

These cards also include

those very important

doubles.

Complete the Patterns

Print and laminate cards. You can choose to keep all of the strips together on the page, or cut apart to have separate pattern strips to use. (I cut the pages in half so I have 3 strips per card).

Students use m&m’s to complete each of the patterns.

There are also blank patterning cards for students tomake up their own patterns for themselves or for each other to complete.

This game gives lots of practice opportunities for your students to practice counting by tens and ones.

Includes two spinners and 24 bingo cards (complete spinners by adding a paper clip to the middle of each spinner using a brad).

Students take turns spinning the spinners, the first spinner telling how many tens in the number, and the second supplies the number in the ones place. Each time a number is spun, all players check their m&m jar cards for the number. Anyone who has the number on their card covers it with an m&m. The student who covers all the m&m’s on their card first is the winner. For a shorter game you can also set a timer. Whoever has the most numbers covered when the time is up is the winner.

Spin a ColorBoardgame

This is a game which uses 5 colors of m&ms to advance around the board. Each students should have some kind of a marker or a piece (each student could have a different color m&m as one possibility). Add a paper clip to the center of the spinner using a brad. The students take turns spinning the spinner. Students must spin a red or a switch to get on the gameboard. If a student spins a red, they place their marker on the first circle with the red m&m character in it. When a student spins the “switch” symbol, they can switch their piece with any other player’s piece on the board -- even for their first move.Student then take turns spinning the spinner an moving their piece to the next picture that corresponds to that color (see list for items and colors). As players get near the end they must spin a yellow to finish the game.

Estimate, Sort and Tally

This is your standard graph and tally activity, the one most often used with m & m’s. In this version students get a bag of m&m’s (usually plain) and first guess or estimate how many m&m’s will be in their bag. I usually have my students do this without opening the bag. By feeling and guessing the weight they come up with a guess.

Students then fill out the top part of the worksheet before opening their bag. After they have filled out the top part of their worksheet they open, count and sort their m&m’s. I have included two versions of the sorting and graphing pages. The first is in color. The second, is in black and white. You can have the students color in the balck and white version to save on ink.

After counting and sorting their m&m’s students fill in the next 3 sentences of the worksheet.

Finally, students color in squares on the graph for their candies and fill out the final portion of their worksheet. The writing is an open ended sentence for students to complete.

When students have completed the writing, they get to the best part of all ... enjoying their candies! Yummmmm...
