Message from the Board

Dear YTCA Members By the time that this reaches you, the holidays will be over and the hectic pace is no longer. We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. Have you noticed in recent months the increased use of dogs for advertising on T.V.? Range Rover had such a cute terrier riding in a car with the windows open, he was actually smiling as the wind blew in his face. Another ad for a car showed a family in an Volvo SUV parked on a highway in a rural area. Suddenly a dog runs out from the wheat fields and jumps into the SUV. The family greets him and they drive off happily. I fail to understand the message with that commercial. Today Comcast used a beautiful Husky in their commercial. Again the message was not clear, but maybe it does not matter, just as long as the dog gets the attention of the viewer. Conversely, it is sickening to see the videos on Face Book showing the horrible acts of animal cruelty. However recently a Bill was approved which makes anyone who maliciously harms an animal will be charged with a Federal felony. PACT (Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act) was approved in all 50 states. It is a Federal crime with fines and up to seven years in prison. Rep. Ted Deutch and Vern Buchanan from Florida introduced this legislation which was passed unanimously. Our annual Specialty Show in New York will be on February 9th 2020. Hopefully you have made your hotel reservations by now at the New Yorker Hotel. If you are coming, please bring some Yorkie memorabilia for us to use for the silent auction. Or, if you cannot come, please send your items to Cheryl Rangel at the New Yorker Hotel. We most sincerely appreciate your support. We hope to see you in New York…..let’s make it the best ever! We wish you and your family a Happy and Healthy New Year! Your Board of Directors 2019 – 2020 Leslie M. Stolfi, President Robbe Lyon, Vice President Matina E. Johnson, Secretary Melissa Jones, Treasurer Directors: Teresa Cuchiaro Ken Lambert Pamela Langstein Georgina Miller Helen Scott

Page 8: Mission Statement - Yorkshire Terrier · ^To preserve and protect the Yorkshire Terrier breed, as recognized by the AKC. To provide education and encourage the breeding of true type,

As a reminder, the All Toy Agility trials will be held at the Hyatt Regency Greenville on Saturday and Sunday and the Yorkie Only Agility National will be held there on Monday, along with the YTCA combined dinner and auction on that Thursday or Friday. All Conformation and Obedience events will be held at the Greenville Convention Center in conjunction with the All-Breed Foothills cluster. NEW YORK 2020: Director Pamela A. Langstein reported that the planning book is posted, hotel information is on the YTCA website and she is working on the Premium List. NOMINATING COMMITTEE: President Leslie Stolfi reported the Nominating Committee appointments are coming along, but not concluded. The Board will make an announcement regarding the Nominating Committee Chair and members prior to November 1st as per our ByLaws. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: PERFORMANCE AWARDS: Secretary Johnson reported that both the Board and C/P Committee have now had a chance to peruse the consolidation of the C/P Awards onto one application. No changes are being made to the awards, only an adjustment in format. A final version should be available on the website in the coming weeks and will include the YTCA Triple Crown Award which previously did not have a web application link. NEW BUSINESS: RECOGNITION OF MEMBERS: President Leslie Stolfi recommended that perhaps the E Express team could come up with a few questions for Board approval that could be sent to new members to serve as a short introduction for them in the E Express, as well as a questionnaire for “retired-from-showing” members to highlight their accomplishments and contributions to our fancy. ANNOUNCENMENT LIST: Director Teresa Cuchiaro suggested that the Board investigate switching from Yahoo groups to Google groups since Google groups do not require the receiver to accept the request for list addition on the other end. The Board will look into this in the coming month to determine if this might be a good and cost effective way to improve club communications. The next meeting of the Board will be Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. EST. This concluded the business of the meeting. Director Ken Lambert made a motion to adjourn. Director Georgina Miller seconded the motion. Voting Yes: Stolfi, Johnson, Jones, Cuchiaro, Lambert, Langstein, Miller and Scott. Voting No: None. Abstaining: None. Absent: Lyon. Motion passed by majority. Meeting adjourned at 8:54 p.m. EDT. Respectfully Submitted, Matina E. Johnson Secretary Y.T.C.A., In

