Who We Are

The Management Information Systems Association (MISA) is a student organization that belongs to the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia.

Management Information System (MIS) is a hot topic that allows companies to blend the knowledge of people skills, information technology and strategy to make better and efficient decisions. Students at SFU learn how to manage unique projects and analyze business processes that is relevant in a real life work atmosphere.

MISA’s goal is to be the leader in developing and connecting quality SFU students interested in MIS with MIS industry professionals. To accomplish MISA’s goal, we facilitate events and workshops that create awareness of the MIS industry, develop skills related to MIS and connect students interested in MIS with industry professionals.

Partnering With MISA

MISA consists of a dedicated student executive team that wants to be in the forefront in connecting students with the IT professionals. We are the place to be, to develop necessary skills relevant to succeed in the IT industry. MISA provides events and workshops that are meant to provide more opportunities such as workshops about Microsoft Excel, SQL, and Business Object Software as well as our signature networking event, MISA Mixer. We aim to help students realize the importance of what they are learning and build knowledge beyond textbooks from real life examples. MISA provides students with high-caliber events. By working with the industry we integrate students and professionals with an engaging and fun environment. Our goal is to provide our MIS students with opportunities to open new doors to the future, while developing closer ties between SFU and the local IT industry. Signature Events and Programs MISA MIXER The theme of this year’s MISA Mixer is going to be IT Diversity and Involvement. We will bring a wide array of professionals from all dynamics of IT industry as well as various companies and organizations representing different career paths that are available to students. Our objective is to connect students to recently graduated individuals and those with long time tenure to offer their perspectives of the IT world. In attendance for this event will be employees from leading edge firms sharing their experience and industry insights. Representatives from Accenture, Deloitte, ICBC, ASUS, Active Network, Business Object, and CGA have attended in past year’s MISA Mixer. The establishing of ties could be beneficial as they can be drawn upon again in the future. MISA Mixer promises a lively and entertaining atmosphere! CAREER APPLICABLE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING (CATT) Whether you’re in the classroom or the workplace, computers and software applications are a fact of life. Each day we use tools and programs that have become an integral part of our education and work, but often are unable to take full advantage of each program’s abilities. The courses students take at SFU often require them to use these office applications, but to get an edge and learn the intricacies of each program, MISA is proud to host these CATT workshops where either student or sponsored instructors well versed in these applications provide quality instruction to students who are looking to get that extra edge. Currently, CATT provides training in the following areas, while always looking to expand its borders: Python, Android Application, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Access, Dreamweaver, Excel, Flash, HTML, PHP, PowerPoint, Visio, and Word.

Event Sponsorship Options We recognize that you may prefer to sponsor our organization on a per-event basis, and so we are pleased to provide to you the option of event sponsorship. MISA MIXER $300 The MISA Mixer brings together students and industry professionals from a limited number of companies. This event promises to be a fun-filled Evening, and is a great opportunity for firms to showcase themselves through casual interaction with undergraduate MIS students.
