Frequently asked questions about the Plaque Busters 5K RUN/WALK! September 15, 2012 at Technology Park in John’s Creek, GA Do you have to be a regular runner or walker to run or walk in this race? -No. All skill levels are welcome. Any person can participate. ALL ages are welcome…kids and adults! There is a kid’s fun run at 9:15am and the main run/walk is at 8:00am. (T-shirt pick up earlier) If I am a serious runner, is this a course that can be used as a qualifying race for my record? -Yes. It is a certified course/race. For the serious runner, this race can be used as a qualifying race! When should I register? -Now, as soon as possible so you can get your T-shirt size desired and be eligible for all sorts of prizes. Where do I register? -Online at www.plaquebusters.net If I am running for a specific school, how do I designate that? -The registration site will allow you to state which school and which grade or special team you are running for at your school on the web site. *We ask that your school also submit a final list of the teams to us through the site, www.plaquebusters.net. Registration to ensure a T-shirt of desired size must be by the deadline of September 7th! Can anyone register after September 7th? Yes, see the registration online. However, late registrants get a T-shirt only on a, “first come first serve” basis, and we cannot guarantee your desired size at late registration. Do you have to be in a special group, organization, or part of a school community to run or walk in the race? -No. Any adult/child can participate. Can any school participate? -Yes. Any public school or private school can participate. Are all schools guaranteed a $1000 reward if they participate? -No. To be eligible for a $1000 reward back to the school, a school must have a minimum of 30 adults and 30 kids registered to run. Once they have 30 kids and 30 adults registered online they are in the competition to win one of the $1000 rewards. The more kids and adults that register to run/walk the race, the better the school’s chance of winning one of the $1000 rewards. If our school wins one of the rewards, which department or grade level does the reward go to in the school? -The $1000 reward will go to the grade level, department, sports team, or extracurricular team that has the most runners on their team. So for example, if the 7th graders at Heart Middle School recruit 50 runners, the 6th graders recruit 52 runners, the soccer team recruits 100 runners, and the cheerleading team recruits 49 runners…then the money would be awarded to the soccer department! Can a person run/walk for more than one team or grade? -No. Can a school have runners/walkers run for the school as a whole? -Yes. Can people who do not have kids in school but wish to run or walk for a school, register as a school team runner? -Yes. Schools can recruit anyone to run on their school teams. How many $1000 rewards can be given? -Great question! There will be a minimum of 4 different $1000 rewards given, provided there are four eligible schools. However, the more participation the schools have, the more availability for more rewards. If I am one of Dr. Gaskill’s patients, is there a prize awarded? -Yes. Dr. Gaskill’s patients get entered into a raffle drawing for a $100 gift prize! Further questions? You may contact us through www.plaquebusters.net or by phone at (770) 495-9995.

Attendance Myths #1

Does it really matter if my child misses a few extra days each year? Here

is one of the myth’s about student attendance. Research-based from the

Department of Education.

1. Missing a few days of school each year is normal and doesn’t

matter that much.

• Data indicate that missing more than five days of school each year,

regardless of the cause, impacts student academic performance and

starts shaping attitudes about school.

• From the 6th grade through the 9th grade, student attendance is a

better predictor of dropping out than standardized test scores.

• Excused absences and unexcused absences have similar impact on

student academic performance.

Sensory Room Donations Needed

The sensory room assists students with special needs in regulating their

nervous systems in order to better participate to their school learning

environment. The sensory room provides students with a quiet area (for

calming), opportunities for extra movement (swing, rocking, bouncing),

and additional sensory experiences (tactile, smells, visual). The sensory

room helps the inactive student become alert, and the overstimulated

child to be calmed. Here is a list of items needed to complete this room:

Rice, 20 lbs.of beans, string lights, lamps, lava lamps, floam,

light up toys, small kiddie pool, inset puzzles, busy books,

variety of textured fabrics, light covers, crash pads,

visual timer, squeeze machine

Please send items to the school, Attention: Karen Elkins

Lake Windward Elementary PTA News lakewindward.pbwiki.com

I’ve been a Lake Windward Elementary parent for a long time. My twins, Abby and Ben, attended LWE from

Kindergarten through 5th grade. They are 6th graders now at Webb Bridge Middle School and I’m happy (and

relieved) to report that they have transitioned beautifully from elementary to middle school. They are

excelling academically, as well as socially. They are fully prepared for the new adventures and challenges

that middle school brings. For that, I thank the teachers and staff here at LWE. The teachers my twins had

over the years were fantastic! They set high expectations for my kids and helped them meet and exceed

those expectations year after year. It wasn’t all academic - they were also nurturing my children and

teaching them to become good citizens of their class, their school and the world. These wonderful teachers

paved the path for the future success of my kids and I can’t thank them enough.

Ms. Messina said something during her speech at the 5th Grade Graduation last year that really struck me.

She said the Webb Bridge Middle School staff is always very complimentary of Lake Windward students. They

say our students are well-prepared for the rigors of middle school and that our students are good citizens of

the Webb Bridge community. That is a testament to the good work of our teachers and staff here at Lake

Windward Elementary.

I say this to let you know that our students are in good hands!

Our teachers and staff are doing their part to help our kids reach their potential, both

now AND later. Trust me, I’m seeing the proof firsthand through my 6th graders!

I can’t sign off without mentioning my youngest child, Will. He’s a 1st grader this year

and the same path to success is being paved for him. Thank you teachers and staff of

Lake Windward Elementary!

Please feel free to contact me with any ideas, suggestions or questions at

[email protected].

Important

Information

for Voluteers!

Fulton County Schools has revised training

requirements for those volunteering in its schools. It's

a new procedure, but it's quick and easy - we promise!

Volunteers must complete a Volunteer Safety Form.

Many of you completed this form at Sneak Peek. If

not, it's available in the front office or at:

http://portal.fultonschools.org/departments/Operati

ons/Safety_Security/Documents/Volunteer%20Informa

tion%20Form%202012.pdf.

Additionally, volunteers are now required to complete

Child Abuse and Neglect Training. The training is

available online and consists of a 10 minute video

presentation followed by a 2-question quiz. Once you

complete the quiz, you must print out your certificate

of completion. There is a computer station in the

front office where you can complete this training or

you may do it at home by clicking on the following

link:

http://media2.fultonschools.org/DistrictContent/Trai

ning/ChildAbuseandNeglect/player.html

If you are unable to print your Certificate of

Completion, you may use this alternate form

Both forms must be turned into the front office prior

this new mandate!

Sept. 7 – 24

The fundraiser has gotten off to a great start! Thanks for all who have already

placed orders.

worksheet for your records.

3. The product will arrive by early November and there will be multiple pick

dates at the school.

Remember, out-of-town family and friends can help our school by shopping at

the Innisbrook Online Store, www.innisbrook.com. Send emails to let them

know about our fundraiser!