Johnson reported that the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, Inc. hereby granted permission for the following club to hold Specialty shows on the following dates: CLUB: Delaware Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club AM Specialty (Sweepstakes and 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy AM only) (Breed and Toy Obedience AM only) (Conformation, NOHS); PM Specialty (Conformation, NOHS) on Friday, August 21, 2020 at The Inn at Reading, 1040 North Park Road, Reading, PA 19610. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America received a request from the Mount Rainier Yorkshire Terrier Club requesting YTCA’s approval to move to a new event date for back-to-back concurrent Specialties including one Sweepstakes event in 2020. NEW BUSINESS: REFORMATTING OF CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS – Director Teresa Cuchiaro completed the reformatting of the YTCA Constitution and By Laws project by adding a table of contents (TOC), facilitating TOC section labels, cleaning up and making the text and indentation more uniform, line justifying the full body of content, and otherwise formally formatting the document. CALL to ORDER: President Leslie Stolfi called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. EDT. She welcomed everyone to the

Parent Club National Specialty in Midwest City, OK.

REPORT of the PRESIDENT: President Leslie Stolfi introduced all of the Board Members who were in attendance: Robbe Lyon...Vice President...Washington Matina E. Johnson...Secretary...Alabama Melissa Jones...Treasurer...Mississippi Ken Lambert….Director…Oklahoma Pamela A. Langstein...Director…New York Georgina Miller...Director...California Absent: Teresa Cuchiaro…Director…New Jersey Helen Scott...Director...Arizona REPORT of the VICE PRESIDENT: Vice President Robbe Lyon reported the following: The YTCA and YTCAF have a joint agreement with the Canine Health Foundation to support a research project from Dr. Kenneth Simpson at Cornell University. The goal of the research is to identify a marker for the development of genetic testing for protein losing enteropathy. Since the signs of PLE often do not occur until middle age, we need early detection, especially before breeding. The research project started on March 22, 2018. The YTCA and YTCAF made a joint initial payment of $13,319 with the remaining $36,418 to be made in four equal payments of $9,105 every six months. Two of those payments have been submitted and the outstanding balance is now $18,208.

Page 17: Mission Statement - Yorkshire Terrier · ^To preserve and protect the Yorkshire Terrier breed, as recognized by the AKC. To provide education and encourage the breeding of true type,

Funding for this project has been generated by individual donations, the Purina Parent Club Partnership Program and investment earnings in the YTCA Donor Advised Fund account, totaling $27,252 to date. Additional funding of $9,166 will be needed to cover the remaining costs. A recent report form Dr. Simpson/s lab indicates that they are hoping to recruit samples from 136 yorkies with PLE and 205 controls (yorkshire terriers over 10 years old who have no history of GI signs and normal serum albumin levels). To date, they have received bold samples from 42 PLE and 116 controls and genotyped most of these samples. They are seeking an additional 92 samples and 89 controls. This is where we really need your help now. You and all of your yorkie acquaintances are encouraged to submit samples. Accomplishments of the YTCA Foundation for 2019

PLE RESEARCH GRANT

The year 2019 found the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Foundation continuing with the YTCA Parent club to co-fund the Simpson PLE (Protein Losing Enteropathy) Research project at Cornell University. AKC Canine Health Foundation gave approval to go forward with the grant in late January 2018. Dr. Kenneth Simpson is conducting research to identify the genetic factors that would enable the development of a genetic marker-based risk test for Yorkshire Terriers. This will allow breeders the ability to make informed decisions with the intent of eliminating PLE in the Yorkshire Terrier breed. PLE is a condition of particular interest to Yorkies which have up to 10 times the risk for developing PLE as other breeds. Although PLE affects other breeds, it appears that the condition in Yorkshire Terriers may be unique. It becomes evident in adult dogs with no way of screening. We continue to encourage Yorkie lovers to submit samples to be included in the study.

