August 2016!!!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ!

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

This is one of my favorite Biblical texts. It's the perfect reminder for you and I to embrace our identity in Christ. A reminder that when we are in the inner circle that those outside are just as valued as those in the loop- a reminder that when we feel left out that we are just as valued as those in the know. This text brings us back to reality when we are feeling high and mighty, and lifts us up when we are feeling abandoned and forgotten.

In truth, I think this text is significant for Christ's Church as we move forward in mission. This summer we have had multiple opportunities to show unity in Christ. Gentle Worship is a constant reminder to us of the ministry that happens when Christians come together to witness to the love of God in Christ Jesus. Flood Relief called folks from St. Paul and other Christians around Defiance to partner with Christians throughout the country in delivering much needed supplies to isolated parts of West Virginia. Defiance Community VBS shows the community the amazing grace of God as members of various congregations use their gifts to share the wonderful message of love and hope in Jesus Christ. Finally, The Tent Revival calls together folks of many traditions, even the Mormon Missionaries were in the congregation on Thursday night. We come together to worship, to praise, to pray. We come together to stand against the narrative that people are destined to be in conflict.

I said at the Revival, I said it on the radio with Rick Small, I said it to Tim McDonough in the newspaper interview and I want to repeat it again here. Just because the media narrative is that people MUST be in conflict due to race, socio-economic realities, backgrounds, gender, beliefs – we have the opportunity, and I would argue from Galatians the RESPONSIBILITY to stand against the narrative that permeates our culture this summer.

As Christians, we seek unity. We will have a chance this fall to hopefully join with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters to study a document forged in unity, “From Conflict to Communion” - a study of 500 years of Lutheran – Roman Catholic conflict, and 50 years of intense theological discussion on the ways in which we differ, seeking to find consensus in our understanding.

As we move deeper into political season, as television news inundates us with anger and divisiveness, as the world seems to swirl deeper into anger and conflict may we heed the call of St. James, “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slower to anger.” Blessings

Prayer list information Next time you’re about to submit a request for inclusion on the prayer list please ask the following questions. 1 Did that person give permission to the office? 2 Does that person wish the information to be shared

publicly? If the answer to either question is “NO” your prayer request violates the Health Insurance Portabil-ity and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

If we do not have personal permission for inclusion we will only publish first names. These are the guidelines from the ELCA provided at last Fall’s Synod Conference meetings.

Also, please be aware that the pastor and church office are not automatically notified of your admission to a hospital, due to the HIPPA laws. If your stay is a planned one, please contact the church office or have a relative contact us. In some cases, even if you tell the hospital it is all right to contact us, it may not occur. You personally contacting the church office should be the primary way the message of your hospitalization reaches the pastor. Thank you for your help in this manner.

Please continue to raise our nation, its leaders, and our personnel "in harm's way" in your prayers. Let us not forget to pray for them and to thank God-for His blessings. We, as Christians, should also witness God's love by praying for our enemies in all this. Thank You...

The Service Guild would like to thank members of our Luther League (Felicity Barker, Kaylee Brashear, and Suzi McBride) for helping with our luncheon on June 13th in Luther Hall. You were all wonderful! Gratefully, The Service Guild **************************************************************************************************************************************

Thanks to our church family for the outpouring of support during the loss of mom, Marilyn Mehring. Especially Pastor Dave for his visits to mom and the meaningful service that was so much my mom. Also, the group of people who put on the delicious meal. God’s blessing to all. Joan, Buggs Sierra & family

**************************************************************************************************************************************

I would like to thank everyone for their visits, cards and prayers for me while I was in Laurel's recuperating from my broken arm. I am home now and doing very well. Thank you again, Martha Cooper **************************************************************************************************************************************

I want to thank everyone in our church for all of their support and prayers over the past 3 years as my daughter, Susan Harris, fought a brave, long battle with cancer. I want to thank Pastor Dave for the beautiful memorial service, Lori for the organ music and John Dale for his part in the service. He always does such a good job! Thank you to Jane Parker and the “funeral crew” for the wonderful meal. I heard many compliments. I can’t thank the girls from Beta Circle enough for their 3 year support of Susan’s family and myself. Thank you to Bill Parker for the DVD of the service. I was able to let my sister, Carol, (whom Susan was named after and she is her God Mother) see the service. Thanks for the cards, the prayers, and the support for our family. Jan Sisco, Scott, Cody, Sheldon, and Janaya

**************************************************************************************************************************************

The Stained Glass windows maintenance has been completed and replacement windows have been ordered for Luther Hall. We have funds to pay for part of the work but the weekly offerings are down. Please consider increasing your stewardship as we need to pay for these improvements when completed. Jim Ehlinger Church Council President **************************************************************************************************************************************

THRIVENT – AUGUST 2016

How fast the time can fly by when we are busy. St. Paul has been very busy this summer—the VBS program at Defiance College was a big success again with so many great volunteers. The Tent Revival that so many people have worked on for many months has been a huge amount of work—but many hands help lighten the load. Our Thrivent fundraisers were able to provide some financial help to support this event. Thank you to the many Thrivent members who stepped up to give Pastor Dave, Nancy and Julie a lot of support in the various committees for this event. The music each night was so uplifting and created a great atmosphere for all who came to enjoy it. Saturday night’s B-B-Q was tasty and all the food items were delicious. Working together to make it happen is what we do. Check out the many photos taken by Stacy Barker—great job catching the mood and flavor of the event. What a wonderful opportunity to also have our worship in the big tent on Sunday morning! A great BIG THANK YOU to all!

Order your member calendar – Free from Thrivent Magazine by Oct. 10

The 2017 member calendar (9-by-12 inch) will feature the photography of our members and

will be offered directly to our members for free, courtesy of Thrivent magazine. The 2017

calendar will feature unique photos taken by Thrivent members that tell their story and show

“Christianity Around the World.”

The traditional 14-by-13-inch version of

the 2017 calendar will be distributed to

churches, schools and organizations.

However, this will be the last year that the

traditional calendar will be distributed.

How to order your free 9-by-12 inch calendar (limit one per member): Mail the business

reply card found in the September issue of Thrivent magazine, or starting Aug. 15, call the

Member Connection Center at 800-847-4836. Orders must be placed by Oct. 10, and

calendars will be mailed in November.

As the summer comes to a close, we will be getting ready for school at the end of this month. And it also means back to our full calendar of activities at St. Paul. Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation, savor the memories you’ve made and come back refreshed and ready to go. Thank you for your continued support of all our events.
