“Objects are not as large as they appear. Psalm 13”

To the natural eye objects may appear to be large. Until light is shed on the objects the right way, they are not as large as they appear.

Psalm 13:3-lighten my eyes As we look around our world from our natural view we see things that seem to be big problems, wars and rumors of war, sense-less violence and violent protest, lawlessness, diseases spreading, shortages of food and water here at home and across the world, religious militants persecuting Christians. Homes seem to be facing big problems through biblical family standards being under attack, sodomism rising, divorce rising, family structure being corrupted, ourChurchesseemtobefacingbigproblems-infiltrationofworldlystandards, declining attendance , declining giving, lack of laborers, disinterest in spiritual things, all this being said, these things are not as large as they seem when we view them through the light of God ‘s word. These things serve to draw our attention to the light of God ‘s Word..God’s word lightens our eyes, it is the light that when dis-played through The Lord ‘s churches, lightens the world and helps us to see circumstances around us clearly. Looking at our situation, through the light ... Romans 8:28 Through the light of the word of God we are assured that all things work together for good to those who love God and the called according to his purpose(Romans 8:28) they are small because to those who hold to the faith once delivered to the saints...know that Godusesdifficultcircumstancestoproducegoodinourlives. With God all things are possible- Mark 10:27, Luke 18:27 The objects that seem insurmountable or unable to be salvaged by man are not too hard for God to handle . 1John 4:4 Greater is He that is in you.

Page 13: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 13

Through the word of God we are informed to be of good cheer...that we are not to be overcome by the world for Jesus has overcome the world and greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. The light of God’s word uncovers the fact that we are more than conquerors, through him that loves us. Romans 8:37 We gain a surpassing victory. ThelightofGod’swordgivesconfidencethatwhenhebeginsa work or a work in you , He will perform it until the day of Christ. Philippians 1:6- God leaves no work undone. 1Cor.10:13 God is faithful- he knows the testing, trials and tribulations we face and will face, however He is faithful, he will not allow you to be tested above what you are able and will make away to escape that you will be able to bear it. 2Cor. 4:1-10- because of the light given to us by Jesus Christ, situations that loom large to the natural eye diminish in size in the light of His Glory. Aswe continue to infiltrate farther into the depths of thedarkness in this world to assist our savior in rescuing and recovering those who are blinded by the delusion and deception of Satan, may God help us to look through God’s light-view our assignment through the light of his word Walk while ye have the light -John 12:25 1John 1:7- Lest darkness come upon you. You become over-whelmed and consumed by the darkness around you. Believe in the light- John 12:36. When you believe in the light, you come to be light, you grow, you are energized , you are made to finish.

Missionary Sermonby

Pastor Juan Santoyo

ARE YOU READY TO MEET GOD’S CALLMissionary Message for Southern California Local Association 2014

Matthew 28:18-20

INTRODUCTION: It is a privilege to be here this evening to share God’s desire for us, and to start I will tell you something I read somewhere and that perhaps you already know it, is the story of a preacher that happened at the beginning of the last century. In 1904 he arrived by boat to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Thomas Davis and his wife, they then found out how they could travel to the interior of the country. The Lord lead them to the city of Ambato. They obtained accommodation and began to spread the good news of salvation. There wasn’t any work established, no brother or something like that who sympathise with their convictions. They trusted the Lord and began the work of evangelizing with great effort and struggle with prejudice and the persecution of the State religion (Catholic). After a short time his wife became seriously ill and died within a few days. Thomas Davis not only saw his beloved wife die, but because of the prevailing prejudice he was not allowed to bury her in the local cemetery because it was reserved only for Catholics. So in that silent night, Thomas Davis loads on shoulders his wife’s body wrapped in a sheet and carrying a shovel that would serve to bury his wife, embarked into a not very distant Valley to bury his wife in a place that is known only to God and his angels. Here, Thomas Davis was grave digger, mourner, and pastor officiating. It was not easy, but this was the beginning of the work at that location. Now comes the question of rigour, what moves people like you or like me to leave a life made in this country and everything it has, and travel thousands of miles away, to sleep on the floor, face the inclemencies of the time, the animals, diseases (malaria), scarcity of resources, hard work, and still be happy?

I. FIRST WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE ORDER GIVEN BY OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST IN MATTHEW 28:18-20

A. We have a responsibility to carry the message that is entrusted to us. 1. All Nations, all people, ethnic groups, languages around the

world, 2. Our Lord Jesus Christ had defined the Church’s missionary giving

work, the theological content, as well as the geographic dimension: the disciples who throughout history have been called to implement His redeeming plan.

