Northwood is a national network. Each office is locally owned and operated by highly trained professionals. Their business credentials, dedication and motivation mean that they understand how quality customer service oriented businesses need to be run.

Quite simply Northwood offer a risk-free rental option by guaranteeing the rent to a landlord even if the property is vacant and even if the tenant does not pay the rent. Added to that, their positive approach and determined attitude puts you on the path to success in all your property requirements.

Northwood also has access to investment properties via their network of developers and business associates. Landlords who are looking to expand their property portfolios should contact Northwood.

Director Nin Rehal commented, “In the current climate we have intentionally held back with the estate agency part of our business, as marketing your property “For Sale” for long periods of time can be damaging and result in you receiving

offers far below your expectations. In these uncertain times some vendors should consider retaining their property as a long-term investment. Our Platinum Scheme has attracted a number of new landlords who have had their properties up for sale for long periods of time. We even offer one-year contracts so you can wait until the market picks up or try again next year. Our guaranteed payment can even tie in with your mortgage payment date.”

If you are thinking of letting and would like to discuss Northwood’s Platinum Guaranteed Rental Income Scheme or any of the complete range of traditional property management services that Northwood offer please contact Northwood on 0121 622 5066, email [email protected] or visit the website www.northwooduk.com andNorthwood would be delighted to arrange a free, no obligation valuation and meet with you to discuss your requirements. What have you got to lose?

Hankering after a lusher greener lawn?It doesn’t have to be as expensive as you think. For a fraction of the cost of buying all the weed-killers and fertilisers yourself, GreenThumb can transform your lawn with their low cost quarterly treatments.

GreenThumb is one of the UK’s largest and most trusted treatment services, with approximately 200 branches serving over 400,000 customers nationally through local operators.

Ed and Tom are your local operators and have been running GreenThumb Birmingham South for just over a year. This branch covers an area that runs from Edgbaston in the north, down to Alvechurch/Rowney Green in the south, and from Weoley Castle in the west to Kings Heath in the east.

The basis of their service is four treatments throughout the year. These are as follows:

• Spring treatment• Early summer treatment• Late summer treatment• Autumn/winter treatment

The first three of these treatments help to improve the lawn by application of a fertiliser and a weed-killer with the final treatment being a liquid moss control and winter feed. From these treatments you can expect to see a thicker, greener lawn with a reduction in the number of weeds and moss present.

In addition to these treatments, GreenThumb also offers hollow-tine aeration and lawn scarification. These processes help to reduce compaction and thatch levels, again resulting in a lusher, greener lawn. Finally, GreenThumb can also offer specialist treatments to control diseases such as

Fusarium, lawn pests including Chafer grubs, Leatherjackets or Frit fly and can also provide water conservers and growth regulators, in addition to providing general lawn-care tips for mowing and watering your lawn.

With GreenThumb’s new easy-to-understand programmes, a beautiful lawn has never been easier to achieve. Why do it yourself? Ed and Tom can help you transform your lawn for minimal price and effort, with treatments starting from as little as £15 (including VAT).

For more information, or for a free, no obligation analysis of your lawn, please contact Ed or Tom on the following:

Fancy a curry? I know just the placeSylhet Spice on York Road in Kings Heath is an old favourite of mine. I’ve eaten there countless times and know just what to expect, so I thought it would be a good idea to review this restaurant afresh with someone who has not eaten there before.

When we arrived we were welcomed like old friends and given a nice cosy booth to sit in. The restaurant was quietly buzzing with other diners and unobtrusive background music.

Sylhet Spice is a relatively small, intimate restaurant which suits me just fine. The décor is simple and stylish with nice smart leather seating and wooden flooring. As first impressions go my friend was impressed by what she saw and we both relaxed into our evening straight away.

Sylhet Spice specialises in Bangladeshi cuisine, and also offers a good range of Indian and Pakistani dishes. The menu caters very well for vegetarians and children and also offers a really impressive selection of fish dishes.

After mulling over the menu for a while, munching on crisp popadoms with delicious home-made relishes and sipping a glass of the house white wine we finally made our selection.

For starters we shared the Paneer Shashlik, a sizzling dish of Indian cheese cubes skewered with capsicum, onion and tomato, and the King Prawn Sagoo, elegantly fanned prawns delicately flavoured with a

squeeze of lemon. We shared both and they were absolutely gorgeous, and stunningly presented. Almost too good looking to eat.

For our main course we shared the Chicken Thawa, a mouth-watering dish very lightly

Page 15: MKH Apr 2011

spiced with a combination of herbs and spices garnished with onions, tomatoes and a generous touch of coriander, and the Telapia Biran, a melt in the mouth fried fillet of traditional Bangladeshi fish, served with lots of garlic, onions, capsicum, coriander, lemon juice and finely chopped spinach. We also shared a light and perfectly made plain naan and a portion of pilau rice.

Suffice to say my friend enjoyed every mouthful and is planning on bringing her family with her next time.

