A New Year Message

FFFF ilipinos have always been a “happy people” in spite of

the circumstances they are in. As I write my message today, the television is on. Right now, I am also thinking about the agony of a beloved family who is on the threshold of death. It is quite difficult though. But I have no choice to go through every aspect of life.

The Christmas light, decors, and music are breaking out all over the country as the season of goodwill and gift-giving get underway. To s ome , t h e y a r e s i g n s o f commercialism. Yes, it may be true but as far as we know, whether this is business practice or not, for us Filipinos, it is a time for family bonding… a time for the celebration of life of our Lord Jesus Christ, and a time for the coming of a new year.

Family does not only mean our own family. Family also means the place where we work. MLI began the Spirit of Christmas through an exchange - gift followed by a get-together celebration the next day on December 22 in our campus. It was participated by teachers, students and staff.

Our special thanks go to all of you who have helped support all our events that helped students achieve their learning goals…

Thanks to all of you …who have burned their candles at both ends just to be able to finish their work well and good ….for teachers who decked the halls with balls of holies… those who enlivened our events with contests and games …those who gave their special numbers by singing and dancing …those who helped in making the tributes for our outgoing teachers and staff …those who surprised us with unexpected and smothering care on our birthdays ….those who really did their jobs with passion Our sincere gratitude! Coordinator, Mr. Ken Amante danced with Teachers Maricel Candongo, Lina Tavera, Stella Peleo, Jen Leuterio, Jeff Saligumba, Marie Fe Agustin, Rose Lopez and The Chronicle Moderator, Ms. Rhina Reyes to the tune of dance hits: Teach Me How to Dougie, Run the World and Super Bass. University students Ray (Choi Tae Hee), Lily (Lee Joo Eun), Stella (Yun Chanmi), Kevin (Jung Hyosuk), Kelly (Song Ji Young) and Ed (Kim Bo Ram) also surprised the audience as they sang the phenomenal Christmas hit Last Christmas. They were all trained by the same teacher, Ms. Tara Tupas. Hannah Jeong, on the other hand, delivered a superb number by playing the keyboard. Completing the event was the song number from the Management and staff headed by MLI School Master, Ms. Tess Gutierrez, Human Resources Officer, Mr. Gerard Manalo, Ms. Sol Ting and Richard Nogales as they sang a medley of Christmas songs for everyone. A series of parlor games also enliven the Christmas event supervised by the following teachers: Ms. Pinky Sanguir, Mr. Alejo Bebedor and Ms. Rizalyn Dumol. The games were participated in by both teachers and students. Providing humor to the program were the special awards handed out to recipients who best fit certain criteria. Among the awards given were Me Already!, Stressed Much? and Nandiyan Ka Pala! Winners of the said awards were: Ms. Tess Gutierrez, Mr. Gerard Manalo, Ms. Sol Ting; and Teachers Sherlyn Abao, Hiedee Corpuz and Ken Amante. The program concluded with a final performance from Teacher Marion Balladares singing Kaleidoscope World as he bid goodbye to his MLI family. The Future of North Korea

After the Death of Kim Jong-Il

On the 19th of December, state-run media in North Korea reported that North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Il died of a heart attack on the 17th of December. Foreign press as well as Korean people was shocked when they heard about his death. He ruled the communist nation with an iron fist. He was 69 years old.

Now the Korean peninsula is in a gloomy situation because of his

death. Kim’s death is expected to have a significant impact on the Peninsula and East Asia. Skepticism about his heir-apparent son, Jong-Un has also been raised if he would be able to take over the totalitarian nation as smoothly as the leader did after the death of the national founder, Kim Il-sung in 1994.

I can imagine three scenarios about the future of North Korea:

First, North Korea can be in a state of civil war. As a former military officer, I learned that many North Koreans were awakened by the realities of life. They have complaints about North Korea’s military authorities. Particularly, these days “Jasmin Revolution” (started in Africa) has created political and social changes in the world and they were shaken a little by the revolution so a civil war might break out.

