CONSIS1'ENCY & VARIETYWhen I first started training, I
found articles like this [using va-riety in training] to be thoughtprovoking but ultimately notthat useful. How was I, so new totraining, to know when to beconsistent and when to thinkabout variety? Telling me to bal-ance them helps a little, but stillisn't very concrete. Now what Iwould say is that consistency andvariety are mostly practiced ondifferent dimensions of training. The need to be consistent appliesto both your cues to your animal, and your expectations of how hewill respond to your cues. Nei-ther the cues nor your expecta-tions should ever change. If onetime you say "down" and yourdog lays all the way down andyou reward him, and the nexttime you say it and your dog goesmostly down but leaves one el-bow an inch off the floor and you ,reward that too, your dog willhave a hard time figuring outwhat you really want. If one el-bow can be left an inch up, thenwhat about the other elbow? Is it"good enough" if both elbows arewithin an inch of the floor? Or,how about if one elbow is downand one elbow is two inches up?Is that good enough? This iswhat Clinton means I when hesays "Consistency is yopr greatestally and inconsistency is yourgreatest enemy." The more con-sistent you are in your expecta-tions, the easier it will be for
your dog to figure out what therequirements are, and the lessvariation you will get in his re-sponses. You won't start downslippery slopes that ultimatelylead to something that is defi-nitely NOT "good enough". Like-wise, if one time you say "down"and another time you say "liedown", and another time you say"DOOOOOWN!" it will be lessclear to your dog exactly whatyour cue is.
Where variety comes in is inthe context in which you use andpractice the skills. If your dogcan down in the kitchen, can hedo it in the living room? Can hedo it at class? Can he do it on atable? Can he do it in wet grass? Can he do it when the neighboris grilling hot dogs? Can he do itfrom a sit? Can he do it from astand? The more different situa-tions in which you practice thedown, the better off you are. Butremain absolutely consistent inyour requirements of how adown is performed.
When it comes to cues andexecution, think consistency. When it comes to environmentand situation, think variety.

UKC OBEDIENCE, RALLY,& AGIILTY TRIAL THANK YOUSMany, many thanks to Sarah
Schroeder for stepping in &judging when one of the Obedi-ence/Rally judges for the UKCtrial had to cancel at the lastminute due to a family emer-gency. She did an admirablejob stepping in & doing that jobwhile being Trial Secretary.(And thanks to Corinne Shankswho assumed "some" ofSarah's duties as Trial Secre-tary during the trial, THANKS!SARAH!
Many club members earnedlegs & titles! Some got HC &HIT (even though Gail Brownwalked off with all the Obedi-ence HITs with her Terv!) Isaw many excited & happyfaces leaving the trial. Thanksto ALL OF YOU who made thishappen. It takes a village/club!
Dianne Strickland
I have so many people tothank for helping make theUKC Agility trial a success I'mafraid I will forget someone, but here goes: Hank Zelenka &Diane Kowalczyk, you handledthe equipment like the profes-sionals you are; Larry Hun-zeker, you hauled the equip-ment for us, loaded, unloaded, loaded & unloaded again, withthe help of several others in-cluding Christie & John Kucsikand Tom & Sandy Wat-son; Irene Bessette, you tookcharge of the food & with yourhelper, Susie Baker, you pro-vided us with wonderful snacksand meals; Ladina Vanzandt, with all you have had going onin your life, you found time toline up all the volunteers-amazing; Stacy Bober, you aremy hero for the "trial byfire." You were awesome, &
Sarah Schroeder, I can hon-estly say I couldn't have doneit without you.
If I have forgotten someone,I'm sorry since the weekend isstill a blur, but thank you fromthe bottom of my heart.
Looking forward to next year.
Becky FrakesUKCAgility Trial Chair
First off, I think we should allthank Sarah Schroeder. TheUKC Trial wouldn't have beenpossible without her. Althoughmy name was down as the"Trial Chair" for the Obedience& Rally trials, she was thereal Trial Chair behind thescenes! She made everythinglook super easy, kept a smileon her face, & everything ransooooooo smooth! As Diannestated, Sarah was originallythe Trial Secretary for Obedi-ence & Rally, but at the lastminute one of our judges hadto cancel. Sarah jumped rightin to judge & quickly got Cor-rine Shanks to be the TrialSecretary. Thank you Corrinefor jumping in!
Becky Frakes - my partner incrime! She worked 500000000hard to make sure the Agilityside ran smooth. She did eve-rything from helping out withthe paperwork, to settingcourses, to being a ring stew-ard! Thank you!
Stacy Bober was the TrialSecretary for the Agilityside. We threw her to thewolves that first day & the sec-ond day, she came back SMIL-ING! And she brought her hus-band & daughter to help outtoo! Thank you!
Irene Bessette kept us fed & Isaw Susie Baker over there
helping too. Thank you!I'm not sure who all hauled the
equipment, but I know Larry &Michelle Hunzeker & Jack Frakeswere part of it. Thank you:
Special thanks go out to theStewards who volunteered tohelp out too! They are as fol-lows: Brenda Morehouse, LindaEccher, Karen Dwerkotte, JeanCobban, Sharon Gentry, BobGentry, Jenica Belsha (and Car-ley!), Janice Johnson, ShawnAdams, Eunice Williams, TisheDeppe, Eric Scott, Renee Wilson,Sabre Turner, George Long (and"Uncle Tim"), Anne Baker, TylerBober, Tom Hawkins, CathyHawkins, & Hailey Vanzandt.
I'm not sure who all helped toset up & tear down, but I'm surethere are more "thank you's"that need to go out. I knowHank, Diane, Christie K, theHunzekers, Lorri, & lots of oth-ers helped out with setting upthe agility courses, heightchanges, etc. Thank you!
It doesn't matter if you're abrand new club member, a vet-eran club member, if you runagility, do tracking, do rally, obedience, nose work, or justlove your dog. It takes eachone of us to make a difference &to pull off a big job like atrial. We had three differentvenues ALL under one roof. Wehad a few obstacles to over-come, but we did it! Lots of clubmembers & exhibitors got newtitles & we all had a good time.
Also - thank you SMDTCmem-bers for continuing to supportour UKCefforts!

"The UKC trial was a blast & Icouldn't have been prouder ofmy boys. Those of you whohave done agility for quite sometime may remember Bentleystressing in the ring & evenleaving the ring multiple times inthe past. I am happy to reportBentley did none of that thisweekend. We had some reallynice runs together & even whenwe made mistakes we had agood time. We are making greatstrides in our teamwork. Bentley
Q'd 5 of his 8 runs with three 1stplace perfect runs, a 2nd place& one 3rd place earninq 34points toward his U-ACH"Grimm, what can I say about
this pup, one word AMAZING! Ientered him with the hopes wewould just be able to completethe courses & have a littlefun. Little did I know that Grimmat 14 months old was going tohit the ball right out of the park.Grimm Q'd 4 out of his 4 runs.He earned his AG-I title in threeconsecutive runs with three per-fect scores & three 1st place-ments. I am still shaking myhead in disbelief & re-watchingthe video of his first agility run.You can bet I will never forgetthis agility trial!!