Page 15: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 15

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 3. Then missionary work spread throughout Europe, Asia (in the

plan of God missionaries arrived many years ago with a message to this country, you already know the story of the missions in the United States)

4. The United States plays an important role, and within every good thing that this country has exported to the world is the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

B. Each company has a reason to exist, and a mission that it seeks to fulfill.

1. It is the case of the Corporation “McDonald’s” established as franchise in 1955 seeks to sell their product to each person at your fingertips, and to get an idea, listen to this,

2. It is present in 119 countries, more than 68 million people eat every day at these restaurants and that represents 1 percent of the population only in this country. McDonald’s sold 500,000 tons of meat. 88 per cent of the world population can identify the Golden “M” of McDonald’s, and in the next two years, McDonald’s will open a restaurant daily in China that will generate more than 25 million dollars a year. If this company has achieved such market penetration so soon why has the Church of Christ not succeeded in evangelizing the world?

C. It seems that we have not taken seriously, or done enough with the mandate of our Lord and the evangelization Commission.

1. You could name several reasons for this failure or excuses, but we have to recognize, that the churches have not been willing to sacrifice to achieve this goal.

` 2. We are ready to lay down a few coins to our mission, but we are not prepared to give sacrificially.

` 3. We are willing to hear inspiring stories of the missionaries, but we are not willing to study in depth the history of missions.

4. We are willing to pray for missionaries that go to other countries, but we are not willing to see if the Lord will call us

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

II. TAKE THE LOST SOULS TO THE FEET OF CHRIST (MAKE DISCIPLES)

A. We do so with the authority that Christ gives to his Church 1. The word of God is emphatic in stating this as we see in verse

18. 2. Rather than abandon humanity in their sin, God has used

Page 16: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 16

men and women who, throughout history, have been called to implement humanly the redeeming plan of God.

B. We can only obey that order which is imperative for each of us. 1. Each of God’s calls have specific conditions, but all of them

demand a full and sincere obedience. C. We must take advantage of every opportunity that we have to do it

and tell you the plan of salvation which God has for each creature in the world and be saved from eternal damnation, Romans 10:13-14.

1. But someone has to do this work, verses: 14, 15

III. CHRIST HAS SHOWN US THAT THE WILL BE WITH US IN THIS MISSION, “I WILL BE WITH YOU EVERY DAY UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD.”

A. At the end of this passage we have read, we find these encouraging words for us missionaries in the field.

1. Many believers have taken these words as a personal confidence amid promise of travails, however note that the context of the promise, is the divine “go.”

B. Jesus promises to be with us in the fulfillment of the task which he has given us, which is to “bring the message of salvation to the Nations.”

1. This must be our first motivation to put all the heart to missionary work.

2. Knowing that if God has called us, He will support his work at all times, Hebrews, 13 :5 says that God keeps his promise as in the beginning.

3. Are your habits without greed, happy with what you have now; because he said: I will not forsake you nor leave you.

CONCLUSION: If we are to unite ourselves to the divine mission, we have to recognize that we belong to Christ. The only decision that is ours is to determine how you want to use your gifts and talents and resources to extend his Kingdom. Perhaps God is calling you to devote yourself to missions. Don’t miss the opportunity to respond to that call, since there is shortage of pastors and especially missionaries. God also calls us to support in prayer those who serve. Finally, see that there are many people around you who have never understood what the death and the resurrection of Christ means, share with them your faith, seek the opportunity to preach the message wherever you are, and join the largest-ever mission in history.

Annual SermonBy Brother Eric Brown

“The Certainty of our Hope” I Corinthians 15:1-20

It is an honor once again to be able to share God’s word with you. A little over a month before he died, the famous atheist Jean-Paul Sartre declared that he so strongly resisted feelings of despair that he would say to himself, “I know I shall die in hope.” But then in profound sadness, he would add, “But hope needs a foundation.”

As God’s people we have hope! I love to preach and teach that we have a hope that goes beyond the brokenness of this world. And Sartre is right. Hope needs a foundation. There must be a foundation that we have to claim we have hope. And the reality is we do have a foundation for our hope! The empty tomb provides the basis for our hope.

An empty tomb tells me that what Jesus said He would do, he did. It tells me that the reason why Jesus came to this earth, to take on my sin was accepted by the Father. But my declaring it almost 2,000 years removed does not make it true. There must be some reason why I believe this event of the resurrection to be true and thus being the foundation of my hope. There must be some basis to believe the tomb is empty.

