WHYTHE

Y?Everyone you meet at the Missoula Family YMCA has a story about how they arrived. Under the overarching mission of building mind, body, and spirit, you’ll find a boy or girl learning how to stay active and healthy in the youth sports program. In a fitness class, you might meet a woman who never imagined that exercise could be so much fun. With a personal trainer, could be someone you know who is regaining strength after an injury or surgery. Maybe a diagnosis of arthritis is what prompted a new friend to safely strengthen and tone his body. Perhaps it’s a bucket-list challenge to tackle a climbing wall or the need to certify as a lifeguard behind a member’s introduction to the Y.

Take a look through the winter schedule. What fits with your story? You can start a new chapter, just by giving it a try. Really, Y not?

Fun for my whole family.

Grandma too!

I love the team sports and

swimming!The Y makes me feel

great & I can hang out with friends!

When you become a member at the Y, you are part of a community where your children are cared for, where you can have fun and become healthier, and where social responsibility is a guiding principle. The Y becomes your Y!

28 FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT | FOR HEALTHY LIVING | FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

I am a graduate of Brigham Young University’s Marketing and Advertising program and a veteran executive leader in the Montana non-profit sector. I come to the Missoula Family YMCA having served as the CEO of Action for Eastern Montana for the past nine years. In this capacity I oversaw a multi-million dollar non-profit

that provided a variety of federal and state programs in Eastern Montana with primary focuses on housing development, Head Start, education and career planning, household energy efficiency measures and programs to promote independence for elderly and disabled individuals. My key areas of expertise are focused on financial analysis, program compliance and strategic planning. Prior to overseeing Action for Eastern Montana as its CEO I worked as the Director of their Marketing and Planning Department.

As a fifth-generation Montanan I have a long-term love of Montana and those that are blessed to call it home. I love working with individuals, families and organizations in an effort to shape the communities that we live in not only for our enjoyment, but for the benefit of our posterity. As a professional, and individual, I believe in being involved and actively working to be an agent of change. To this extent I have been involved in a multitude of organizations such

as the Boy Scouts of America, Dawson County School District’s Board of Trustees, Grandview Retirement Home’s Board, and Energy Share of Montana’s Board.

My great grandparents were some of the first homesteaders in Dawson County and I was raised on a cattle ranch and farm where you learned to appreciate the hard work and legacy of those that went before you. But most importantly, you learned that your hard work was vital in terms of shaping your own legacy and developing a future for those who would walk in your footsteps. Today, more than ever, I see the importance of these lessons as I raise my own five children. I feel a great honor to come to the YMCA of Missoula and stand on the shoulders of outstanding individuals who helped it become the tremendous organization that it is today. I also feel imbued with a terrific sense of responsibility to help it grow and continue to be viewed as not only an important part of the greater Missoula community, but most importantly as a valuable part of the lives of the individuals and families that feel a sense of ownership in its programs and services.

My family loves the outdoors and we’ve regularly enjoyed adventures in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley. We hope to see you at the YMCA, out on the town, on the slopes or down a trail.

MISSOULA FAMILY YMCA | 3000 S. Russell St. | 721-YMCA (9622) | www.ymcamissoula.org 29

You know the challenges that we face in Missoula. People of all ages and backgrounds are struggling to reach their full potential. More and more children face seemingly insurmountable learning gaps. Families find it difficult to spend quality time together. People are not connected to their neighbors and face time happens through a phone. And instead of seeing the income gap shrink, it seems all we do is watch it grow.

But when challenges arise, the Y—and donors like you step in. After 45 years of serving Missoula the Y understands what our community needs to be its best. Working with generous donors like you, the Y provides everyone the opportunity to be healthy and thrive, to connect with others, and contribute to a better community. Everything the Y does is in service of making us —as individuals and a community—better.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

KIDS WHO ARE DISADVANTAGED GET TO EXPERIENCE THE Y.From summer camps to soccer leagues, to childcare to music, the Y offers hundreds of ways for a child to have fun, meet friends, learn, be challenged and grow. Many kids here in our community would otherwise never get that chance. Through the Annual Campaign, they do.

FAMILIES ARE EMPOWERED BY ACCESS TO Y ACTIVITIES.What’s the first thing a working parent thinks about every morning? Childcare. How does a struggling family pay the bills? By cutting activities for their kids. The Annual Campaign makes childcare, preschool and various programs accessible to families, no matter what their income may be.

YOUR COMMUNITY IS STRENGTHENED BY Y PRINCIPLES.The Y teaches values, skills and developmental assets that influence the choices young people make during crucial adolescent years.
