Our EmphasesWestern North Carolina United Methodist Men have been faithful in their continued financial assistance of our major emphasis programs. We continue to solicit the support of members of United Methodist Men, as well as local churches, in funding these areas:• Upper Room Prayer Line – 800.251.2468: Available 24/7 to everyone needing
someone to pray with them. It answers more than 30,000 requests each month. We have witnessed changes in lives from the power of pray through the prayer line.
http://prayer-center.upperroom.org/request-prayer• Scouting: United Methodist Men nurture children, teens, and families through
outreach and evangelism and incorporating them into the life of the church may have tremendous, eternal results for the youth, their families and the Church. The overall focus is on five organizations: Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters (Amachi Partnership) Camp Fire USA and 4-H.
http://www.gcumm.org/ministries/scouting/• The Children’s Home: A safe haven for children and their families for more than a
century, The Children’s Home continues to transform lives based on the changing needs of children, families and society. www.tchome.org
• Scholarships for Second-Career Pastors: Men and women called into ministry often have a hard time supporting their families and paying seminary expenses as they work to become fully-qualified pastors.
• Missions: Our main focus is on disaster response, due to the accelerating wake of devastating natural disasters, but we encourage wide support and participation. More: http://www.wnccumc.org/mission-outreach and http://www.umcmission.org
Stop Hunger Now Vision: “To end hunger in our lifetime
by providing food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable
and by creating a global commitment to mobilize
the necessary resources.”
• Since 1998, this international hunger relief agency has fulfilled its commitment to end hunger by coordinating the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families worldwide.
• The meal packaging assembly program combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix, including 21 essential vitamins and minerals, into small meal packets.
• Each meal costs only 25 cents. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of two years and transports quickly.
• One SHN packaging event can result in the more than 1,000,000 packaged meals. International partners help Stop Hunger Now ship/distribute them in-country.
• Learn more about this ministry at http://www.stophungernow.org.

Rev. Dr. John Boggs
The Rev. Dr. Boggs is passionate about empowering laity for ministry, developing partnerships between local churches and public schools to work with children in poverty, and cultivating a missional imagination of the clergy and laity of the Blue Ridge District. He will “lift up the state-wide United Methodist movement called, ‘Congregations for Children (C4C),’ which works with children and families in poverty through relationships with our public schools.” With whom should I talk about having information, workshop, or brief plenary time for this opportunity? Dr. Boggs said, “I really believe we need more men doing mentoring, reading buddies, basic school volunteering,” and will provide information for this opportunity.
John Sherrod Boggs grew up in Brevard and is the son of Mrs. Peggy Boggs and the late William Grayson Boggs, Sr.
He graduated from Brevard High School in 1972 and earned his Associate of Arts degree from Brevard College in 1974, and went on to earn the Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Vincent College; Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University; and Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University.
Dr. Boggs has served churches in the Western NC Conference in Etowah, Cullowhee, Lake Junaluska, Charlotte, and Shelby. In 2008, he was appointed Superintendent of the Asheville District, which later to the expanded Blue Ridge District.
John and his wife, Anita, have been married for 31 years and they live in Arden. They have two daughters, one married with three children, and one engaged.