RABIES CHALLENGE FUND

For several years, the Rabies Challenge Fund has been involved in a study to prove the immunity to Rabies extends far longer than one or three years as the vaccine label suggests. Rabies, the most powerful of veterinary vaccines, has been known to cause severe adverse reactions, even death, and more so in a dog who received the shot previously. The Rabies Challenge Study has shown that Rabies immunity extends far beyond one to three years. For each year thereafter, immunity declined. The fourth year after the initial shot showed less protection and it continued to drop in the fifth year. The Rabies Challenge Fund studies are in their fourth of seven planned years. It is hoped that rabies vaccines may be given as infrequently as five to seven years with full efficacy. The Foundation, with your help, is pleased to say we have contributed $12,500 to this worthwhile endeavor.

IN MEMORIAM As we draw closer to the week of Westminster and the Yorkshire Terrier Specialties that run prior, not a day goes by knowing that at this time of the year was like Christmas for my mother, Doreen Hubbard. My Mother, Doreen lived for these shows and for about 45 years, never once missed attending. On August 29, 2018 my mother passed away at the wonderful age of 93. And to say my mother lived for the breed is an understatement. She started in Canada with one Yorkie in the 60’s and quickly developed the Yorkboro line.

Page 29: Mission Statement - Yorkshire Terrier · ^To preserve and protect the Yorkshire Terrier breed, as recognized by the AKC. To provide education and encourage the breeding of true type,

She created this line by her own keen eye and adding existing lines such as Mayfair and Wildweir. My mother moved to the US in 1978 where she continued breeding and showing. She truly believed that you always breed to the standard and better your breeding to embrace that. Through her 50 years of breeding, she had great success in the ring with 3 Best of Breeds at her beloved Westminster and multiple Best in Show winners through the years. Doreen bred over 150 Champions in the US and Canada. When you have this commitment to the breed, you are also aware of the challenges of the breed where health is related. This is the reason my mother was a champion herself for the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Foundation. She worked tirelessly to breed not just a conformationally correct dog but a healthy one. She served on the board of the Foundation for years and was one of the Founding members. It is for this reason that in her Will she left the Foundation $5000, and verbally requested that as her daughter, to please auction off and donate the proceeds of her collection of Yorkshire Terrier memorabilia to the Foundation as well. In true Doreen style, on February 9, 2019 we held a Memorial Dinner and Cocktail reception at the New Yorker Hotel, the weekend of the Yorkshire Terrier Specialties. Allof her beloved items were hand carried to the event and were placed for silent auction. We had standing room only with over 100 in attendance and raised $5,024.00 for the Foundation. Shannon Johnson

ACTIVITY REPORT Income Revenue consisting of donations restricted/PLE ($8,483.14) and unrestricted ($6,588.94), memorials, auction sales and interest provided an income of $15,089.53 for the year. The Expenses incurred totaled $12,052.23. The breakdown of income and expenses is shown on the following pie charts. The Financial Committee will continue to budget priorities and allocation of funds with the approval of the Board members.

The Foundation’s annual fall auction proved to be another successful fundraiser for 2019. Yorkie enthusiasts from near and far came out to bid on various one of a kind items which included hand painted ornaments, artist signed prints, several one of a kind hand painted jewelry boxes, and much more. The auction netted an income of $957.36. We are excited to be presenting a collection of items from the estate of Elissa Taddie, a longtime supporter of the Foundation at a future date. The annual online auction is one of our biggest sources of annual revenue. We are always appreciative of the generous donations from estates of fanciers and former collectors of the Yorkshire Terrier breed. Anyone wishing to donate items please contact Linda Grimm at [email protected].

which results in a percentage of their order amount being donated back to the Foundation by Amazon. Overall, it’s been a productive year for fundraising.

