Mississippi State begins its 41st season of women's basketball competition Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs have won their last eight exhibition games. The last setback came in 2005-06 when MSU fell to the Houston Jaguars and Athletes In Action. Mississippi State and Arkansas-Fort Smith are meeting for the second time, with the Bulldogs taking an 84-48 exhibition win to open the 2011-12 season. MSU associate head coach Johnnie Harris coached under Arkansas-Fort Smith coach Louis Whorton for two seasons, helping the then-NJCAA Lady Lions to a 34-8 record and an NJCAA Final Four appearance. Mississippi State returns nearly 90 percent of its offense from last season's squad that won 22 games, fourth- most in school history, and advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals. The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth in the preseason by league coaches and media. Martha Alwal was tabbed first-team All-SEC by both. State welcomes a heralded Top 20 rookie class to the roster: Kayla Nevitt, LaKaris Salter, Blair Schaefer, Victoria Vivians and Morgan William.

GETTING TO THE BASICS ► Mississippi State gets its final preparation for the 2014-15 sea-son Sunday afternoon when it hosts Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 2 p.m. exhibition contest.

► Mississippi State, which enters its third year under head coach Vic Schaefer, is coming off a 22-14 season that ended with a trip to the WNIT quarterfinals.

► NCAA Division II member Arkansas-Fort Smith returns three starters from last year's team that went 9-17. UAFS opened with an 81-52 win against Evangel Oct. 29. Newcomer Jasmine Brainard led the way with 20 points.

DAWGS VS. LADY LIONS► Sunday's contest will be the second time Arkansas-Fort Smith and Mississippi State have met in exhibition play.

► Seniors Martha Alwal, Kendra Grant and Jerica James are opening their final season against the same UAFS team they met to begin their careers. MSU started the 2011-12 campaign with an 84-48 win against UAFS.

► Grant had nine points in that contest, while James added two. Alwal tallied 11 boards. MSU was paced by 24 points from Diam-ber Johnson and 20 from Porsha Porter.

UAFS CONNECTION► Associate head coach Johnnie Harris coached alongside Lou-is Whorton at Arkansas-Fort Smith for two seasons (2001-02 & 2002-03). Harris helped UAFS (then a two-year college) to a 34-8 overall record during that time.

► Harris helped the Lady Lions to a 26-2 record and a share of the Bi-State Conference championship her final season. She also inked the nation's No. 1 recruiting class that took UAFS to the NJCAA Final Four in 2004.

BULLDOGS BRING BACK EXPERIENCE► The Bulldogs return nearly 90% of their offensive production, including their Top 5 scorers from a year ago. State also has 84% of its rebounding back from that 22-win squad.

► MSU returns 63.5 ppg, second-most in the SEC behind South Carolina's 70.7 ppg. State has 36.9 rpg back, fourth-most in the league behind Florida (51.8), Tennessee (42.9) and South Caro-lina (39.0).

► State returns senior Martha Alwal, who led the Bulldogs with 14.9 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Alwal, a first-team All-SEC selection and the league's co-Defensive Player of the Year a year ago, topped the SEC with a 2.7 blocks average. Second-leading scorer Ken-dra Grant averaged 11.4 ppg, but she ended last season on a hot streak, ripping the nets at a 13.8 clip in the WNIT.

► SEC All-Freshman Team selection Breanna Richardson (9.5 ppg), fellow sophomore Dominique Dillingham (8.8 ppg) and se-nior Savannah Carter (7.3 ppg, 2.2 spg) all started 20-plus games a year ago. MSU also returns reserves Jerica James (5.2 ppg, 2.8 apg), Ketara Chapel (4.2 ppg) and Sherise Williams (3.2 ppg).

HERALDED ROOKIES READY TO SHINE► MSU has six new faces on the court this year with a heralded Top 20 signing class and sophomore Chinwe Okorie. Okorie will see her first action after having to sit out the 2013-14 season.

► State's rookie class includes Parade All-American Victoria Viv-ians, Mississippi all-state selection Blair Schaefer, Alabama all-state and Birmingham News Player of the Year Morgan William, Florida all-state standout LaKaris Salter and Texas all-state guard Kayla Nevitt.

SCHAEFER BUILDING A SOLID PROGRAM► Head coach Vic Schaefer added another major building block toward building a champion program in Starkville last season. He became the only MSU coach to reach 20 wins and the postseason in year two, and he joined Peggy Collins (16-14 in 1978-79) as the only Bulldog coaches to post a winning record in the second season. Schaefer's 35 victories are the most by a Bulldog coach in the first two seasons.

► The nine-win improvement from year one to year two was second among the SEC coaches at their current schools. Andy Landers' second Georgia squad (1980-81) won 27 games a year after winning 16.

► Last year's WNIT berth was the 15th time in the last 17 seasons that Schaefer has taken a team to the postseason.

BULLDOGS ABROAD► This year's squad got an early start to the year with a European tour that included visits to Belgium and France. Mississippi State started the eventful trip in Ghent, Belgium, before ending the tour with stops in Paris, Lyon and Nice in France. On the court MSU posted a perfect 4-0 mark and averaged 106.3 ppg while holding opponents to a 45.8 average. Breanna Richardson and Victoria Vivians averaged 15.3 points each to lead the squad. Chinwe Okorie topped the team on the boards, averaging 9.3 per contest to go with 9.0 points.

LOOKING AHEAD► Following Sunday's exhibition, Mississippi State begins the regular season where it left off last year, in the WNIT. The Bulldogs open the slate in the Preseason WNIT, hosting Mercer Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. The contest will be the second half of a doubleheader with the Bulldog men's squad.

MSU PICKED 8TH; ALWAL EARNS ALL-SEC HONORS► League coaches and media members both predicted Mississippi State to finish eighth in the SEC this season. The Dawgs were rated just behind LSU and ahead of Florida, Auburn, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama and Ole Miss.

► Senior Martha Alwal was tabbed by both as a first-team preseason All-SEC pick.
