Teaching notes
This is a whole class game in which one team (the red team) has to try to win hexagons in a row across the PowerPoint grid from left to right, while the other team (the black team) goes from top to bottom. In order to progress across the board team members have to give the correct form of a verb. Click once on a PowerPoint hexagon to turn it red and twice to turn it black when a team answers correctly. There are a number of ways to play the game, allowing differentiation by ability, according to the tenses you wish to practise. An additional layer of challenge can be added to any of the games below by getting students to write their answers, for example on mini whiteboards.
Slide 1
Use this slide to practise one tense at a time. Teams take it in turns to choose a hexagon (verb and pronoun) and then have to give the correct form of the tense being practised. Alternatively, you could have two teams of differing ability (lower and higher). The lower ability team could give answers in the present tense whilst the higher ability team answers in the perfect tense (or other more challenging tense).
Slide 2
In this version of the game, each hexagon contains a verb, pronoun and tense prompt, so that different tenses can be practised together.
Slide 3
Use this slide in conjunction with the mixed tense prompt cards on pages 2-3, which need to be cut up in advance with each set in a bag or envelope. Teams take it in turn to choose a hexagon number. The teacher then draws a card at random from the bag. If the team answers correctly, click the hexagon until the correct colour appears for that team. This is similar to the game on slide 2 but includes a wider range of verb prompts. Alternatively, for more variety and challenge, cut up the infinitive prompt cards on pages 4-5, as well as the tense prompt cards and the pronoun prompt cards on page 6. Students pick one card from each set of cards and use whatever infinitive, tense and pronoun they have to give their answer.