Second, someone can stage a military coup. Presently, the leader’s son, Jong-Un is 29 years old. The high-ranking officials in North Korea think he is too young to lead the country and they might scramble to occupy his seat.

On the contrary, his son, Jong-Un can succeed to the throne successfully. Although he is young and his ability isn’t verifiable, the press and the people around him think he is extremely obstinate and is full of ambition so he resembles his grandfather and national founder Kim Il-sung in many aspects. Also, I heard Jong-Il prepared for many things to cope with the unexpected. Actually he had trained Jong-Un to be his successor a long time ago. Many high-ranking officials in North Korea as well as Jong-Un himself want to maintain their immense power and be able to strengthen it in a communist and dictatorial government.

Clearly, the instability in the Korean peninsula will continue for some time. However, I think the possibility of a war between the North and the South is quite low because North Korea doesn’t have the ability to last a war and most national dignitaries don’t want that the war to happen. But we have to realize that provocation by North Korea will still remain.

MLI CONDUCTS 3RD FEEDING PROGRAM

To spread the spirit of giving especially this Christmas season, Modern Languages International once again conducted another Feeding Program to the impoverished children of Barangay Paligsahan Q u e z o n C i t y spearheaded by MLI’s

Vice President, Mr. Jeong Seung Ug with the assistance of Miss Lani Roxas on December 19, 2011. As part of the Junior Sparta Program, all Junior students came to the event. They were the ones who gave food to the children. Mrs. Erin Jeong made the occasion livelier as she taught some songs to the children. She also led the parlor games.

Some fifty children attended the said Feeding Program. They were also given prizes and gifts. Teachers Joseph Lim Navarette, Rhina Reyes, Vivian Ema and Student Manager Seiki also assisted in the said event. Meanwhile, Brgy. Captain

Leo Tiamson of Brgy. Paligsahan expressed his gratitude to MLI for the recently concluded event, “This is the best way to share the Christmas spirit to our community. We thank you,” he related.

His death has had a negative effect on South Korea in aspects of politics, military, economy, diplomacy and so

on. Nevertheless, we don’t have to think about our situation negatively and we

must remember that situation can be the starting point of the unification.

To keep our peace and achieve reunification, South

Korea’s government have to react quickly to rapidly changing situations about North Korea and relieve the tension on the Korea Peninsula through diplomatic efforts. Additionally, South Korea needs to strengthen the national defense against possible aggression and South Koreans have to raise awareness of national security by themselves.

In conclusion, we don’t know how the North Korea will change and we must make tight preparations for many sudden cases. We look forward to hearing détente on the Korea Peninsula and we wish we find peace between South

and North Korea as soon as possible.

weakness in the face of illness and death.

December 17, 2011, he died of myocardial infarction at

the age of 69. North-South relationship has been in

turmoil due to North Korea's nuclear exercises,

Cheonan warship explosion and YeonPyeong Island

attack.

The death of Kim Jong-Il will bring tremendous

changes in Korea. First, even if Kim Jong Il is dead,

the North-South relations will not improve easily.

North Korea is responsible for the attacks on Cheonan

warship and YeonPyeong Island in South Korea. In

addition, North Korea will need a stable settlement of

their new leader, Kim Jong-Eun, Kim Jong-Il’s son.

Therefore, North Korea will worry about its internal

problems and close relationship with China more than

improving the ties with South Korea.

With the death of Kim Jong Il, the tension between

North and South Korea will temporarily ease but

of Being a Man

I used to think that I would like to be born in the same gender again, because I sometimes felt disgusted by jealousy, which happens more often among women. So I felt thankful to God. As I grow older, my thinking has continuously changed, though I know there are still many advantages of being a man. Since I am a man, I don’t need to go through the pain of childbirth, be sensitive every 28 days, make a real friend without jealousy, and so forth. But, despite these advantages, these days, I’m thinking of being born a female. Why did I have a change of heart?

