We were blessed to come home as this year’s District Champions! As a matter of fact, our school managed to get more overall points than the other three schools in our district combined! Mrs. Bowen and I have great news coming back from Academic Team District Competition today.

We were blessed to come home as this year’s District Champions! As a matter of fact, our school managed to get more overall points than the other three schools in our district combined!

PCHS Announce 2016 Governor’s Scholar Nominees

Pendleton County High School announces that six juniors have been selected as our nominees to the 2016 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program (GSP). This year’s nominees are: R. Ammerman, A. Booth, H. Hart, A. Hicks, S. Longworth, and M. Sydnor. These

students will now be in competition with other students from across the commonwealth for one of the approximately 1,000 places in the 2016 summer program.

The Governor’s Scholars Program is a stimulating, five-week, residential summer program for outstanding Kentucky students completing their junior year in high school. Established

in 1983, the popular program provides academic and personal growth in a challenging, non-traditional experience that balances a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life.

The Governor’s Scholar Program competition is open to all juniors. It is highly competitive

in nature and involves a lengthy application process. The students are selected based on multiple criteria that include academic record, ACT or PSAT test scores, personal essay, student resume that includes activities as well as demonstrated leadership and service.

Come join the MCTC faculty before you take your ACT examination and learn specific strategies that lend themselves well to sections of the ACT college entrance exam. Union University’s Rising Senior Program is designed for outstanding high school students who have completed their junior year and want to “try out” college during the month of June. Union University is located in Jackson, TN. Here are the highlights:

Earn up to 7 semester hours of college credit. Classes such as English composition, college algebra, laboratory science, history, and

psychology are available at a fraction of normal tuition costs. Participate in activities outside the classroom, ranging from community outreach projects

to movie nights to student development seminars.

Murray State University announces next summer's Commonwealth Honors Academy to be held June 4-June 25, 2016. This event brings together high school juniors from around the state for three weeks in an interdisciplinary living-learning environment. In order to qualify for the Academy student must have (1) completed the junior year of high school; (2) composite ACT of approximately 25 (or equivalent on the SAT, PSAT, or PLAN) and a 3.5 GPA; (3) other credentials, such as community involvement, class rank, and teacher recommendations are taken into consideration in the selection process.

Upon completion of the Academy students will:

receive six (6) hours of university studies credit have the opportunity to take six additional hours of tuition-free university courses at Murray State

University during their senior year be awarded a four-year $2,000 per year housing scholarship to Murray State University

Announcing the 2016 Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison University in Granville, OH June 12-16, 2016. The Denison Reynolds Workshop offers an inspiring week-long summer creative writing program for up to 36 current high school sophomores & juniors. At the workshop beginning writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction get the chance to develop their talents and hone their skills. Morning workshop groups are led by accomplished faculty. Afternoon classes focus on a choice of genres (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction) supplemented by classes with visiting writers and one-on-one sessions with faculty and staff. Students will be housed in residence halls.

Program fee, including room & board for the 8 day program is $1,300 - financial support is available

Volunteering in Pendleton County Schools

Volunteers play an important role at Pendleton County Schools, whether a person assists a teacher with getting materials ready for class, attending a field trip, working one on one with students they are all essential. As a result of KRS 161.148/KRS161.044: All parent volunteers that provide direct supervision of students must participate in a volunteer training (as designated by each district) and submit for a criminal record check. In Pendleton County the following is required:

1) Completion of volunteer handbook:

a. Handbooks are available from each school secretary, Bus Garage and online at www.pendleton.kyschools.us

click parent resources, click volunteer forms.

b. Completion of the 3 forms. Although some information is repetitive they go to different entities; Page 1 is the

application form, Page 2 is the Participation Statement which includes the understanding about confidentiality

and Page 3 is the Criminal Record Check form

c. All 3 must be completed and be legible for processing. They can be mailed to the address noted on the forms,

returned to the schools in a sealed envelope or dropped off at Room 301 Falmouth School Center.

d. Once received the expected turn- around time is one week or less. Once approved the volunteer is added to

the district list which is distributed to school secretaries. A letter from the Superintendent is forthcoming that

indicates you have been approved.

e. Volunteer records including criminal checks are good for 3 school years only. For example for records

processed anytime during this school year, they will expire during the school year of 2017-2018.
