President’s Message Ah! Endless summers….Hopefully, most of us fondly remember the summer days of our youth – playing games, frolicking in the woods and fields, beaches, summer jobs, lightning bugs (for east coasters), and beach volleyball. As summer is now upon us, the SB/V YMF is planning a few seasonal events. First, we are hosting a technical tour of the Toland Road Biosolids Drying and Electric Genera-tion Facility in Fillmore at the end of June. July is the month we will showcase our local wineries and breweries to the membership. On August 14, 2010, we have two events planned. In the morning we will host the bi-annual Southern California YMF Joint Meeting. This will be followed by our first annual Volleyball Tournament, barbeque, and fundraiser. We are excited to be host-ing the Tournament which will feature two volleyball courts on East Beach (Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara), a barbeque in the picnic area, and general beach activities such as surf and sand. We are looking forward to seeing you all there.

President’s Message June 9, 2010 was declared by the Los Angeles City Mayor and City Council as the first official “ASCE Day” for the City of Angels. The day was to honor and express gratitude to all Civil Engineers who have devoted their lives to the advancement and improvement of the wonderful city of Los Angeles. When I first found out about this amazing news, I have to admit that it was surprising. I didn’t know what to think. I sat for a couple minutes in front of my computer trying to absorb the news and thinking to myself, “Is this really true?” As embarrassed as I am to say this, thinking back to my initial reaction made me realize that it is this kind of attitude that civil engineers need to shy away from. Doubting the importance of our contributions and not being able to believe that someone could actually notice our hard work, is definitely the attitude we need to stop. Why did it have to take me a few minutes to realize that this was true, that we can actually be recog-nized and honored by someone other than civil engineers? We play an extremely important and irre-placeable role in our society and it is time to start accepting this and internalizing it. After realizing the news was true, I was overwhelmed with feelings of happiness as well as a proud feeling of accom-plishment. It was then that I truly realized that my ASCE involvement is vital. Ms. Julia Moye, P.E. is the person to thank for this historic moment, thanks to her dedication, belief and perseverance; ASCE members were honored by one of the largest metropolis of our country. I would like to take this oppor-tunity to publicly thank Ms. Moye for her contributions to our YMF group, MLAB and ASCE in general. She is an exceptional leader and we are very proud to have her on our team. Another great leader I would like to acknowledge is Mr. Jeff Girard. Mr. Girard is our Government Af-fairs Committee Chair and has been for the past two years. Words cannot express the dedication and hard work Mr. Girard has put into the committee. His great belief is that civil engineers need to be involved in politics; in the decision making process. What makes him stand out above the rest is how he has turned his belief into reality. From Los Angeles City Hall to Washington DC, Mr. Girard, along with his committee members have been paving the way for engineers to get involved in politics. Meet-ing with legislators, council members, governors, and mayors has been the agenda for the Govern-ment Affairs Committee. Thinking back a few years, what Mr. Girard is now doing was merely a thought back then. If you are interested in seeing our Government Affairs Committee in action, please join us on August 7, 2010 for the second annual Engineers & Politics workshop; “come learn how to take action by advocating for your profession and America's infrastructure”. Ladies and Gentlemen, your fellow ASCE colleagues are making history. This is the beginning of a new era for us as civil engineers. An era where once again the true heroes are being recognized, getting involved and are taking action on issues that have long been forgotten. Become an ASCE member or become an active member and unite with the rest of us to ensure that our profession gets the acknowledgment, respect and prestige that it deserves. This is the second to my last President’s Message, and as sad as this makes me feel, I am also very happy and proud to have served as your 2009-2010 MLAB YMF President. Thank you for making my experience one-of-a-kind and for all of the wonderful memories and accomplishments I will take with me. I hope you can join me in making the next 3 months even more memorable and filled with impres-sions that will last for years to come. Nominations are currently open for our up-coming elections, so please help us continue the legacy our past leaders have given us by joining our 2010-2011 board of directors. Become a leader and help us continue making history. Heren Molina MLAB YMF President