As I was born this way, I have to be responsible to my family. That means my wife and children, as well as my parents. I should take the most part of the burden, generated in each family. It’s more severe in Korea because of Confucian ideas. And I should pay more than women, so we have to earn enough money to buy things my partner wants to get. Also I should know how to fix some gadgets or utilities in the house. So the meaning is I have to be equipped with enough money, in good shape and with a generous personality. That is what Korean society wants.

So, now, I know exactly what this society wants me to do. In other words, I should be like Superman, an all-around player. If so, should I be transformed into such? I guess, it would be better to take a sex-change surgery rather than be Superman. But it will be worse in the future. It’s very hard to be such a man. The standard is too high. But, if I do not want to be a good man, I don’t need to suffer from this problem. It depends on my decision. But the burden on my shoulder is still very heavy for me.

North Korea’s Food Crisis

The primary cause of

North Korea’s food crisis is its socialist

economic system’s contradiction. The

North Korean government is using the

huge budget to deify Kim Il-Seong’s

family and to develop nuclear weapons.

As a result, it gains the mistrust of the

international community because it

distributes relief supplies only to privileged classes. In short, North

Korea's food crisis was inflicted by itself. We must clearly

understand it. Despite a serious food crisis, the government

continues its military buildup.

I believe it is more important to resolve the problem in food crisis

more than the military buildup. I wish that a lot of people would

never suffer from a shortage of food.

F or this issue’s Featured Student, we are showcasing one of the

ROTC students in MLI since majority of them come from this group. To pick one among them was no easy task, so we have considered their time of arrival, performance in class, overall conduct, and general treatment of friends and teachers. As a result, we are bringing you Kim Il Geon also known as Raegeon! Raegeon was born on June 19, 1989 in Kwanju, South Korea. He has a younger sister and a brother who happened to be fraternal twins. He dreams of going to Egypt to see the pyramids, his ideal place. He enjoys mountain camping and gorges on samgyeopsal and pizza. When you first gaze at this young man, you would get the impression that he’s shy, reserved and conservative. But,

these traits are c o m p l e t e l y opposite of what he truly is. When you get to know him a little bit m o r e , h e ’ s someone funny, loves to crack jokes and is very open-minded. He

smiles a lot and he’s really friendly. He loves hanging out with cool people and he’s a very good son to his parents. They inspire him the most, he confessed. Even though his favorite color is red and prefers K-Pop particularly SG Wannabe, he also loves My Heart Will Go on by Celine Dion, but never mistake him for a sissy! He has finished training for ROTC and came out a better man. Just try to imagine the physical and mental exercises he endured for 12 weeks.

"There were three selection tests," Raegeon shares. "The first was a written exam, second was physical fitness and the last was an interview. If you pass all three, the successful candidates will meet then prepare for the army training for 12 weeks.” Yes! He survived the tough ROTC training before coming to the Philippines to study English. His older brother in ROTC was the one who recommended MLI to him. According to his brother, not only can he study English in the Philippines but also visit the beautiful places in the country.

When further asked to describe the training, he shrugged and r e c i t e d t h e activities as if it were just another

story to tell. For him, a man has to go through those things to become a better person. "You wake up at 5:30 AM, make your bed and hear the officer do a roll call. If we aren't complete, we have to make 50 to 100 push-ups. After which we do our morning exercise like running, push-ups and gymnastics. Breakfast is at 7-8 AM. But if one wants to have a personal time to do other things, one must eat faster. Afterwards, we take classes from

8 AM to 5 PM about military c o u r t e s y , weaponry, history of army tactics and shooting skills. From 7 to 10 PM we take dinner, go outside, clean our rooms, do our homework and exercise. We sleep at 10:00." "If you think this

