19 On the evening of that first day of the

week, when the disciples were together, with

the doors locked for fear of the Jewish

leaders, Jesus came and stood among themand said, “Peace be with you!”

20 After he said this, he showed them his

hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed

when they saw the Lord.



21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As

the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

22 And with that he breathed on them and

said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

In 1934, German missiologist, Karl

Hartenstein, first coined the Latin term

missio Dei, meaning “the sending or the

mission of God,” which refers to theunderstanding that Mission is centred in the

very nature of God and begins with his

initiative alone. (“Missio Dei” Wikipedia)

We have come to see that mission is notmerely an activity of the church. Rather,mission is the result of God’s initiative,rooted in God’s purposes to restore and healcreation. “Mission” means “sending,” and itis the central biblical theme describing the

purpose of God’s action in human history.God’s mission began with the call of Israel toreceive God’s blessings in order to be ablessing to the nations.



God’s mission unfolded in the history of

God’s people across the centuries recordedin Scripture, and it reached its revelatoryclimax in the incarnation of salvation inJesus ministering, crucified, and resurrected.

God’s mission continued then in the sendingof the Spirit to call forth and empower thechurch as the witness to God’s good news inJesus Christ. It continues today in theworldwide witness of churches in every

culture to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and itmoves toward the promised consummation of God’s salvation in the eschaton (“last” or“final day”).



We have learned to speak of God as a

“missionary God.” Thus we have learned to

understand the church as a “sent people.”

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you”(John 20:21).