Annual Water Rafting Trip Kernville, CA By: Andrew Pham, P.E. On the weekend of June 26th, members of the LA Section YMFs and their friends gathered in Kernville for camping and rafting along the Kern River. For some of us, including myself, it was our first time camping and rafting. The veteran campers and rafters used their experience to help out the newcom-ers. Not only was it a great experience, it was a fun experience. It was nice to see old friends from different branches, but new friends were made as well. Over 40 people turned out for the event; the group was so big it had to be split up into two river companies for the rafting portion of the trip. The Sierra South group had a great time rafting the rapids without flipping over any boats. However, the Kern River Tours group was not as lucky. Although the water was cold due to snowmelt, the adrena-line experienced while riding the rapids made everyone immune to the cold. During the trip the river flow was measure at 3,000 CFS; everyone had a full day of Level 3 and 4 rafting. I would like to thank Rocio Duran for organizing this wonderful and successful event. We all look for-ward to doing it again next year.

Debris Racks/Barriers Santa Barbara, CA By: Mike Osborn, P.E., Penfield and Smith Civil Engineers and Todd Robinson, P.E., Penfield and Smith Civil Engineers On Thursday, March 18th a group of ASCE Younger Members gathered at the City of Santa Barbara’s public meeting room for a social lunch and slide show presentation of the debris racks that were installed by the City Public Works in response to the large fires that burned the watersheds of Mission Creek and San Roque Creek. YMF President James Winslow dished out the technical details while displaying pictures of the installation and performance of the vari-ous debris racks. The group then gathered in vehicles and headed up the hill for a first hand view of the installations along Tunnel Trail (Mission Creek).

The first rack is located directly above the water reservoir, for obvious reasons. One brave soul managed to climb up close to the rack and give us a report of what he saw—a couple of large boulders and plenty of smaller rocks held back in the racks! It was obvious that the racks had proved effective. The group continued up the trail to the second debris rack. As they walked, James was bom-barded with questions about the systems, locations, costs, etc. The second installation is on the uphill side of the fire road. The debris rack was able to capture two drainage courses with the use of a diversion berm upstream of the rack. This rack was VERY impressive; it made YMF member Todd Robinson nervous to stand below it because of the large amount of material col-lected and retained in the rack. They also inspected the new grated inlet and storm drain in-stalled below the rack. Once again, it was obvious that the rack was doing its job—potentially preventing damage to surrounding infrastructure. Overall the trip was great, the weather was perfect, and the YMF group was able to view the racks “in action” which is something the pictures couldn’t have done justice to.

Younger Member Forum Travels Back to High School Santa Ana, CA By: Karly Ho

Do civil engineers make buildings? What is the differ-ence between architects and civil engineers? What is civil engineering? It’s funny to think that once upon a time, you may have asked those very same questions- questions that sparked your interest and inspired the decisions that have paved the road to where you are now. On the morning of Friday, May 28, 2010, Godinez Fun-damental High School hosted its first annual Science Research and Career Day - An event that brought twenty-three organizations from various science and engineering fields to not only answer students’ ques-tions, but to open their eyes to the many problems that scientists and engineers are demanded to answer every day.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Orange County Younger Member Forum (OC YMF) hosted a booth that displayed various aspects of civil engineering. The exhibit consisted of materials ranging from the steel bridge made by the University of California Irvine’s ASCE student chapter, to plans and posters used for professional projects. These visuals served as an icebreaker to expose students to the multitude of opportunities that civil engineering and ASCE has to offer. The students came with questions that represented varying degrees of knowledge and interests. Questions ranged from, “What is civil engineering?” to “What classes do I need to take to get into a civil engineering program?”, and “What colleges offer a civil engineering major?” Some students even talked about their specific interests such as: the environment, driving, and skate parks, all of which the YMF team could easily relate back to civil engineering. Overall, with roughly 1,600 student attendees, 22 other science research and career related organi-zations, 16 student volunteers and roughly 6 ASCE volunteers, the first annual Science Research and Career Day was a huge success! Honors Biology teacher and event planner, Stephanie Moor-lach wrote to the ASCE YMF team, “The event was inspiring for many of our students… We appreci-ate the strong representation from the American Society of Civil Engineers… The only complaint from the students was that they wanted to stay longer.”

