The revolutionaryALPHA family is a newclass of controller thatcloses the gap betweenlow-performanceindividual componentsand compact PLCsystems that are toolarge for someapplications.

The new ALPHA family fromMitsubishi Electric – the worldmarket leader in the compactPLC sector – defines a newclass of performance forautomation applications. Withits outstanding capabilitiesthe ALPHA family is set todominate the class it hascreated, and it will exceedyour expectations in any taskyou set it. It can process up to200 function blocks (ALPHAXL) in a single program, andevery single function (timers, counters, analog signalprocessing, calendar, clocketc.) can be used as manytimes as you need in all yourprograms.

The modern approach:One ALPHA controllerinstead of multiplecomponents. Eachcontroller in the ALPHAfamily can replace anentire group oftraditional components, opening up manyexciting newpossibilities.

The family currentlyincludes the followingmodels:

● ALPHA 6 with 4I/2O

● ALPHA 10 with 6I/4O

● ALPHA 20 with 12I/8O

● ALPHA XL 14 with8I/6O

● ALPHA XL 24 with15I/9O

Other benefits of ALPHAcontrollers:

● Save space and time

● Reduce hardware, programming, wiringand installation costs

In the 24V DC versions youcan configure up to 8 digitalinputs for analog signals(0-10V), with signalprocessing functions foranalog signal shift, anintegrated Schmitt trigger(range controller) and simplecomparisons.

The entire ALPHA instructionset was designed specificallyfor the real needs of theautomation sector. You getboth unparalleledperformance and genuinelyuseful capabilities, withfunctions like simple andcomplex Boolean operations,set/reset, remote control

switches, 8 timer functions(even including thegeneration of signal bursts),incrementing/decrementingcounters, operating hourscounters and more.

This is another highlight ofthe ALPHA family. In additionto a user-friendly PC-basedprogramming environmentyou can also program thecontroller directly, withoutadditional equipment. Thefront-panel control centrefeatures a graphical LCDscreen and eight functionkeys for fast, efficientprogramming.

The advanced newdisplay functions enableyou to view and editfunction block valuesand plain text messagesdirectly on the unit, without additionalequipment.

User support is provided withclear menus in a choice of6 languages (D, GB, F, I, E, S).All information for everyinstruction is displayed indetail on the display and canbe modified by the user.

The ALPHA family has acalendar and clock functionwith automatic summer/winter time switching. Each controller programcan process up to 1,200clock/calendar-activatedon/off switching commands(ALPHA: 350). Memory isnon-volatile with powerfailure data backup powerfor up to 20 days.

A practical controlcentre: An LCD screenand 8 function keys forprogramming andviewing and editingvalues and plain-textmessages.

The ALPHA family isideal for a huge range ofapplications in many fieldsof industry and buildingservices, including:

● Textile industry

● Paper manufacturingand finishing

● Cardboard boxes andpackaging

● Water treatment

● Woodworking andprocessing

● Special-purposemachines

● Greenhouses

● Agricultural machines

● Pump controllers

● Handling systems

There is no competitionin sight, and that appliesuntil well beyond thenext generation. The superlativeperformance of the newALPHA XL minicontroller is simplyunparalleled byinnovative newfunctions:

● PID controllerfunction block withAutotuning function –e. g. flow controlapplications.

● Temperature/voltageconverter for directconnection of PT100and K-typethermocouple idealfor heatingcontrollers.

● Output module with2 analog outputs(0-10V / 4-20mA) –for example as asetpoint source forfrequency inverters.

● DCF77 radio clocksignal interpretation –use as a synchronisedtimestamp.

The domain of the ALPHA XLbegins where the standardALPHA reaches its limits. Withits extended capabilities and in-novative new functions it nowhas an even greater range ofpotential applications, particu-larly in mechanical and appara-tus engineering and buildingservices automation. The topenhancements in the ALPHA XLinclude a tripling of maximumprogram capacity to 200 func-

tion blocks, an extra-large dis-play, expansion capabilities anda second communications port.Fifteen new function blockshave been added to the in-struction set, including arith-metic operations, pulse-widthmodulation and SMS mobilephone text messaging ande-mail functions. These control-lers open up a whole newrange of possibilities, particu-larly for applications calling foranalog signal processing.

