F R O M Y O U R E X E C U T I V E D I R E C T O R …

The Dorian Gray Syndrome

Just about a month ago, I was in the main sanctuary listening to the Rabbi’s

D’var Torah. It was a Shabbat with a B’nai Mitzvah of twin boys and we read the double parasha of Tazria-Metzora. The Rabbi began his d’var by saying that this double parasha is the worst nightmare for both b’nai mitzvah and Rab-bis.

The subject matter deals with both skin lesions and eruptions, as well as, growths appearing on the walls of houses. As a result, the person or home is excluded from the community while the priest reviews the lesions and decides when the person or home is clean and able to return to the community.

Strange customs belonging to a time when such conditions were believed to cause the person “afflicted” to be marked as “un-clean.”

I made a connection sitting there in my pew on that Shabbat to the story of Dorian Gray. This tale comes to us from the novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” by Oscar Wilde, published in 1890. It is the story of a young, beautiful looking man in Victorian England who gets his wish granted of his portrait aging instead of himself. Over time, he begins to live a hedonistic lifestyle and eventually falls into deceit, shameful behavior, blackmail and fi-nally the murder of his friend. All along he remains both young and handsome while his portrait, hidden in an attic for ages and reveals the awful deeds committed by the young man.

Our ancestors arriving in the Promised Land were concerned with outward bodily lesions or tzaraat, which today can easily be cured with antibiotics and skin creams, but the lesions found on the portrait of Dorian Gray are more insidious and can be termed tzaraat of the soul. I am sure we have read stories about the rich, powerful and the great and mighty who, to all eyes, seem to have it all going for them.

To our surprise and/or disappointment, we read or hear that they been involved in some unscrupulous scheme or have committed a heinous crime. We may be shocked for a time but then quickly chalk it up to human nature. After all, who are we to know what truly goes on in another’s life or even more so in the soul. In the book of Kings I, chapter 8 we are told, “…for You alone know the hearts of all the children of men.”

As we reflect on the lessons of tzaraat, let us focus on all those with souls that are troubled and in need of kindness and sooth-ing help, as well as those with darkened souls, that may be too far damaged as in the case of Dorian Gray. The Bard, William

Shakespeare has Mark Antony say the following after the murder in the Senate of Julius Caesar: “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.’

One of my favorite films is “Everything Is Illuminated,” with Eli-jah Wood as the author Jonathan Safran Foer. It is a story about searching for the truth, for identity and maybe even for some of the characters – redemption. In the closing tableau, Jonathan’s Ukrainian guide, Alex who is chronicling the story writes to Jona-than:

I have reflected many times upon our rigid search. It has shown me... ...that everything is illuminated in the light of the past. It is always along the side of us... ...on the inside, looking out. Like you say, inside out.

The Torah, whether the mundane of Tazria or the heights of Ke-doshim, offers us ample cause for reflection. What we see on the outside may just be the shell hiding the true nature of what lies within. May we be mindful of our neighbors both outside and in.

B’shalom,

Gerry

The MJCBY Legacy Society Team is very proud to announce

that we have reached our Legacy Goals for the 3rd year in a row.

Thank you to our now 42 Legacy Society members that have truly stepped up over

the last three years to make it all a reality.

We would like to welcome our newest member to the MJCBY Legacy Society.

BARBARA KAVADIAS

MJCBY has played a central role in the community life of my family, both before my time and since we

moved here. I first married a man who had grown up at MJCBY; whose social, religious, and communal

life revolved around the Center (as they called it). Fran ran the library and was active in Sisterhood.

Bruce learned to bowl and play basketball here. His father was part of the men’s club and the Board.

His family’s friends were made at the Center. And as we joined the community with our young family,

it became our Center too. Our children went to the Day School (now Gottesman Institute) and had

friends at all the congregations, but they formed their own community with their classmates at MJCBY.

We have celebrated many simchas and sadnesses, at MJCBY. The community here has held me in its

embrace every step of the way, including welcoming my new husband Hanoch. But just as it was

here when I joined, I want it to be here for future families who will join our community. I want to

know that even when I pass away, a part of me will be here, helping to welcome and embrace the

many families who make MJCBY their Center. I thank those who have given in the past, I am grateful

to those whose lives I share today; thank you for letting me be part of MJCBY’s future as well!

LINDA AND LARRY KORNREICH

In 1977, when we visited the MJBCBY for the first time, we immediately felt that it could be our spiritual

home. We fully immersed ourselves in the community, serving on just about every committee that works

for the congregation; attending nearly every social and educational activity; and having the distinct

honor of being the only couple to serve as President of the MJCBY (albeit at different times). So, having

reflected on the past, and while continuing to contribute in the present, we felt that we also wanted to

be a part of the MJCBY’s future. It is for that reason we have committed to the Legacy Project, to insure

that future generations will also have the warm, welcoming reception that we had so many years ago.

Barbara, Linda and Larry encourage others to follow their lead and join

The MJCBY Legacy Society

The Future is Now!

The Benton Family invites the congregation

to celebrate with us as our son, Samuel Eli,

is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June

17, 2017. Sam has worked very hard to reach

this milestone in his life.

Sam is a seventh grade student at the Pingry

School. He enjoys playing basketball,

baseball and golf. Sam also enjoys watching

all sports. He loves to spend time with his

friends and family. He loves to attend sleep

away camp and especially enjoys his time with

camp friends. Sam is smart, funny and caring.

For his Bar Mitzvah project, Sam is raising

money by walking dogs and taking care of

pets. The money he raises will be given to

the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled. This

center helps provide sports equipment and

lessons for children with disabilities. Sam is

excited to help this organization as they look

to buy more equipment this year. In addition,

this project incorporates two of Sam’s favorite

things: sports and dogs.

A big thank you from Sam and his entire

family to his teachers, Cantor Shana and Rabbi

Nesson for all their work in preparing Sam for

this special day.

With love,

Karen, Fred, Max and Hannah Benton

There are still many plots available but our burial area has been predetermined. As a result, the Board of Trustees has taken steps to ensure that we service our Jewish community for as long as possible.

The Board has decided that from now on, only members in good standing of our 3 affiliate congregations will be able to purchase plots. There will be NO plots available for non-members.
