The MIplace Partnership Initiative
The goal of The MIplace Partnership Initiative is to create more jobs, attract and retain talented workers, and raise incomes at least in part, through targeted local and regional Placemaking activities; thereby restoring prosperity in Michigan.
Governor Snyder has championed the cause.

WHERE? Within Each Region there must be Some High Quality Urban Places • These could be called Regional Centers of Commerce
and Culture. – They should be the talent magnets
– They should be the major job and population centers
– They should have places with the highest density and the highest level of public services
– The largest ones should include not only a central city, but in most cases, portions of some adjoining suburban townships
• In addition, there would also be sub-regional centers (small towns) that are linked to the regional center

Urbanized Areas & Urban Clusters Density is 1,000 persons/sq. mile in the core and at least 500 persons/sq. mile in contiguous areas

What & Where to Target?
• What: Strategic Placemaking: for the talent attraction, retention and economic development benefits
• Where: Centers, and Nodes along key Corridors in these walkable communities
• Examples from HUD Sustainable Communities Grant Recipients:
– Grand Rapids, Lansing, Traverse City, Detroit, Washtenaw County, Flint (& Marquette)

PlacePlans & New Master Plans • MML coordinating
– MSU & private consultants
– 4 first year, now 8, next year more
– Mix of PM projects; shifting to only Strategic PM
– Emphasis on projects that can move quickly from planning to action
– Ex. Allegan Riverfront plan
• City voters quickly adopted millage to begin plan implementation
• New Plans: GR, Lansing, Flint, Detroit, Kazoo

Regional Prosperity Plans
• Great opportunity to get top local Strategic Placemaking priorities into the new Regional Prosperity Plans