Each of the four different baseunits can be expanded withone I/O expansion module fora total of up to 28 I/Os. Fourmodules are currently available:4 digital 24V DC inputs withtwo integrated 1KHz counters;4 digital 240V AC/DC inputs;4 relay outputs; 4 transistoroutputs. An additional modulewith two analog outputs isunder development. Theresolution of the eight baseunit inputs that can also beconfigured as 0-10V analoginputs has been improved to20mV (9 bits).

The ALPHA XL featuresan enhanced displayand even friendlieroperation. The backlightmakes the extra-largeLCD screen easier toread and new displayfunctions like bargraphs, blinking andmoving text enhanceyour applications.A three-level passwordsystem preventsunauthorised access to theeditable process data andother parameters that canbe displayed and modifieddirectly with the eightfunction keys.

The ALPHA XL has a secondcommunications port forcommunication with otherautomation components. In addition to remotemaintenance via modem(including GSM) the systemcan also send SMS textmessages to mobile phones,e-mails to PCs and even faxes(messages, alarms, process

data). And like the ALPHA theALPHA XL can be integratedin an AS-interface network(industrial actuator/sensorinterface bus).

The operating ambienttemperature range has beenextended to -25°C – +55 °C,which means that ALPHAcontrollers also deliverreliable precisionperformance outdoors(e.g. in special-purposevehicles) and even inrefrigeration applications.

Quick and easyprogramming: Theuser-friendlyAL-PCS/WINprogramming softwarehas a very clear andpractical layout:

● Inputs on the left (I)

● Outputs on theright (O)

● Function blocks in themiddle (Function).

The graphical user interface ofthe AL-PCS/WIN packagemakes programming theALPHA series very easy. Onthe left and right you havegraphical representations ofthe inputs and outputs, withthe pre-programmed functionblocks between them (timers, counters, real-time clocks etc). You just use the mouse to”draw” graphical connections(circuits) between the inputs, function blocks and outputsto define the program logic.Using this simple approachyou can create programs withup to 200 function blocks(ALPHA XL), and each functionblock can be reused as many

times as necessary within thesame program. A double-clickon a function block displaysan editing box with itssettings (e.g. on period fortime relays, presets forcounters etc). AL-PCS/WINalso includes integratedfunctions with which youcan generate completedocumentation for yourprogram.

The program simulation andmonitoring functions maketroubleshooting anddebugging much faster, significantly reducingprogramming time andcost overheads.

This feature is particularlyuseful, enabling you to simulateyour program without anALPHA controller connected toyour PC. The AL-PCS/WINsimulation module displays arealistic representation of thecontroller program. You canactivate inputs by clicking withthe mouse and the statuses ofthe function blocks andprogram execution aredisplayed graphically on yourscreen.

All the controllers in theALPHA family can beprogrammed with thepowerfulWindows-basedAL-PCS/WIN package. This program is veryeasy to use and requiresno special skills on theuser’s part. Theprogramming softwarecan be installed in sixdifferent languages(D/GB/F/I/E/S) with acomplete online helpsystem in eachlanguage.

The library foruser-defined functionblocks providesadditional flexibility.Your user-definedfunction blocks aredisplayed in their ownwindows, which helps tomake complexprogramscomprehensible and

The AL-PCS/WIN ”Monitor”function enables you toconnect an ALPHA controllerto your computer andmonitor actual programexecution on your computerscreen. In this mode thecurrent statuses of the I/Osand function blocks aredisplayed on the screenduring program execution.

AL-PCS/WIN also comes with asimple process visualisationsystem called ”SystemSketch”. It is displayed in aseparate window into whichyou can copy and configuregraphical elements andelements from your program(inputs, outputs, functionblocks etc) or from anotherWindows application. Onceyou have set up the System

Sketch window you can use itto perform a graphicalsimulation and monitoring ofyour program without usingthe programming interface.

Among other things this canmake setting up, installingand maintaining yourapplication much simpler.

Graphical applicationvisualisation andsimulation couldn’t beeasier. You just copyapplication images to aseparate window thenadd program elements.

A double-click on one ofthe pre-programmedfunction blocks displaysa dialog in which youcan edit its settings andparameters.
