CARVERS CREEK METHODIST CHURCH

Carvers Creek Methodist Church is located on the site of

oldest religious settlement in Bladen County.

This area was settled by James Car¥er in 1740.

In 1743, the Friends (Quakers) asked for a Monthly

Meeting. In 1746, the Monthly Meeting was settled. This

Meeting belonged to the Eastern Quarter. James Carver gave

land to establish a meeting place and a burying ground. The

settlement was called Carver's Creek

In 1749-1952, the following families were represented

there: Carver. Clayton, Benbow, Beals. Ballinger, Channes,

Cox, Kemp, Mayer, Matthews, Sommers, Wright, Clark. Most of

these came from the Fairfax Monthly Meeting in Virginia.

Carvers and Benbows came from Pennsylvania.

This Meeting continued until 1797. We know little of

its history for many of its records are lost. Some went West,

others to Guilford and Randolph Counties, N. C.l

James Carver in his Will dated February 27, 1753 devises

two acres of land "where the meeting house now stands, to our

Society of People called Quakers."2

Edward Jones in his Will dated October 8. 1751 give~ to

Carvers Creek Meeting ten pounds.3

Joseph Humphrey in his Will dated October 14, 1752 gives

three pounds to Carvers Creek Meeting.4

The Quakers of Carver's Creek Monthly Meeting gave their

meeting house to the Methodist who were coming into this

section of North Carolina. The Methodist have a church on the

site of the Quaker meeting house and it is one of the strongest

congregations in the county.5 1

For many years the Methodists worshiped in a small

fr~me building in front of the present church.

It was largely through the genrosity of the late Andrew

Jones and through the sacrificial spirit of the church member-

ship, the present church was built in 1859 by Mr. Alexander

"Sandy" Carter who was recognized as the best carpenter in

this section of the county. The first church service in the

new building was begun by singing that old hymn, "All Hail

the Power of Jesus' Name." Dr. Charles F. Deems, famous

scholar, educator, and clergyman, who at that time was the6presiding elder, preached the sermon.

This church has continued to grow. In 1971 this historic

old church won a Randolph E. DuMont Design Award.7

Today a host of dead sleep in the church cemetery. Many

of them eminent in the history of the Cape Fear section.