is hard, the final officer training is

even more difficult. All cadets have to walk 40 kilometers of a combination of flat and mountainous grounds while carrying a bag weighing 20 kilograms! We are only entitled to a 10-minute rest every hour,” he continued. According to him, it’s not all the hardship. He said he was glad to have gone all through the tough life he had inside the training school because ROTC offers many opportunities to improve oneself. “There were times when I thought of giving up. I’ve had a lot of mental and physical stress. But I psyched myself up. I can do it! No pain, no gain, right? I was so proud of myself for accomplishing this feat." This young man hopes to graduate from university soon and fulfill his military duties after. He plans to save the money he will get from the training for his future. He also dreams of passing the architecture exam, get his licence and land a very lucrative job. His favorite quotation is "No pain, no gain." He idolizes former Hyundai owner Jeong Joo Young because he used to be poor then reached the top and became rich. Just like him, he believes that when one has determination to succeed, it’s possible! He values patience, perseverance and positive thinking. He claims his parents inspire him the most. Maybe in the future he’ll become as rich as Jeong Joo Young, only stronger and hopefully, a lot wiser. As Raegeon would say, "No pain, no gain!" Way to go,

The Issue of Age: How Child Learners Fair in Second Language Acquisition

I n the last issue, I discussed about the advantages of adult learners in the initial

stages of second language acquisition. We concluded that adults are faster in the early stages because they get more comprehensible input due to the following factors:

• Older acquirers are better at “managing conversations”, or controlling the input directed at them.

• They have the ability to produce structures that have not yet been acquired using first language rules and relying on the Monitor (a conscious internal system that checks the accuracy of one’s language either by intuition or by learned competence).

• Adult learners have greater knowledge of the world; i.e., they have greater amount of background information and experience.

In the long run, however, those who start second languages as children will usually reach higher levels of competence than those who start as adults. But how do they do this? What accounts for children’s ultimate attainment of a second language? To answer this question, I will use the same theory that I used in explaining adult’s performance, Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis.

According to him, affective variables play an important role for effective acquisition. People with the “right” attitude (high

will be more prone to interaction and thus get more input which significantly helps in successful acquisition. He introduced the term Affective Filter which is an impediment to learning caused by negative emotional responses to one's environment.

To explain the child-adult differences in second language attainment, it is important to note that around puberty, the Affective Filter increases dramatically in strength. It is around this time that emotional upheaval, hypersensitivity and self-consciousness take place. It is at this stage when a person feels that he is under constant scrutiny of other people. From this view, one may conclude that a person becomes very conscious of his ability including his acquisition of a second language. While it is true that the ability to acquire does not disappear at puberty, the necessary input is often blocked and is therefore less available for acquisition.

This explains why children lead the race in ultimate attainment. They have less inhibition and are less conscious of their errors or what other people think about them. Let it be clear, however, that the child-adult differences relate attainment to acquisition not to learning. Over the long run, children will acquire more, not learn more. It means that in a natural setting, children will tend to get more from his environment compared to an adult who is very conscious of himself and is likely hesitant in the second language. The increase in filter strength will make most adults not attain a native-like level. This does not mean, however, that the adult beginner cannot attain very high levels of proficiency. It only tries to explain why children have a better chance of appearing to be a native

To sum up the discussion in this article, we therefore conclude that age remains to be one of the determining factors in the successful attainment of a second language. Although adults generally enjoy a greater knowledge of the world in their acquisition of a second language, children are believed to have a greater advantage because they are less affected by affective factors that surround them therefore enhancing their chances for an ultimate attainment of second language.

I wish to reiterate that the assumptions made here are based on Stephen Krashen’s theory which focuses mainly on affective factors in language acquisition. There is more to this topic than may be deemed and factors such as cognitive and neurological may be explored to fully explain the dominance of children

I am making my way out of the Chronicle to take a more

challenging life; I am leaving this column to the students who have the passion for music. And I have chosen Lily to do the very first column.

Here I’ve asked Lily some questions that would reveal her passion for music.

1. What is your favorite K-Pop group in Korea? Define what K-Pop is .

That would be 2AM. 2AM is a South Korean four-member group under JYP Entertainment. The members are Jo Kwon, Jinwoon, Seulong and Changmin. 2AM is one of the two subgroups branched out from the eleven-member boy group One Day, the other being 2AM. They officially debuted on July 11, 2008, performing their debut song,”One Day”.

K-Pop means popular music for the general public in Korea. Especially, K-Pop word is known as Korean music in other countries after Korean music got popular.

