INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Miramichi Lodge has been an accredited long-

term care home for almost ten years. The Home

recently underwent their most recent accredita-

tion process with Accreditation Canada earlier in

2013. Accreditation Canada awards on the fol-

lowing four decisions following the on-site sur-

vey: Accredited with Exemplary Standing

Accredited with Commendation

Accredited

Not Accredited

Accreditation Canada recently advised that

Miramichi Lodge has been awarded their highest

standing, “Accredited with Exemplary Stand-

ing”. Warden Peter Emon states that this

achievement demonstrates the Home’s commit-

ment to ongoing quality improvement. Mayor

Janice Visneskie-Moore, Chair of the Health

Committee, added that she would like to take this

opportunity to thank the staff and management

for their efforts and dedication to the provision of

safe, quality health services.

Meals on Wheels Gift Certificates Available

The Miramichi Lodge Meals on Wheels

program provides hot, fresh, and nutritious

meals in an effort to assist seniors or dis-

abled adults to live in their own homes for

as long as possible.

Dedicated volunteers deliver the lunch meal

the residents who live at Miramichi Lodge.

This means that the meals are approved by a

Registered Dietitian and prepared by quali-

fied staff. The meal includes soup, a main

entrée, a side dish, a muffin or tea biscuit

and a dessert for a total cost of $11.00 per

meal.

Such a busy year this has been, but so important to take a moment

and recognize the goals reached. Following an excellent response

and outcome from our resident and family satisfaction survey, we

also underwent accreditation and achieved exemplary standing

from Accreditation Canada. At the same time, a dedicated team

participated in a Health Quality Ontario Residents First initiative

whereby leading practices in preventing responsive behaviours

were implemented on one Resident Home Area with success and

the team is currently rolling these practices out to the next unit.

Project lead Ria Macdonald, RCC, recently presented the program

to the Health Committee where the team was recognized with a

Residents First Award.

Thank you to the Miramichi Lodge Auxiliary for their recent dona-

tion which was used to purchase a bariatric bed & trapeze, as well

as fund an art therapy program.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jean Benton,

Nurse Practitioner for her over 13 years of dedicated service to the

residents at the Lodge and introduce Greg Crowder, our new

NP. Greg, a seasoned RN, is originally an Ontario boy, but comes

to us via South Carolina, where he pioneered the role of the NP in

acute care. I would also like to welcome back Karen Gauthier,

Physiotherapist. Karen was the contracted physiotherapist for the

Home for approximately 6 years and we are thrilled to welcome

her on staff.

Merry

Christmas!

Foundation Update Much has happened since our last update. On Saturday, May 4 we

hosted our 10th annual fundraising gala – ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’.

Once again, kudos to our amazing gala committee for all their hard

work in making it such a successful event and an evening to re-

member. Work has already begun on the 2014 Gala – ‘Live It Up’

and tickets are now available – what a perfect Christmas gift!!

The Foundation didn’t take the summer off – Brian and Florence

Wilson spearheaded a new annual event we are calling

‘Fiddlefeast’. In recognition of the Fiddling contest taking place

we offered up an evening of local entertainment, a barbeque and an

opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbour from near and

far right here at the Lodge. Thanks to the many volunteers, friends,

family members and staff who jumped in to help out...it was a great

time!

We would not be able to do the events and raise the funds we do if

not for the kindness of our volunteers. Please think about

this...more hands make less work. We welcome with open arms

anyone interested in spending as little or as much time to help us

with our quest to continue to make the lives of our residents more

comfortable. Join the Foundation; sit on one of our event commit-

tees; assist us with our participation in bingos at the Boardwalk

Gaming Centre; attend our events or help with an event the day of.

The time commitment is as much or as little as you have to give.

To find out how you can become involved with the Miramichi

Lodge Foundation and its committees please contact me at

613-735-0175 ext 213 or [email protected]

Merry Christmas!

Miramichi Lodge December 2013

As an individual, Brian Wilson has and continues to make valuable contributions to the Renfrew County community. One of the key

social responsibilities Mr. Wilson has taken up is to enhance the lives of residents living in Miramichi Lodge LTC home, who come

from all reaches of Renfrew County. Brian was a founding member on the Miramichi Lodge Resident & Family Council as well as a

founding and current member on the Miramichi Lodge Foundation, But perhaps, the priceless value of his many contributions to sen-

iors are best summarized by his practice of bringing community events to the elderly who are unable to get to them. For example, dur-

ing EXPO 150, it was Brian's brainchild to coordinate a historical presentation of the County of Renfrew and invite retired CAO Norm

Lemke to talk about the logging days as well as ensure local entertainment was on hand, as most of our residents were too frail to attend

EXPO 150. Another example is his most recent endeavour - talking local fiddlers and step dancers into taking time out of their busy

"Fidldle Week" duties to perform for the residents of the Lodge. Dedication can be measured in many ways, but volunteering at mid-

night bingos to raise funds for the Miramichi Lodge Foundation has to be one of them; many late nights, not getting home from the

then-smoke filled bingo hall, necessitating a change of clothes before he was allowed into his house, is a good one. Another one is the

example Brian set by bringing his family to the Lodge on many Christmas Eves for a sing-a-long with residents who don't have any

visitors. Brian's daughter Erin then chose a career working with seniors, both at Miramichi Lodge and currently at Bonnechere

Manor. Brian hasn't restricted his dedication to seniors; he volunteers in coordinating the regional Silver Stick hockey tournament for

local kids, a qualifier for the International Silver Stick tournament. Brian is also a constant volunteer in his church community. Con-

gratulations Brian and thank you for your dedication to Miramichi Lodge

Residents - Phyllis Hampel Employee -

Pierrette Chaput-Sawyer

Volunteer - Dorothy Desjardienes

Phyllis Hampel nee Risto

was born in 1930. Her

family lived on what is

now called Zanders Rd.