Sylhet Spice can cater for large parties up to 70 people and provides a take-away service.

The proprietor Shafiqul Hoque prides himself on the use of no artificial colours, stock or food additives and all spices are freshly ground in the kitchen. He also ensures that the restaurant gives something back to the community and is heavily involved in local charity fundraising.

So if you haven’t checked it out yet or haven’t been for a while, go and try them out for yourself.

Wheelers Lane School Parking NightmareParents at Wheelers Lane Primary School are campaigning against the dangerous traffic situation outside the school gates.

Without any yellow lines to dissuade them, cars park directly outside the school gates at drop-off and pick-up times, often performing dangerous manoeuvres, such as 3-point turns, directly in the path of children trying to make their way safely out of school.

“A large van nearly hit us last week,” said one worried parent. “It was reversing. I don’t think the driver had any idea we were in his path.”

There have been many near-misses. Parents are urging the council to take action now, before a serious accident occurs.

But a council spokesman said traffic calming measures had been delayed due to objections from residents in the road. He said: “The

council is mindful of the wishes of the school community. As a result, proposals to remodel the entrance of the school on a three-month period are being consulted upon.”

Taken from the school gates 4/3/11 at 3:15pm

Kings Heath Library open againKings Heath Library has re-opened to the public after its three month closure during December, January and February.

The unsafe roof is now held up with scaffolding and a false ceiling has been put in place to support the roof and skylights.

These measures which were funded by the council to the tune of £50,000 will last for five years in which time a further £300,000 needs to be found or raised to fund the permanent repairs to this Grade II listed building.

Sadly, council spending cuts across Birmingham have led to a reduced service from the library which will be closed on Wednesdays until further notice.

If you would like to keep track of progress go to www.birmingham.gov.uk/kingsheathlibrary or you can join the Friends of Kings Heath Library group who meet on a monthly basis, you can find them on facebook at http://tinyurl.com/6efxc18

New play area for Highbury ParkThe construction of a new play area for Highbury Park began in early February and is planned for completion during April.

This is a first for Highbury Park and the style of play area has been carefully chosen to fit in with the natural environment. No shiny painted metal play equipment here! Instead you will find wooden tree-stump stepping stones, a carved stone obelisk with a hole in the middle to crawl through and delightful musical chimes as well as beautiful hand-carved wooden benches for mums and dads to sit while their little ones play.

The play area is designed to appeal to children of all ages as well as adults from a more aesthetic point of view.

The gorgeous new play area is located opposite the walled garden. To find out more go to www.highburyparkfriends.org.uk or take a walk in the park!

A new voice for Birmingham cyclistsBirmingham Bike Foundry has been launched by a group of people from South Birmingham with the aim of bringing the health, environmental and transport benefits of cycling to more people.

The best way to improve cycling conditions in any city is to get more people using their bikes on the roads. Birmingham Bike Foundry hopes to be part of this by encouraging and supporting new riders with affordable bikes and skills.

Find out more at www.birminghambikefoundry.org or email [email protected]

The hope is to bring elements of vibrant bicycle cultures from other major cities like London and Manchester to Birmingham.

Birmingham Bike Foundry takes on donated, unwanted bikes and refurbishes them for resale. This means fewer bikes going to waste and more affordable two-wheelers available to the general public.

If you have any bikes or parts going to waste in the shed, don’t bin them: let Birmingham Bike Foundry give them a new lease of life. This is far more environmentally friendly than being melted down or, even worse, ending up as landfill.

Birmingham Bike Foundry’s also offers training to help create more confident cyclists and bike mechanics.

How to Play

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition!

That’s all there is to it.

You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up.

It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Woods, Wilderness and the Wild Men Middle-earth Weekend 2011 is on 21 and 22 May at Sarehole Mill Recreation Ground from 11.00am until 5.00pm each day.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s love for the countryside and his fond memories of the years spent living near to Sarehole Mill is reflected in the theme for this years weekend which will be highlighting the trees, forests and creatures that inhabit ‘the wild places’ in Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

This event is suitable for children and their families as well as other fans of Tolkien’s stories. It will be enjoyable, in fact, for anyone who appreciates a festival with an ‘old-fashioned’ feel about it. There will be plenty of hands-on activities, crafts and re-enactments, plus music, dance, poetry and drama and of course the ever popular baby dragons together with the Wild Man of the Woods.

This year the organisers are running a photographic competition open to all ages on the theme of Trees and Leaves of Middle-earth. The competition closes at the end of April when twelve prize entries will be chosen to reproduce in a calendar for 2012 and these photographs will be on display at the weekend. The Rules of entry are on the above website.

We welcome those who would like to attend in costume and there will be a costume competition for adults and children during the weekend.

The event includes guided tours of the nearby Moseley Bog which has recently undergone a transformation with new wheelchair and pushchair access pathways.

The weekend is free to attend although there may be a charge for some of the activities.

Details of events and activities can be found on the website www.middleearthweekend.org.uk.
