Live the Liturgy
Inspiration for the Week A Kingdom divided against itself
cannot stand. Is the kingdom of your soul
divided? We are often confronted with
choices that appear to be good but in essence
are not. We struggle with choosing good
over evil and right from wrong. Conflicts
often exist within, and we walk through life
with a divided heart. We realize what is
needed to live with God but find ourselves
doing the exact opposite. As we gather with
our brothers and sisters and seek God's gift
of Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only
be united with one another in Faith but
united with God within. All conflicts and
divisions can cease, and we can act with a
focused, strong, and determined heart.
Words to Inspire the Faithful ”Among all things that are lovable,
there is one that is more lovable than the
rest, and that most lovable of all things
is LIFE”. ~St. Anthony
Wave on high grand old flag
For the sake of all who care;
You're the symbol of our freedom,
The answer to our prayer.
You give us strength to hold our ground
Against the brazen few
Who would test our mettle,
Our fortitude, dedicated to you.
Your colors stand for more
Than what we learned in school;
They blend together,
Form a wrapper, for the golden rule.
You guide the way we carry on
When faced with a mighty test;
Each minute and hour of every day
We resolve to do our best
To stand as one before the terror
That violates nature's laws,
To protect the rights of all
Who pledge allegiance to your cause.
Wave on high, grand old flag,
it's you we loudly cheer;
You radiate a wondrous spirit,
That helps us conquer fear.
When hope, care, and promise Are the world's greatest need,
You shine bright from way on high
A banner to take the lead. -American Banner by C.K. Roshong
Flag Day – June 14
In 1777, the Continental
Congress adopted the Stars and
Stripes pattern for the national flag.
Flag Day was first celebrated in
1877, the centennial of the U.S.
flag’s existence. It was not until
1949, that President Harry Truman
signed legislation making Flag Day a
day of national observance.
Let us show our national pride
by flying the American flag on that
day!

Why Do We Do That? - Catholic Life Explained Question: Why do we celebrate the Heart of Jesus in the month of June? Answer: Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient practice. We can see its Scriptural origins in Jesus' own references to His Heart. "Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest ? for I am meek and humble of heart" (c.f. Matthew 11:28, 29). The devotion received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus appeared several times to a French religious sister, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pointing to His Heart. During this time, the Jansenist heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predestination for salvation. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed His love for all mankind: "Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing." He asked for a special feast celebrating His Sacred Heart on the Friday, following the Feast of Corpus Christi. Over time, June has become known as the Month of Sacred Heart.
10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds Himself facing stiff opposition from His family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize Him, for they said, 'He is out of His mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards. The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to His family can seem controversial. "Who are My mother and My brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what He is about. He has always known He would be about the business of His Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the New Covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of His listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "Do the Will of God."
Saint Anthony—Anthony of Padua
St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in 1220. He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy to those who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray for St. Anthony's intercession!
We Have Reached Our CMA Goal A sincere THANK YOU to all of the families who contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal this year. We have once again been able to meet our goal due to your very kind generosity. Over $44,000 that has been raised by our parish that will go to support the mission of our faith, to reach out and spread the Good News of the Gospel in our diocese.
“[Religious] freedom remains one of America’s most precious possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything
that would threaten or compromise it.” - Pope Francis
