Facial expressions are a universal language of emotion, instantly conveying happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and much more.
This exhibition consists of a series of contemporary portraits capturing people’s emotions, moods and expressions. We express our emotions through our body on a daily basis, at times unwittingly giving away what we are feeling or even giving someone the wrong
impression. My body of work is created in a style, which I have been developing over a number of years, and am intensively focusing on currently. I present a fusion of my more traditional portrait style with an abstract edge, thus creating a more contemporary way of working.
I have always been fascinated with the term ‘Absence of Presence’. The simple concept where we
are able so see something that‘s no longer there, or visualise what used to be.
This refers to our mind’s natural ability to complete the incomplete, to stir our unique creative imagination coupled with memory patterns in order to interpret the image in front of our eyes. I try to capture this concept in my work by using marks and colours as well as leaving out certain features in order to add depth and encourage creativity in the viewer. The abstract nature of my work
encourages a sense of excitement of not knowing what will happen with each stroke, and secret of the final image is to decide what not to include.
As you can see, I really had some fun working on this collection.