The YTCA Foundation will continue its fundraising efforts with the two methods (Ebay and Etsy) in order to increase income. The Ebay site has been a successful option for selling unique one-of-a-kind items, and 100% of proceeds goes directly to the Foundation through Ebay's “Selling for Charity” program. The Foundation also has an Etsy store where unique Yorkie items are sold to benefit the Foundation. Social media has been used for advertising and has helped to bring new members to the Foundation’s Facebook page where they can learn about the Foundation’s Mission and fundraising efforts. The Foundation continues to use the charitable organization smile.amazon.com. Please remember when you shop Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and tag Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Foundation for your charity. This gives the Foundation a percentage of your purchase amount at no cost to you. This donation is made by Amazon, but only if you designate the Foundation to receive it. AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com) you need to select the Foundation as your charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. The site will remember your designation and then every time you shop through smile.amazon.com will result in a donation. We are pleased to announce the YTCA Foundation’s website has a new design. This newly revised design allows for quick and easy access to current Foundation information. The Foundation’s Activity and Current Grant Support information is now located on the front “home page”. Honors and Memorials are easily accessible. The many ways to support the YTCA Foundation’s efforts are clearly listed with a direct donation button through PayPal. Our future auctions will be added accordingly with item information and easy updates for bids. Thank you to AIT for their support. Please feel free to take a look at YTCAF.org. During the month of December, The YTCA Foundation had information on display at the “Meet the Breeds” Yorkshire Terrier booth at the AKC National Championship Dog Show presented by Royal Canin in Orlando, Florida. Brochures were available on the PLE Research Project, smile.amazon.com along with current and past research. We are pleased to announce members Gloria Bloch-Robinson and Janet Jackson have accepted to continue their positions on the YTCA Foundation Board until 2022. We are looking forward to a successful 2020 as we move forward to a healthier future for our Yorkshire Terriers. Step by step, dollar by dollar, grant by grant, the YTCA Foundation continues to support research seeking answers to problems within our breed. We welcome your comments, questions, and of course any donations you may wish to contribute. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

What’s new at AKC? How about the new AKC Temperament Test! “What is the AKC Temperament Test? Have you noticed that some breeds of dogs are friendly, some are

independent, and others may be somewhat reserved? With strangers? These are all characteristics of temperament. The AKC Temperament Test, the ATT, is a temperament Test designed for all breeds. The ATT, a pass--‐fail noncompetitive test, assesses the reaction of any breed to stimuli in the surrounding world. In the ATT, dogs are tested on the following six categories: Social, Auditory, Visual, Tactile (touch), Proprioceptive (motion) and an Unexpected Stimulus. The ATT screens for fear, shyness, inability to

recover, and lack of cooperation. Desired traits are that the dog will be emotionally stable, cooperative, inquisitive, appropriately social for its breed, and biddable. All dogs who pass the ATT twice under two different approved ATT Evaluators may earn the AKC Temperament Test title. The ATT is administered by AKC licensed or member clubs. The ATT may be held in conjunction with another AKC event such as a dog show or trial or as a standalone (AKC club) event. Why take the AKC Temperament Test? For purebred dogs, each breed’s parent club has a written breed standard that includes information on the breed’s temperament. Taking the ATT allows dog owners to determine how close their individual dog’s temperament is to the breed standard. For the owners of mixed breed dogs, the ATT may provide insight on the temperament of individual dogs. The ATT provides information about a dog’s reactions to a variety of stimuli. ATT testing can identify behaviors related to temperament that can be addressed through training.” (quoted from the AKC ATT Evaluator Guide). Test Procedure: Dogs must be at least 1 year of age to test. The test requires a ring at least 40 x 50 feet and 3 to 5 stewards. Before entering the ring the dog owner will fill out the breed’s temperament from the Breed Standard and the Evaluator will go over the temperament when the handler enters the ring. The team will then go through the different tests at the direction of the Evaluator. The dogs are tested for three different choices in each of the six categories. One choice in Visual and one choice in Tactile are required - the Umbrella Opening in Visual and the Walk on Wire Grate in Tactile. The rest of the choices come from the Evaluator’s guide at the evaluator’s discretion. The dogs are scored on a scale of 0 to 4 in each individual test item. A dog who scores 0 on any item cannot pass the test. Scoring a 1 on more than one item means a fail. A score of 2 on more than 3 items means a fail any sign of aggression or extreme shyness is a fail and soiling the ring means a fail. Early Temperament tests were thought to be predictive, that is, if a dog did not pass a temperament test it was deemed unsuitable for certain types of work. With increase in dog trainer knowledge about behavior, it has been recognized that behaviors can be modified, the ATT is meant to provide a “prescriptive” approach to temperament. That means that id a behavior is shown during the test, the dog owner can work on improving the problem area. Temperament is not…. physical characteristics of a dog, learned behaviors such as sit, down and the AKC Canine Good Citizen test is a test of behavior – it is not a temperament test! Yorkshire Terrier Database Helen Scott