She worked on the farm

with her father which is

where she met her future

husband Mel, who also

helped out there. The two were married in

November 1949. They purchased a lot in

Chapeau and built a cottage, where they

spent many happy times with family and

friends. The cottage remains there for fam-

ily to use today. Phyllis and Mel’s first

family home was on Miller Street in Pem-

broke below the hill from St. John’s Lu-

theran Church and then a farm house across

from the homestead. In 1963, the family

moved back into Pembroke to live on Leach

Street. They did a lot of snowmobiling and

spent time at the hunt camps. Phyllis and

Mel had 5 children: Terry, Grant, Roger,

Blake, and Tracy. Sadly their son Roger

passed away in 1983 as a result of an acci-

dent. Phyllis has seven grandchildren.

Many people will know Phyllis as she

worked downtown at the A&P for many

years and the store’s mall location where

she retired.

Phyllis has many talents and skills such as:

cake decorating, making and selling crafts,

making macramé cord lawn chairs, paper

toll pictures, crocheted snowflakes and an-

gels, knitted sweaters and afghans. Phyllis

loved to cook, and play cards with family

and friends. She was a Meals-On-Wheels

volunteer here at Miramichi Lodge until

2010. Phyllis also volunteered for the Can-

cer Society. Phyllis has had a love for mu-

sic from the time she was a young girl, her

father played the accordion, to when she

was older, and her friends had a small band.

She loved to camp at Fiddlepark and other

popular jamborees. She was involved with

various church groups by assisting as a

Sunday school teacher, Ladies Aid, and an

election day helper. Pets were always im-

portant to Phyllis and she had numerous

dogs throughout her life. She had a pet cat

after Mel passed away in 2001. Phyllis has

always tried to remain positive and has a

very kind, gentle, soft-spoken and helpful

manner about her. She was active all of her

life and not a person who would sit around

idle.

Phyllis was fortunate to have many family

and friends around her all of her life and

rarely spent any time alone. Phyllis moved

to the Pinewood in 2010 and came here to

our Home in 2011.

Pierrette was born and

raised in Pembroke in a

francophone family.

After completing high

school in English, as

there was no French high

school at that time, Pier-

rette worked for a few

years before deciding to

return to school to complete the two-year

Developmental Services program at Algon-

quin College in Ottawa. Following gradua-

tion, Pierrette was hired to work at the

Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls,

initially as a counselor, and then was later

promoted to assistant supervisor. She re-

turned to the Pembroke area nine years

later, working for the Community Living

Association. Pierrette once again decided

to return to college and enrolled in the

Health Care Aide program. After graduat-

ing in 1988, Pierrette was hired at

Miramichi Lodge. Twenty-five years later,

Pierrette says she has enjoyed working at

the Home, including her more recent posi-

tion as a Housekeeping Aide where she still

appreciates the interaction she can have

with the residents and their families.

Pierrette met her husband Alain in 1991 and

they are blessed with two wonderful daugh-

ters - Arianne who is in her second year of

a French zoology program at Laurentian

University; and Karynne who is in grade 9

at Jeanne Lajoie high school.

In her spare time Pierrette enjoys playing

volleyball with family and friends, and trav-

elling. Pierrette shares that both her parents

were residents at Miramichi Lodge, where

she states they received excellent care. Pi-

errette advises that the staff at the Home are

very compassionate and caring and this is

why she keeps telling her co-workers that

she is going to work here until she is 75!

Pierrette is one of those many employees

who consistently displays care and concern

for the residents every day. Thank you for

your hard work and dedication Pierrette!

Dorothy was born Mary

Dorothy Neville in

Douglas, the oldest of

five children. Dorothy

was close to her many

aunts and uncles who

influenced her life, but

particularly to the

O’Neill’s, who she lived

with during her school years. She attended

St. Michael’s school in Douglas and later,

the St. Joseph’s Academy in Renfrew. In

1953, Dorothy moved to Pembroke to enter

the Lorrain School of Nursing, graduating

in 1956 as a Registered Nurse and was hired

by the Pembroke General Hospital.

Dorothy married her husband Ernest Des-

jardin in 1960 and they were blessed with

four children – Mary Anne, Michael, Marc

and Matthew. Dorothy proudly advises that

her family has now grown to include nine

grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sadly, Dorothy lost her husband in 1997

after a three-month battle with cancer; a

period in her life that she describes as very

difficult.

Dorothy’s career at the Hospital included

bed-side nursing, supervision and staff edu-

cation, until her retirement in 1993. Unfor-

tunately, Dorothy was diagnosed with can-

cer in 1995, but is now a breast cancer sur-

vivor.

In 997 Dorothy was asked by her parish

priest to participate in the parish’s pastoral

visitor program. Fortunately for Miramichi

Lodge, Dorothy also agreed to devote her

time and energy to assist our residents in

meeting their spiritual needs through our

Home pastoral care program. Dorothy says

that her volunteerism with the Lodge’s pro-

gram has been a blessing for her, “by being

present to the residents, to offer encourage-

ment and praise, to share in their joys, their

stories, their faith is a privilege. Thank you

Dorothy, as it is our privilege that we can

count on you as one of our many dedicated

volunteers!