A young American engineer was sent to Ireland by his company to work in a new electronics plant. It was a two-year assignment that he had accepted because it would enable him to earn enough to marry his long-time girlfriend. She had a job near her home in Tennessee, and their plan was to pool their resources and put a down payment on a house when he returned. They corresponded often, but as the lonely weeks went by, she began expressing doubts that he was being true to her, exposed as he was to comely Irish lasses.

The young engineer wrote back, declaring with some passion that he was paying absolutely no attention to the local girls. “I admit,” he wrote, “that sometimes I’m tempted. But I fight it. I’m keeping myself for you.”

In the next mail, the engineer received a package. It contained a note from his girl and a harmonica. “I’m sending this to you,” she wrote, “so you can learn to play it and have something to take your mind off those girls.”

Page 19: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 19

The engineer replied, “Thanks for the harmonica. I’m practicing on it every night and thinking of you.”

At the end of his two-year stint, the engineer was transferred back to company headquarters. He took the first plane to Tennessee to be reunited with his girl. Her whole family was with her, but as he rushed forward to embrace her, she held up a restraining hand and said sternly, “Just hold on there a minute, Billy Bob. Before any serious kissin’ and huggin’ gets started here, let me hear you play that harmonica!”

Evidence is sometimes needful. And we have good reason to believe in the resurrection of Jesus. As we will see, it is reasonable to believe that there is an empty tomb in Jerusalem. Please turn in your Bibles to 1 Cor. 15. 1

In our passage this morning, the Apostle Paul is writing a church located in Corinth that was having a lot of internal problems One of the problems that Paul addresses in this letter is that there were some who were saying that there was no resurrection of the dead. We know this from verse 12 where Paul asks how some of them can say there is no resurrection of the dead. Certainly this was an issue.

Nothing new though. We know at Mars Hill in Athens, when Paul preached the resurrection of the dead, some mocked him. And today, many scoff at the thought of resurrection. Some 2,000 years later and still many reject any kind of thought of a supernatural event like a resurrection.

So Paul, under the inspiration of God, shows this church why there is certainty in the resurrection of the dead. This confidence they should have is rooted in the certainty of the resurrection of Jesus. And this certainty provides the basis of their hope and our hope.

In our text for this morning, Paul will provide evidence for the assurance of the resurrection of Christ. This morning I would like to consider four evidences that Paul provides for the certainty of the gospel message, in particular the resurrection. Then as an application, we will consider the necessity of the resurrection. It is my prayer that today we will leave here rejoicing because of the certainty of our hope.

The Evidence from the Scriptures (vv. 1-4)

Paul begins by reminding these believers that this “good news” he is going to present is the same message he told them before. This was the starting point. It is the same message that they believed in and the same which they stood on. In verse 2, those who did not really believe are those who believed in vain.

Page 20: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 20

What is this gospel message? If you would like a clear definition of the message of Christian faith, here it is. Paul defines it for us in verses 3-4. First is that Christ died for our sins. Then he was buried and on the third day He arose. This is the gospel message.

What I would like for us to notice is that Paul states that the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ are “according to Scriptures” These events did not just happen. It was not some cosmic fate. It was part of the predetermined plan of God. Peter declares in his sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:22-23). This was God’s plan from the beginning! Right from the beginning, in the midst of God laying out the consequences because of the disobedience of Adam, He gives this promise of one to come in Genesis 3:15. Adam and Eve believed Satan over God. Satan may have well thought at this point, “I have their devotion. The mother of all living is on my side. I have a third of the angels, I have the humans. I am sovereign. I am god.”

But God, not Satan, is sovereign. And God tells Satan, not so fast. I will put enmity or conflict between you and the woman. At this point, there was conflict, but it was between Adam and Eve and God. But God is going to change that. The promise here is that the woman who was the enemy of God will become the enemy of Satan. This problem will be fixed. God says there will be a “He” that will ultimately defeat Satan. There was one to come from the seed of the woman that will crush Satan. And throughout the Old Testament, we see verses pointing to the coming Messiah to resolve man’s problem of sin and ultimately defeat Satan.

