Speed Override Interface 

Installation Instructions 

 

Introduction 

The Mitsubishi Multimedia Control System (MMCS) is provided as standard in NS/NT Pajero Exceed and some VRX models. It provides Bluetooth Mobile Phone connection, DVD, GPS and general radio/CD functionality. Safety precautions built into the system prevent the use of many functions above approx 4 kph. This limitation is not over rideable by way of software configuration and hence the design and development of the MMCS Override Interface. 

This device provides two modes of operation, override and standard. Override mode will alter the vehicle speed signal to the MMCS enabling functionality normally available under 4kph; standard mode will cause the MMCS to operate as normal. 

The interface should be installed by someone experienced in installation of electronic devices. This manual outlines the steps involved in the installation. 

Please note that the manufacturer, supplier or anyone involved with the development/sale of this device accept no responsibility for potential harm caused to existing equipment including the vehicle electronics including MMCS. Use of the device may contravene local laws in your country/state and should be checked prior to installation. 

 

Tools required for installation 

Only basic tools are required, these include either crimpers or soldering iron/solder Phillips screw driver and pliers. 

 

Step 1:   Removal of Dash. 

IMPORTANT – The dash is made of soft plastics and is held in place using a variety of clips and wedges. It is very easy to damage the dash components and great care needs to be given to the removal of parts. 

 

Start with removing the air vents beside the MMSC. These are held in place by expanding wedges with some clips. Prise each off and unplug the hazard light switch Molex plug from the right hand side vent once removed. 

 

Next the air‐conditioning controls need to be removed, these also are clipped. Carefully remove and set below the MMCS – there is no need to remove the wiring plug. 

 

 

Next remove the information system and MMCS surround. Take particular car as the MMCS facia is quite thin and susceptible to cracking. 

 

   

 

Remove the wiring plug by pressing the centre clasp of the plug – it should slide out without any force. Set the surround aside in a safe place. 

 

At this point the MMCS is unscrewed and set forward to gain access to the rear. Place the vehicle gear lever into 1st (closest to the seat) – remove the 4 silver Phillips screws and pull the MMCS forward. Place a towel over the gear lever and centre consol and place the MMCS on it. Be extra careful not to damage the LCD panel of the MMCS. 

 

Step 2: Connecting the Interface: 

 

Installation of the interface requires the cutting of the speed sensor wire into the MMCS. This wire is located in the top 20 pin Molex connector, and is white with a blue stripe 

 

Locate the White/Blue wire and cut this with enough room to make connections at both ends. 

You can either solder the interface, or use the spaghetti connectors provided with the kit. If you solder, make sure you use heat shrink to insulate the wires. 

 

 

 

Begin by connecting the WHITE wire from the Interface to the VEHICLE SIDE of the White/Blue wire. 

Connect the BLUE wire from the interface to the White/Blue wire on the MMCS Side. 

 

 

Step 3: Positioning the Switch. 

 

The momentary switch comes with the Molex plug detached from the 4 pins. DO NOT PUSH THESE THROUGH THE PLUG UNTIL THE SWITCH HAS BEEN FITTED!!!. 

Locate a position suitable for the switch and drill a 16mm hole. A recommended position is by using the switch blank next to the sonar button. It can be quite tricky to fit the switch into the blank, but with some patience you can achieve an excellent result. 

 

Once fitted, the Molex plug pins can be pushed through the blank – Make sure they match up colour wise with the mate plug from the interface. If the wires (Red, Black, White, and Blue) are not in the same order as the interface, damage WILL occur. 

 

Step 4: Power 

The interface is wired to the permanently active supply entering the MMCS. Using the RED wire from the interface, splice onto the wire that is red with a Back stripe entering the MMCS 

If you solder the wires, make sure you use heat shrink or similar to shield properly. 

NB: This wire is active even when the ignition is off – do not short out with the vehicle or damage WILL occur!!!!.. 

 

 

 

The second part of the power connection is the negative (earth) wire. This is the black wire from the interface with the blue loop connection attached.  

Refit the MMCS back into its position with the Interface below it in the area taken up with the air conditioning controls. Run the interface wires behind and down the MMCS. Screw the two top screws of the MMCS into place making sure the alignment pins are through the MMCS chassis. 

Connect the bottom screw with the Blue loop connector as shown: 

 

 

Fit the other screw. 

Step 5: Final 

The interface comes with double side tape attached. Peel this and position on the flat surface inside the dash and below the air conditioning controls opening.  Use the cable tie provided to hold the interface wires out of the way and secure. 

 

 

Installation is now complete and the dash can be re assembled in reverse order to removal. 

Testing: 

Push the switch so the light is off, start the car and go for a drive, whilst maintaining a constant speed above 10kph, select Equaliser settings – the adjustments will be disabled. Press the interface button so it illuminates – the functions will now become enabled. 

 

Information: 

When in override mode the GPS is unable to obtain an accurate vehicle speed as it relies on the vehicle speed sensor input. To return the GPS to normal operation, press the interface button so it is not illuminated (normal operation) – the GPS will shortly recalculate it’s position and resume. 

The interface draws less than 20mA and provides a corrected and regulated signal to the MMCS – it has been manufactured locally using quality components.