Recently, as you may be aware, the AKC has announced their decision to include the Grand Champion Level within the title of

the dog. A Grand Champion title with an achieved level of Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum will now be shown by AKC as GCHB

CH, GCHS CH, GCHG CH, or GCHP CH.

My YT Database has been reformatted to also show the GCH levels within the title.

The YT Database is based on the American and Canadian conformation yorkie and now contains over 71,000 yorkie entries of

which 52,000 are AKC registered. The Database reflects a total of nearly 10,300 AKC Champions including 323 AKC GCH

Champions as of May 31, 2016. There are a total of 3,067 Canadian Champions in the Database, 727 of which are also AKC

Champions. Show records of AKC conformation yorkies as well as titles earned by 1,680 performance yorkies are maintained

in the Database. Records are also maintained of the DQ yorkies. Following a period of no DQ’s since 9/29/2012, one DQ did

occur in November of 2014. Conditionally registered "Q" yorkies of unverifiable parentage and also records of parti-colors are

included in the Database.

In recognizing that imports from Europe have been on the increase, I have been working over the last several years to input

pedigrees of those foreign kennels so that all yorkies in our pedigrees are available within the Database. The Database can

trace the pedigrees of most of the yorkies ten generations and more back into England and Ireland. There are approximately

3,600 yorkies from the United Kingdom and thousands more from mainland Europe and other countries in the Database. The

Database at this point is what I would call "mature". The information on the dogs is comprehensive and shows the history of

the American Yorkshire Terrier, and of the accomplishments of the breeders, owners and the yorkies through the years in the

ring and of their offspring.

The sources for the Database build have been the purchase of the AKC studbooks going back to 1888 as well as the English

studbooks back to 1947; also accumulated is a virtual library of books, periodicals, publications and reports. When I decided to

trace the pedigree of my sweet Nicole back in 1997, I couldn't have imagined the path I was embarking on and still travel.

Free for YTCA members, five generation pedigrees or prospective puppy planning pedigrees may be requested by email to me

at [email protected]. Yes free. I have never accepted compensation for pedigrees. If a person would like to compensate in

some way, my suggestion would be a contribution to the YTCA Foundation for disease research.

In addition to the regular information expected on a pedigree, the following, if applicable, are shown for the subject yorkie

and some of these items are included for the yorkies in the body of the pedigree: Canadian & Foreign Reg#, DNA#, CHIC#, BBE

Award, CH Pointed.

If requesting a pedigree and the yorkie has been shown or bred, I just need the registered name and Reg# of the yorkie. Also

please include the yorkie's Call Name - the call name is included in the pedigree heading. The Call Name of the proposed Sire

and Dam are also needed for a puppy planning pedigree. If the yorkie has not been shown or bred, it likely is not in the

database and therefore I would need the registered name & reg#, name of Sire and Dam and their reg#s. I usually reply back

with the pedigree on an email within a day. Any questions, give me a call. My phone number is in the Roster.