As we observe these verses speaking of the coming Messiah, to fix our problem with sin, this Messiah to come would have to take our penalty. The Old Testament taught this One to come, would die, and be buried, and come back to life. Verses such as found in Isaiah 53: 4-9 or Ps. 22 which was quoted from the cross speaking of His death. Also there is Psalm 16 which spoke of His resurrection. This was God’s plan revealed through the Old Testament.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus foretold about His pending death and resurrection. Peter, feeling his oats, states no way Lord. Kind of the “not on my watch” mentality. Jesus rebuked him referring to him as Satan- why would Jesus say that? Because Peter would be standing in the way of God’s predetermined plan (Matt. 16: 21-23).After His resurrection, Jesus was with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Not recognizing Jesus, they told of the events of that week, and they said they hoped that Jesus was the Christ (Luke 24: 19-27). Later, after they recognized Jesus, they said how their hearts burned when Jesus spoke the Word to them (v. 32). Then when appearing to the disciples, Jesus again states the Scriptures foretold these events (Luke 24: 44-48). Many other verses could be used to show how the Scriptures testified to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

Page 21

Certainly these events cannot be an accident. This is part of God’s plan, foreordained by a sovereign God. Paul says the fact these verses are a fulfillment of prophecy provides evidence of its certainty. Let’s look at a second reason for our certainty. There are eyewitnesses to his resurrection. There are people who saw with their own eyes the resurrected Jesus. Let’s read verses 5-7.

The Evidence from Eyewitnesses (vv. 5-7)Paul gives a list of those who have seen the resurrected Christ. We will not

take time to look at these appearances that are recorded in Scripture, however a couple thoughts to consider.

First, when we look at the accounts concerning the appearances of Jesus after the resurrection, they are not described as appearance from a disembodied spirit but they depict an actual appearance of Jesus in His resurrected body. A body that took up space, and could be seen, heard and touched.

Secondly, this is probably not what they would have expected. The prevailing Jewish thought of the day would have been that the resurrection would have occurred at the end of time, not in history and it would have been a general revelation not individual. So given this, the disciples would not have declared this teaching of resurrection based off of the ideas of the day.

Third, the fact that He was seen by more than five hundred people at the same time rules out any kind of hallucination. Add to this Paul wrote this at Ephesus around AD 55, only 35 years after the appearances of Christ, gives credibility to his statement that there are those who saw the resurrected Jesus and were0 still living. If you don’t believe me, ask …

So why would I discount this eyewitness testimony. Why should anyone discredit this testimony? One might say, well these people were Jesus’ followers. They had an invested interest. Paul will answer that allegation by the next two witnesses which will show the evidence from a changed life. Let’s read verses 7-10.

The Evidence from a Changed Life (vv. 7-10)Some people will change when they see the light. Others change only

when they feel the heat. In this case both examples had seen The Light. The first witness that had a change of heart was James. Since James was listed apart from the apostles, this seems to be referring to Jesus half brother, who was a skeptic and unbeliever. It is concluded that with the witnessing of the resurrection, that he believed. Now that is a credible eyewitness…from unbeliever to believer.

The second eyewitness is Paul himself. We see the humility in Paul as he states that he was the least of the apostles, and that he did not deserve to be an apostle. Why did he feel this way? Because he persecuted the church. I’m sure Paul was confident in knowing that his sins were forgiven. However, Paul realized what he had done, the damage he had done, and that is why he would say that it is by the grace of God that he is who he is. It is true with all of us who are believers. We do not deserve what God has graciously given. The grace of God has made a radical change in his life. Hard for me to believe that

Page 22

one who hated the church as much as He did, who with his religious zeal went to persecute the church as heretics, would make such a tremendous change in the opposite direction without some kind of reason, some life changing event. But there was an event that changed him. That event was an encounter with the resurrected Jesus. True saving faith will change your life

Let’s consider one final evidence Paul presents. The evidence of the message from the church. This is the message the church has been preaching from the beginning. Let’s read verse 11.

The Evidence from the Message of the Church (v.11)This has been the message of the church since the beginning. How could

Peter, 50 days following the resurrection, preach about an empty tomb if there was a body in that tomb? Why would these scared disciples become so bold in their preaching of what they have claimed to have been an eyewitness for? Why would they be willing to die for it? They knew Jesus actually died. The Roman guards confirmed it. The Romans guards would have known what death looks like. He did not swoon or faint and suddenly revive. Even if that was the case, he would have to move a huge rock and take out a few guards. And the disciples knew exactly where the tomb was. It was Joseph of Arimathea. They did not run to the wrong tomb on that first Easter Sunday. There is absolutely no reason why I would discount any of the evidence we have for an empty tomb, evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, and proof for our hope.

The reality is that without an empty tomb, without the resurrection, we would not have Christianity today. This is what Paul will now argue. Resurrection of the dead is a necessity for our hope. Without it, we are a people most miserable. Let’s read verses 12-18.

