Two Channels Bolted Back to Back with Spacers. When a cavity wall needs to be supported above an opening, two PFC’s can be bolted together back to back, with a spacer in-between, in order to give strength to the walls. The gap between the sections matches the width of the cavity, and the spacing between the bolts is typically 600 mm centre to centre

STANDARD HOLE DRILLING

When projects are struggling for height, for instance in basements

and lofts; it is often preferable to replace a deep beam with two

smaller beams. However, to ensure stability and resistance to

buckling, these beams need to be bolted together, and this is

where a spacer is used. The bolts are typically 600 mm apart from

each other.

SPLICED BEAMS

ILLING

Splices are required when a beam is either too long or too heavy to

install safely. When a beam spans two party walls, a splice is also

recommended to easily install the beam. As a rule of thumb, the

flange plates need to be at least the same thickness as the beam’s

flange, and the same rule applies to the web plates.

limited, an end plate Splice may be required.

Flat Plate can be welded or bolted to Universal Beams (UB),

Universal columns (UC) and Parallel Flange Channels (PFC) The

plate is added to the Beam to support brickwork or timber joists.

The plate is often offset to one side so the brickwork is sufficiently

supported. A top plate can be added to a beam when the size

of the required beam is smaller than the wall it is carrying.

CRANKED BEAMS

ILLING

Cranked beams are most frequently used to support roof structures;

therefore the angle of the middle member needs to follow the pitch

of the roof. Full penetration welds are used with these connections to

ensure the crank will carry the load. Cranked beams are also

commonly used to support staircases.

BOX FRAME / PICTURE FRAME

ILLING

A Box Frame of Picture Frame comprises of four universal

beams (UB's), universal columns (UC's), box section or any

combination of the three, joined together with welded plate

and bolted connections. Wall fixing restraints can be added to

the posts if specified. All structural connections come complete

with Grade 8.8 bolts.

GOAL POST FRAME

ILLING

A ‘goalpost’ comprises two columns and a top beam, creating

a goal shaped structure. Three universal beams (UB's), universal

columns (UC's), box section or any combination of the three,

joined together with welded plate and bolted connections.

Wall fixing restraints can be added to the posts if specified. All

structural connections (steel to steel) come complete with

Grade 8.8 bolts.

Universal Beams are sometimes described as an ‘I’ shaped beam or an ‘H’ shaped beam. Universal Beams are always higher than their width. The 1st dimension is the height of the beam, the 2nd dimensions is the width of the beam and the 3rd dimension is the weight in kilograms per metre. We stock all the popular sizes in Self-Colour as well as Primer-painted. All sizes can be cut to Length and a Painting, Drilling and Galvanizing service is also available.

ILLING

Universal Columns are sometimes described as ‘I’ shaped beam or as an ‘H’ shaped beam. Unlike a universal beam, the UC’s width is roughly equal to their depth. Universal columns are mainly used for columns, however their small depth compared to universal beams make them ideal load bearing members when height is limited (which is quite often the case in residential projects). We stock all the popular sizes in Self-Colour as well as Primer-painted. All sizes can be cut to Length and a Painting, Drilling and Galvanizing service is also available.

ILLING

Parallel flange channel is sometimes referred to as “C-section”. The PFC is used for columns, lintels above doors or simply a beam supporting floor joists. When used for lintels, they have a bottom plate welded to it that takes the outer bricks or 2 channels are bolted back to back with spacers to support both leafs of a cavity wall. We stock all the popular sizes in Self-Colour as well as Primer-painted. All sizes can be cut to Length and a Painting, Drilling and Galvanizing service is also available.

Rolled steel angle - equal is also referred to as: “angle”, “equal angle” or “L-shape” as well as Unequal Angle. For structural steel purposes, equal angles are most often used for brackets for cleat connections. We stock all the popular sizes in Self-Colour as well as Primer-painted. All sizes can be cut to Length and a Painting, Drilling and Galvanizing service is also available.

ILLING

Mild Steel Flat Plate is used for base plates, end plates, stiffeners, gussets, tabs, splice plates and many more. In some cases they add strength to a beam when welded along the length of a beam. We have a wide range Mild Steel Flat Plate in stock that can be cut to your own specific requirement .

ILLING

We have a wide range of Square Hollow Section SHS and Rectangular Hollow Section RHS in stock that can be cut to your own specific requirement.

A rebar (short for reinforcing bar), also known as reinforcing steel, reinforcement steel, rerod, a deformed bar, reo, or reo bar, is a common bar, and is commonly used as a tensioning device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures holding the concrete in compression. Rebar is given ridges for better mechanical anchoring into the concrete
