Adjunct Faculty – Educating the Civil Engineering Students in the field of Traffic and Transportation Engineering.

As an adjunct faculty for SIT I have been educating the civil engineering students on various types of studies that are done in Traffic and Transportation Engineering. The main aim was to give the feel of practical projects which are done on-site. The students were given an exposure to various studies that are carried out before any major infrastructural project is taken up.

Apart from this, various type of studies related to Traffic and Transportation like Traffic impact studies, Road Safety Studies (Urban & Rural), CMP’s, Mobility Indicators, Parking Demand Assessment studies, Area Traffic Management studies, Accessibility towards Bus/ Metro/Railway/BRT Station, etc., were also explained.

Team Leader - Safety Consultancy Services for Development, Construction and Post COD Operation and Maintenance Phase for Pune –Solapur Package-II of NH-9 in the State of Maharashtra, executed as BOT (Toll) on DBFO Pattern.

The object of this study was to conduct the Road safety audit for the entire stretch of 101kms, from Pune to Sholapur apart from 7km of development stage, 25km of Construction stage and 101km of Operation and Maintenance. The important objectives of this project were:

Task 1: Preparation of a Road Safety Strategy and Design Safety Review of 7km stretch in Development Stage Action Plan.

Task 2: Road safety Audit for the 25km of the Construction Stage and Accident Data Collection and Analysis of 101km.

Task 3: Road safety Audit and review for the 101km stretch, during the Operation and Maintenance Phase.

Task 4: Black spot identification and treatment for the entire stretch.

Transport Consultant, Preparation of Detailed Project Report on Installation and Up-gradation of Traffic Signals in Bhubaneswar City”, (Client: Urban Mass Transport Corporation – UMTC) – VOLUME.To overcome the traffic congestion and delays in Bhubaneswar city, Bhubaneswar Development Authority proposed the concept of installation and up-gradation of traffic signals and traffic synchronization in the urban areas along with geometric designs of the junctions. The main object of this study was to assess the traffic flow, delays, congestions, accidents, comfort etc and to provide solutions for the same. ( Year: April 2015- On going)

Team Leader – Preparation of DPR for road widening project along SH-17, Mysore-Bangalore state highway from Gnanabharathi junction to Kengeri town, Bangalore), Bangalore, (Client: Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd- KRDCL)The objective of this study was to prepare the DPR for the existing SH-17 stretch from Gnanabharathi junction to Kengeri town, Bangalore along the proposed phase-II Metro alignment. The main aim of the project was to design the DPR based on the metro piers along the center line of the road, along with the preparation of tender documents and evaluation of tenders. The DPR shall also include the traffic management scheme at the time of construction of phase-II metro alignment.

Team Leader – Elevated Corridors from Cubbon road to Outer Ring Road (ORR), Bangalore, (Client: Bangalore Development Authority-BDA): The objective of this study is to develop conceptual designs of the signal free corridors considering all the traffic and transportation issues relating to road safety and integrating them with the existing junctions and flyovers along with the metro alignment and other infrastructural projects. This includes pre-feasibility stage, Feasibility stage, Traffic surveys, DPR and presentations to the concerned authorities. The projects starts from Cubbon road, it is a unidirectional elevated corridor passing via Kamraj road-Coles road-Mosque road-Tannery road- Nagawara road reaching the outer ring road. It then starts from Pottery road – Mudaliar road-Laser road-St John’s road and finally terminates at Cubbon road. The total length of the corridor is 12 km. The estimated total cost of the

project is Rs 650 Crores.The other activities involve coordinating with various agencies associated in the project (both Government and private agencies). (Year 2011 on-going)

(Client: Bangalore Development Authority-BDA): The objective of this study is to develop conceptual designs of the signal free corridors considering all the traffic and transportation issues related to road safety and integrating them with the existing junctions and flyovers along with the metro alignment and other infrastructural projects. This includes pre-feasibility stage/ Feasibility stage/Traffic surveys/DPR/ presentations to the concerned authorities. The project starts from T.R. Mills – Madiwala junction-Lal Bagh road- Diary circle- Hosur road and terminates at Sarjapur road and Central Silk board. The total length of the corridor is 6.5 KM. The estimated total cost of the project was Rs 550 Crores. It is a bi-directional elevated four lane corridor. The other activities involve coordinating with various agencies associated with the project (both Government and private agencies). (Year 2011 on-going)

(Client: Bangalore Development Authority-BDA): The objective of this study is to develop the conceptual designs of the signal free corridors considering all the traffic and transportation issues relating to road safety and integrating it with the existing junctions and flyovers along with the metro alignment and other infrastructural projects. This includes pre-feasibility stage/ Feasibility stage/Traffic surveys/DPR/ presentations to the concerned authorities. It starts from K.H. road passes across the Bannerghatta road-Hosur road then passing all along the drain through national games village, finally reaching the IRR. The estimated total cost of the project is Rs 405 Crores. The total length of the corridor is 5.5 KM. It’s a bi-directional four lane elevated corridor.The other activities involve, is to co-ordinate with the various agencies associated with the project both Government and private agencies. This includes pre-feasibility stage/ Feasibility stage/Traffic surveys/DPR/ presentations to the concerned authorities. The estimated total cost of the project is Rs 100 Crores. It starts from Rajarajeshwarinagar intersection to Ganabharathi – Bangalore University. It’s a split uni-directional flyover. The total length of the corridor is 1 KM. The other activities involve, is to co-ordinate with the various agencies associated with the project both Government and private agencies. (Year 2011 on-going)

Sri NadaprabhuKempegowda Layout is located at the Western to South Western fringes of Bangalore outside the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation. The proposed Township by BDA is 4043.7 acres, which is termed as the Green Township. The concepts and plans are based on Neighborhood planning, Congestion free township, Sustainable Township. The entire town ship is designed for NMT facilities like cycle tracks, footpaths etc. It has major roads of about 120 kms within the township which is designed for signal free concept with proper integration with NMT’s and site conditions. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 6495 Crores. SWOT analysis is also conducted while designing the Township. (Year 2011 on-going)

Identified the survey locations for the study, to validate the proposal of BBMP conducted a SWOT analysis - Strength Weakness Opportunities Threats.

