2017/2018 SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

WHAT DOES HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF IONIA COUNTY DO?

Habitat for Humanity of Ionia County (HFHIC) offers families in need

of safe, decent and affordable housing a “hand up, not a hand out.”

In order to partner with HFHIC, the applicant must complete and

return an application for one of our programs with required

documentation. The application is then presented to a committee of

educated decision makers on the topic of homeownership, fiscal

responsibility and fair housing laws. Once a partner is selected, they

are required to do sweat equity hours (families working side by side

with volunteers to build their homes/maintain the exterior of their

home) depending on the program chosen to participate in. Then,

HFHIC will make either the mortgage payment or monthly

re-payment no more than 30% of the household’s gross income. This

frees up money for food, child care, medicine, savings, etc. Research

has shown that decent housing improves health, Increases children’s

education achievement and strengthens community ties.

PROGRAMS OFFERED TO FAMILIES IN IONIA COUNTY

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) is our newest

program, which offers current homeowners in Ionia

County the opportunity to partner with HFHIC to reclaim

the exterior of their home with pride and dignity.

HFHIC offers a repayment plan for up to $3,000.00 and

will ensure that the monthly re-payment amount with

combined current home financial obligations will not

exceed 30% of the household’s gross income.

Street in Ionia. In one day, eight ABWK

projects were completed.




Habitat Hope is a program offered that seeks to educate

low-income families and individuals in order to help them

make smart decisions regarding improving their housing

situation through financial coaching. If an applicant does not

qualify to partner with HFHIC for either the ABWK

Partnership or the Habitat Home Partnership they have the

option to participate in this program free of cost. The only

two requirements are that the family or individual has the

goal of becoming a long-term, successful homeowner and

they earn less than 60% of the area median income

annually. The goal is to have the partner family or individual

ready to purchase a home, either with HFHIC or with a

conventional mortgage company.


Habitat Home Partnerships offers low income

families the opportunity to become homeowners either

through rehabilitating or building simple and affordable

homes. Homeowner partners are required to take a

homeowner responsibility course and complete 250

sweat equity hours (families working side by side with

volunteers to build their home). They will have the

responsibility of a monthly mortgage payment no more

than 30% of their income and are also required to pay a

1% down payment of the sale price of their home. HFHIC

will apply for Down Payment Assistant grant to help the

partner family with the cost of their home.