In the 1990’s, Korean music market enjoyed a favorable business climate. Even the song, “Wrongful” recorded the volume of its sales at a day that the amount was about two billion, five hundred thousand in the Korean Guinness Book.

From the end of 2000 until now, Idol group has become more popular.

2. Tell a story about this group in terms of:

Genre – 2AM’s genre is R&B ballad. But they challenge a variety of genre. Actually, 2AM’s song, “ I Was Wrong” showed that 2AM has never shown before and is a brand new type of music.

Popularity – 2AM has popularity. One of the reasons is their singing skills. Many people think they have enough emotions and singing skill. They have other talents as well like dancing, acting and so on. Singing talent is just one of them.

Global Recognition – 2AM doesn’t have popularity yet in the world. Nowadays, they are trying to be recognized by people from other countries.

Star Quality – They have a lot of star quality. All of them dance very well. They can even work separately by using their own ability such as acting, hosting and so on.

3. What is your favorite song from this group? Why?

That would be “Even If I Die I Can’t Let You Go”. Because this song makes us feel sad and feel sympathy. Actually, this song was loved by other people. They showed their emotions and singing skill again through this song.

4. What do you like most about this group?

I like their personalities. All of them are friendly and make more fun for us. Especially Jo Kwon, one of the members, is honest. He shows himself

without affectation. Because of that, we can’t expect his behaviour. It is one of the reasons why people like him.

5. How often do you listen to them?

I listen to their music twice a week. Actually I don’t have their song file now. So I just listen to one song.

6. Do they influence your lifestyle?

No, they don’t. Their songs are almost always sad love songs. So they don’t influence my lifestyle yet. I just listen to their music.

7. How will you rate their music style or popularity with 10 being the highest score and 1 being the lowest

What’s Your Blood Type? Does Rh Negative Blood Type Equal Alien

Heritage?

Koreans are very particular to Blood Type or very particular to knowing what someone’s blood type is. Actually it’s one of their favorite questions when you get acquainted with them the first time. They base people’s character to this. They think people act or behave according to blood type. They judge people’s way of dealing with others by their blood type. Be it O, B, AB or A, people from Korea think that their whole being speaks of what kind of blood they have in their body… So in this issue’s Introspect, I’d like to talk about Blood Type, but I am not going to talk about the usual blood type of people. If you are students, and you are reading this column, you know very particularly what blood type is and how it affects one’s character. So now I’m going to inform you of something you may not know regarding this. I am going to discuss about the Rh Negative Blood Type!

What is the Rh Negative Blood Type?

O f the human blood types, O is the most common. It

is a universal blood type. But when blood types are further broken down, they can be grouped, negative and positive. This is called the RH factor. The RH factor is the Rhesus (rhesus as in monkey) blood factor. If your blood tests positive for this, you have the factor in your blood. If you test negative, you do not have the factor in your blood. The RH factor is a protein found in the human blood that is directly linked to the Rhesus Monkey. When blood type is inherited from your parents, it is known that this factor element of the blood is the most consistent human or animal characteristic passed on to the offspring. There are VERY few aberrations. It rarely changes. Are you an Rh Negative blood type? If so you could be a descendant of the ancient astronauts themselves! Most people, about 85%, have RH-positive blood. That could support the idea that humans

evolved or were derived from Primates. 15 % of humans have RH-negative blood. If blood type is one of the least mutable human characteristic, where did the RH negative come from? This question has puzzled scientists for years. There is some evidence that suggests the RH-negative blood group may have appeared about 35,000 years ago. And the appearance was regional and seemed to, originally, be connected with certain group or tribes of people. When humans were first created, they were a product of two genetically similar but not related species.The combination of the DNA of the primates and the gods was produced ‘artificially’ in a lab. If the gods have the technology to create new species, they would have no problem overcoming the problem of the hybrids being sterile.

A little genetic manipulation and it would no longer be an issue. Three proto-types of humans were created. Each one successively more advanced. Two types by design and the last by chance. Neanderthal Man is suspected of being an early humanoid created by the gods but Cro-magnon was definitely a product of their intervention.