The Necessity of the Resurrection for Our Hope (vv. 12-18)The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation for our hope. But what if

we are wrong? What if the resurrection did not occur? After presenting the evidence to the church at Corinth about the certainty of the resurrection, Paul asks the question “how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead?” So to prove the consequence of their assertion, Paul grants them their argument that there is no resurrection. He then proceeds to give an “if this, then this” defense.

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then here are the results: Christ has not been raised, our preaching is vain and so is your faith, and we are false witnesses. So the first consequence is my hope of being right with God is gone. Paul states that without the resurrection your faith is vain you are still in your sins. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, our faith in Him is worthless. We are just like unbelievers.

The question is why? Why is it that without the resurrection of Jesus, we are still in our sins? To answer the why takes us back to the Garden of Eden. God created man in His image. God tells Adam that he can eat of any tree in the garden except one. On the day he eats of it, he will die. Enter Satan. Satan deceives Eve and she eats of the tree and gives the fruit to Adam, who willfully ate. Adam disobeys God. He sins and he dies spiritually.

Romans 5:12 gives the tragic consequences of this act of disobedience.

Page 23: MINUTES OF THE FIFTY-NINETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE€¦ · Seating of messengers. 2. Reception of new churches. 3. Miscellaneous business. 4. Inviting brethren of like faith to sit

Page 23

Adam plunges mankind into sin. We are born with an inward propensity to sin because of our sinful nature. We are spiritually dead and apart from God. We stand under the condemnation of sin and there is nothing we can do to change it. So how does God remedy the problem that we have? He sends His Son. 2 Corinthians 5:21 shows Jesus took the wrath of our sin on the cross

So when I understood that I stood guilty before God, that I deserved the punishment for my sin. When I realized that there was nothing in my power that I could do to remedy the situation, the only thing I could do was to cry out to God to forgive me, and to place my faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It is at that point, I was saved, my sins are forgiven, I am at peace with God and I have hope (Rom. 5:1-2).

The resurrection shows in effect that God the Father had approved of Christ’s work of suffering and dying for our sins, that His work was complete, and there was no longer any need for Him to be dead. No penalty left to pay, no more wrath, it was finished.

The second consequence for their assertion that there is no resurrection of the dead is the conclusion that there is no hope after death. Paul also states that without the resurrection of Jesus, those who died in Christ have perished. Done! However, the resurrection insures that we will receive a perfect resurrected body (1 Cor. 6:14). Not only do I have hope of eternal life, but I also have the hope that I will see my friends and loved ones who also are in Christ.

And finally Paul ends with the statement, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.” If there is no resurrection of the dead, if Christ did not raise, then there is no hope, period. But Paul emphatically states in verse 20, “But now Christ has been raised from the dead!” Because of the resurrection, there is hope! With this hope is the certainty that my sins are forgiven, that there is a home awaiting for me, that I will see those of my family and friends who placed their faith in Christ again. There is hope!

The question this morning is do you have hope? What is your hope rooted in? Is it in being a good person? In some religious act that you do? Or is it rooted in the person and the work of Jesus Christ?

William Sangster, the great Methodist leader who helped guide Londoners through the horrors of the World War II bombings, fell ill to a disease that progressively paralyzed his body, and eventually his vocal cords. On the Easter just before he died, he managed to scribble this short note to his daughter: How terrible to wake up on Easter and have no voice to shout, “He is Risen!” Far worse, to have a voice and not want to shout.1

It is my prayer this morning that your heart is so full of joy and hope that you cannot help but shout. Let’s pray.

We believe Jesus Christ established His church, the Body of Christ, during His ministry on earth and that it is only always a local, visible assembly of scripturally baptised believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ, and each church is an independent, self-governing body, and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it. We believe that Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission and the keeping of the integrity of the two ordinances to His New Testament churches only.

We believe that all cooperating bodies are and properly should be the servants of the churches.

We believe that the Scriptures teach that there has been a suc-cession of true churches adhering to the doctrines and practices of the New Testament from the time of Christ to this day, and that thechurchesofthisAssociationaresoidentified.

We believe that baptism, to be valid, must be administered by a scriptural Baptist church.

We believe that the Lord's Supper is to be administered within the membership of the local New Testament church as a memorial of the Lord's death until He comes again. I Corinthians 11:26

We believe that at the completion of the Bible, God's written Word, that all miraculous gifts such as miracles, healings, tongues, knowledge and prophecy had served their function in God's plan and they were done away.
