Cummins steps in to help university hospital in Istanbul

Okan University’s state-of the art Akfirat Campus, Istanbul opened in 2006. Growth and expansion mean the university now teaches 63 undergraduate, 41 master and 13 Ph. D. programs under eight faculties, two vocational schools and three graduate schools.

Medical education and research have played an important part in the university’s life since the beginning. Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences are supplemented by a Vocational High School for Health Sciences, and a 700 m2 Hospital Simulation Center. These facilities and the academic expertise they represent are now working in support of the latest addition to the campus: a 250-bed teaching hospital.

As the country’s first Health Science Education

Complex, Okan University Hospital combines teaching

and healthcare, employs over 500 staff including

100 doctors, and has 10 operating theatres. The

hospital occupies an extensive 50,000 m2 site, and its

construction represented a significant building project.

Construction was already underway as the project

managers researched the best companies to supply

power for the new hospital, reducing them to a final

shortlist that included Cummins. Continuity of energy

supply was the primary need, and the reliability of

the company’s products is well recognised and

respected around the world. As Cummins outlined

C1675 D5 units were containerised to meet noise level constraints The containers were installed on specially laid concrete foundations

and sizing calculations. Cummins also understood the hospital’s noise level requirements and space limitations, and would be able to supply a solution to meet them.

By the end of the bidding process, Cummins had won and set about delivering the agreed solution. The generator sets were containerised to meet the size and low noise requirements. Concrete foundations were specially laid for the new power equipment. Cummins supplied and installed three custom-enclosed C1675 D5 generator sets and one factory-enclosed C38 D5, plus synchronisation panel and other ancillary equipment.

The Cummins Turkey team managed the project from start to finish, working closely with its local dealer, which assisted with aspects of project development and execution. Throughout the process, Cummins kept up the pace, helped with technical issues, and worked with dedication to provide the turnkey solution. The result was a fully featured emergency standby power system precisely tailored to the new hospital complex’s working environment.