General Meeting at Classic Q Irvine, CA By: Andrew Pham, P.E. On Thursday March 11th, OC YMF hosted a General Meeting at Classic Q in Irvine. It was a perfect time to relax after a long day of work and to catch up with fellow civil engineers. There was a great turnout; over 20 members came out to join us in the festivities. This was the same night OC YMF eye witnessed the elimination of NBA MVP Lebron James from the playoffs.

An icebreaker was conducted to help all the new people interact with the regular meeting attendees, all members were informed about upcoming events, and questions that any members had were answered. The event lasted for 2 fun filled hours, and everyone enjoyed every minute of it. Some of the members even took advantage of the pool tables at Classic Q’s. We’d like to thank everyone that came to this meeting and hope you had a great time. Please re-member that these General Meetings are open to all Civil Engineers and their guests. We hope to see you soon!

CPP Brings the Whooping Bats This Time Rancho Cucamonga, CA By: Hilal Elhaddad

On May 22, 2010, ASCE San Bernardino/Riverside YMF and the Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) ASCE student chapter held their annual softball game at Elena Park in Rancho Cucamonga. This is the fifth consecutive annual softball event that YMF and CPP have been organizing together since 2006. The record over the last four years was 2-2 and both teams were excited about breaking the tie. About 30 people showed up to the game that started with 3 runs lead for the YMF team. But little did the YMF players know, the CPP students were just warming up. Team CPP tied the score in the third inning, later getting out of control and hitting home runs, one after another. The final score at the end of the 9th inning was 24-12, in favor of CPP. Congratulations team CPP and thanks to all those who came out.

After the game, both the students and YMF members got together for a BBQ and mingling. CPP leads the overall records 3-2, but YMF will not give up. Our softball team’s General Manager Albert Martinez will be working very hard during the off season to try to draft/recruit some of the CPP graduating students to play for YMF next year. Good Luck Albert !!!

California State University, Northridge wins 1st place in Display at National Student Steel Bridge Competition 2010 By: Nick Mineo, CSUN Civil Engineering Alumni

Over Memorial Day Weekend there was a competition going on in Indiana besides the Indi-anapolis 500, the 2010 National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC). The competi-tion is an inter-collegiate challenge that requires civil engineering students design, fabricate and construct a steel bridge. The biggest challenge contestants had to face was designing a 21’ x 5’-6” x 3’-6” bridge that complied with all dimension limitations including but not lim-ited to having the bridge disassemble so that each member fit inside a 3’-6” x 6” x 6” box. Entries were judged on how long it took to assemble the bridge, how many persons it took to assemble it, whether the dimensions meet specifications, and performance attributes such as lateral stability, weight, and vertical deflection when subjected to a 2,500 lb load. The results were converted into a monetary value for overall scoring. This collegiate event is hosted every year by a different university and sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction in co-operation with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Approximately 200 universities competed from the 18 ASCE student regions. Of those 200 universities, only 46 qualified for the National Competition.

To qualify for the National Competition, the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) competed at the Pacific South-west Regional Conference held April 8th-

10th at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The months of hard work designing, fabricating, testing, and modifying the bridge paid off for the CSUN Steel Bridge team as they placed 3rd overall and won awards for 1st place in Lightweight, 1st place in Aes-thetics, and 3rd place in Economy. Even though CSUN had built a competitive bridge and achieved their goal of reaching nationals, the team was not satisfied.

In hopes of improving their performance at nationals, the team made a controversial decision to fabricate an entirely new bridge using their original design but with several significant changes. The team came together and worked tirelessly between finals and after the semester ended in order to complete the new bridge in time for nationals. At the national competition CSUN took home the 1st place award for Display and placed 21st overall.

the national competition CSUN took home the 1st place award for Display and placed 21st overall. The 2010 CSUN Steel Bridge Team consisted of Captains Sara Villegas and Julianna Colwell and team members Scott Watterson, Thomas Tan, Jerry Perser, and Nick Mineo. By working together much was overcome and learned from the experience. They were successful because they acted as a true team, worked hard and conducted themselves professionally throughout the design and fabrica-tion of the bridge. At both the regional and national competition they received compliments about their

The judges that worked with them were impressed by their professionalism and their attitude. Based on this, the project was a success before the results ever came in. CSUN is excited to build on this year’s success by making it to the 2011 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Texas A&M University and placing higher overall.
