Grateful, Thankful and Blessed…For donors like YOU Greetings,
As the leaves begin to fall and the season begins to change, we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for, including you, our friend and donor.
As a dear friend of the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers and the patients it serves, the generous support you give us helps cancer patients every day.
Because of you, our cancer experts are able to deliver personalized treatment plans, unique to each patient, and for that, we are forever grateful.
Because of you, our cancer centers are able to offer these services locally, right here in our area, without the need for burdensome travel.
And because of you, we are able to advance our mission to reveal and embody Christ’s healing love for all people.
In this issue, you’ll find stories of real people who’ve experienced our cancer centers – people like John, Mayme, Tavia, and Greg, who you’ve helped through your support.
We are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of people like you who answer the call to give.
But as you know, there are many more people in our community who need your help.
Together, with your partnership, we can continue our mission, and we can continue to help those in need here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Warmest regards,
Sally Luehring, MSL Executive Director, Cancer Services & Clinical Research HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers

Thank you for helping
people like John.
And the race is on…Your support helps people like John continue to run.John Cumicek works out nearly every day. He swims. He runs. He’s also always been diligent about his health and attends all of his medical appointments.
With his focus on health, John was surprised when he received a warning signal concerning his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.
“My urologist prescribed medication to bring my PSA down. We took another test. But the number was still high, so she took a biopsy. A few days later, my doctor called and told me I had prostate cancer.”
That’s when John was referred to HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers where he began his cancer treatment plan.
“I tried to stay positive. My initial thought was, ‘Let’s get it over with, so I can run the Bellin Run,’” remembers John.
John is one of 20 people who are known as “Bellin Legends.” These individuals have participated in every Bellin Run since it began. John wanted to run in the 2016 race to maintain his status.
“I started radiation and completed the 40th Bellin Run without any ill effect,” said John.
Thank you for helping people like John.
Today, John is finished with treatment and continues to be a loyal, healthy runner.

Early Detection Saves Lives! The story of young mother, Mayme DaoustWhile breastfeeding her newborn son, Mayme Daoust, a young mother of four, discovered a lump in her breast.
“I had to pump all of my son’s milk, and I was just about done pumping his meals and found a lump that I thought was a blocked milk duct,” recalls Mayme.
Eight months later, convinced it was nothing more than a blocked milk duct, tests of the lump revealed Stage II breast cancer that would require surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
“You don’t ever think it’s going to be you,” said Mayme. “I was just 32 years old with no family history of breast cancer. It was a total shocker.”
Mayme was referred to HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers and found comfort in how well-coordinated and organized her care was.
Mayme’s care team provided her options to personalize her care. She could do chemotherapy first, and then surgery, followed by radiation; or, Mayme could do the surgery first, followed by chemotherapy, and end with radiation. Each step had to occur to save her life, but it was a matter of personal preference to the order of which the procedures were done.
“They involved me in the planning of my treatment and made sure each step was okay with me and was what my body needed most,” said Mayme.
When good people support HSHS and its cancer centers, they support people like Mayme. Life-saving equip-ment, services, and specialized care are all supported by charitable donations.
Family-centered care adds valueThank you HSHS for caring for my husband, too!In March 2009, feeling tired and uncomfortable, Tavia Hopfensperger made an appointment with a physician, convinced her ailments were caused by a case of low iron levels. However, tests revealed Tavia was suffering from Stage III ovarian cancer.
Tavia’s physician in the Fox Valley referred her to the area’s only gynecologic oncologist at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers in Green Bay.
With her husband, Rob, at her side, Tavia underwent surgery and a particularly aggressive round of chemotherapy. She maintained a steady focus on regaining her health, but also on making sure Rob received the support he needed.
“The cancer center did that for him ten-fold,” Tavia said. “I remember one of the specialists talking with us about my treatments and what they would entail. The specialist looked right at my husband, and said comfortingly, ‘I know it sounds really bad, but it’s not as bad as it sounds.’”
Today, Tavia remains cancer-free.
“I’m actually in the best shape of my life.”
Tavia remains forever grateful to her oncologist and his team at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers.

Relying on trustFive years later, Greg is cancer freeIn fall 2012, Greg Stodola and his wife, Millaine, were newlyweds starting a new journey together. They were settling in to their family farm where Greg played a prominent role as a dairy and custom farmer.
It was just before their first Christmas together that Greg noticed a lump on his neck. While he didn’t think much about it, his wife gave him the extra push to get it looked at.
“I went to get it looked at and they did a biopsy,” Greg said. “I remember getting the phone call with the results. The lump on my neck had tested positive for Hodgkin lymphoma.”
This led Greg to HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers where he began chemotherapy followed by radiation.
“I didn’t need to research it a lot because I trusted my doctor,” said Greg. “He actually grew up on a farm, so he really understood what I needed to get done while going through treatment.”
Today, five years later, Greg is cancer-free and continues yearly visits to the hospital. In 2016, Greg and Millaine experienced the greatest joy of all, the birth of their son, Abraham.
Your gift to our cancer centers impacts
families like the Stodola’s every day.
Thank you.