There had been civil unrest and opposition to the widening as a large; number of trees seemed to be on the chopping block, almost 1,223 trees. Hasiru-Usiru requested DULT for giving them an alternative solution so that trees can be saved. But BBMP officials had to say that there are larger traffic /vehicle Queues observed which is leading to traffic jams, delays, loss of fuel etc.Activities performed:As a Transport Planner was directly involved in providing suitable options by identifying the bottle necks which are causing the traffic delays which are leading for vehicle queuing and traffic chaos. Suggested and designed the junctions in such a way that there will be free flow of through traffic causing lesser jams and making sure the environmental balance is kept intact by saving many trees. Over conducted a SWOT analysis - Strength Weakness Opportunities Threats and submitted the report.

Road MLCP, Bangalore Year: September 2010- February 2011, Location: Bangalore.Position Held / Company: Transport Planner cum Team Leader /DULTSource: Directorate of Urban Land Transport - In house Study Main Project Features: Directorate of Urban Land Transport took up a study of the multi-level parking infrastructure in Garuda Mall, J.C. Road MLCP and Kempegowda Maharaja Complex MLCP with the objective of evaluating their utilization and finding reasons for sub-optimal use, if any. Mere creation of parking infrastructure will not solve the parking woes of a city. There are other important measures like regulation of on-street parking which will determine the effectiveness of any off-street parking facility that is created. The outcomes and conclusions from this study would be helpful in initiating corrective action required to ensure optimum utilization of the existing parking facility and would highlight issues to be kept in mind while designing such facilities in future. Activities performed:As the Team leader conducted the traffic surveys – Junction counts, mid block traffic counts, Registration number plate survey to estimate parking duration and parking demand surveys at MLCPs, parking accumulation surveys in the vicinity of the MLCPs, analysis, future parking demand estimation, methods to cater the parking demand and other traffic issues in the vicinity.Above all, preparation of presentations and report to the Chief Secretary Government of Karnataka.

Year: October 2010 – February 2011, Location: Bangalore.Position Held / Company: Transport Planner /DULTSource: DULT, Sub-committee of BMLTA – Bangalore Traffic and Transportation Initiatives (BTTI) - In house Study Main Project Features: The main objective of this study was to prepare an Urban Street Design Manual for Urban cities. As a part of this Manual four subjects were to be considered Junction Design Guidelines, Road Hierarchy, Pedestrian infrastructure and Utility Management.Activities performed:As the member of this committee was in-charge of coordinating and preparation of junction design guidelines conducted traffic surveys, site reconnaissance survey as case studies were the part of this manual. Apart from the above had to review other subjects covered in the manual and presenting the same to the Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka.

Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Bangalore City Connect Foundation (BCCF) had prepared there proposals which needed to be examined technically.Activities performed:As a Traffic and Transport engineer led the team which involved in Appraisal of Data/Reports, Surveys and Investigations, site reconnaissance, conducting various traffic surveys, traffic analysis, and identification of bottle necks and solutions for the same. A petition was filed at the High court by the Sankey Tank people’s forum to stop the road widening to save the trees. In regard to this ACS, UDD, Government of Karnataka directed DULT to give submit the technical report.Activities performed:As a Transport Planner reviewed the DPR submitted by BBMP and conducted a SWOT analysis - Strength Weakness Opportunities Threats. Submitted the report and presented the same to ACS, UDD Government of Karnataka.

Name of assignment or Project name: Appraisal of Traffic and Transit Management Centers- TTMC.Year: July 2010- September 2010Location: Bangalore.Position Held / Company: Transport Planner cum Team Leader /DULTSource: Directorate of Urban Land Transport - In house Study (Study taken on request of: KUIDFC and BMTC)Main Project Features: The prime reason of carrying out this study was to validate the circulation plans TTMCs along with other traffic and transportation related issues at all the 8 TTMCs (Domlur, ITPL, Yeshwanthpur, Vijayanagar, Bannergetta, Bhanshankari, Jayanagar and Koramangala, developed by BMTC across Bangalore.

Activities performed:As a Transport planner and Team leader led a team of 3 Traffic and Transport planners to conduct mid-block traffic counts, site reconnaissance survey, and data collection on number of bus schedules, land use etc. Based on the analysis, issues at different TTMCs were highlighted and relevant solutions for the same was given. Apart from this circulation plans were also suggested along with the type of studies which need to be considered before taking up the any TTMC project. The same was presented to Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka.

Activities performed: As a Transport planner conducted mid-block traffic counts, site reconnaissance survey, data collection on number of bus schedules etc was collected and analysis was done. Based on the analysis proposals were given to BMTC, KUIDFC and KRDCL on the entry and exit plans. The same was presented to Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka.

This DPR was selected after the traffic study which was carried out in December 2008. Based on the analysis and observation of the traffic study, Transit center comprising of at grade Bus terminal and three to four levels of multilevel parking, these levels will be decided based on the DPR surveys.
