TRADITION IN TRANSITION: Minot State is in its third season of a four-year transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. MSU advanced to Year Three Provisional status in July and is expected to complete the transition in July 2012. Minot State was selected to join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13.

RECORDS: Minot State and UND are both 0-0 on the season. MSU is coming off a 13-17 season, while UND was 19-15 last year.

COACHES CORNER: Minot State’s head coach is Peter Stewart, who begins his second season with the Beavers. Stewart is 13-17 overall. Brian Jones is in his sixth season with the Sioux and is 69-82 overall.

FOLLOW THE BEAVERS: The game is broadcast locally on KCJB 910-AM with Scott Kittell calling the play-by-play. Live audio can be accessed online at (www.kcjb.com). The game is also being televised throughout the region on Midco Sports Network.

RANKINGS: Neither team was ranked in the top 25 in any of their respective preseason polls.

RECENT HISTORY: This will be the exhibition opener for both teams.

OVERALL SERIES: The Sioux lead the series with Minot State 17-4, although most of the games have been noncounters for the Beavers as NAIA rules allowed for teams to schedule exhibition games throughout the year. The series dates back to 1937.

NOTING THE SIOUX: The University of North Dakota is coming off a solid 2010-11 season that saw the Sioux advance to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament… The Sioux return all five starters as well as three of four top reserves… Troy Huff leads the Sioux scoring at 13.3 points per game, while Patrick Mitchell also averaged double figures last year with a 10.7 scoring average. Josh Schuler, Jamal Webb and Aaron Anderson all averaged better than 7.5 points per game… UND was great at home, average on the road last season as they compiled an 11-3 record at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Sioux were just 4-11 on the road and 8-12 overall away from Grand Forks. All time, UND is 886-255 at home. UND will move from the Great West Conference to the Big Sky Conference next season and is in Year 4 of its transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA DI.

THE TROUBLE WITH TRANSITION: Minot State will make its one and only home appearance in 2011 as the Beavers will travel much of the first half of the season. Scheduling this season has been tough on all the programs as most of the Beavers ath-letic teams have traveled to find games. The MSU men’s basketball team only plays twice in the state of North Dakota in 2011, against UND and an away game at the University of Mary Nov. 22. MSU plays in seven tournaments this season.

THE TROUBLE WITH TRANSITION PART TWO: Minot State will redshirt its top returning scorer Anthony Enriquez (Sr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) and its top rebounder and shot blocker, Kelvin Fraser (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) during the transition pe-riod. After redshirting two of its top prospects, Yonas Behre (Jr., G, Toronto, Ontario) and Josh Johnson (Jr., F, Lufkin, Texas) last year, MSU hopes to have an experienced group heading into its first season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Confer-ence next season.

THE ONUS IS ON JONAS: MSU senior guard Jonas Pollard (Mesa, Ariz.) is one of only two returners that will see action this season as noted above the Beavers plan to redshirt most of its returners. Pollard averaged 7.4 points and 3.8 rebounds last season, while starting in 20 of the 30 games he appeared in. Pollard hit 45.7 percent of his shots last season and had 19 assists.

DOME COOKING: While the Beavers struggled at times last season, they were solid in the friendly confines of the MSU Dome. The Beavers went 7-4 at the Dome, winning three of four nonconference games. MSU averaged 74.6 points in home contests, including a 101 point outburst against Briercrest College. MSU is 2-4 all time at home against UND and defeated the Sioux in Minot 80-76 in 2001.

Peter Stewart was hired as the 14th head men’s basketball coach at Minot State University in 2010.

The Beavers finished in fifth place during Stewart’s first season in the Dakota Athletic Conference. MSU went 6-8 in DAC play and finished with a 13-16 record overall. MSU avenged two earlier losses to rival Dickinson State in the first round of the playoffs, blasting the Blue Hawks 75-57 in Dickinson, before falling to No. 1 seed Black Hills State in the semifnals.

The MSU skipper helped center Kelvin Fraser set the Beavers all-time shots blocked record in just one season, setting the single-season mark as well, with 80 rejectionsin 2010-11. MSU’s Jason West also recorded the Beavers’ first triple-double in more that a decade as the senior scored 16 points, had 10 steals and 10 rebounds at Dickinson State.

MSU also knocked off then No. 3 Black Hills State. The win was the highest ranked team Minot State has defeated in school history.

Stewart comes to Minot State after spending eight seasons at Penin-sula College in Port Angeles, Wash. He led his team to the North Di-vision Conference Championship three times. Stewart’s overall record at Peninsula College was 127-101 with an 82-46 mark in conference. Stewart was named the conference coach of the year twice, first in 2003-04 and the latest in 2007-08.

Stewart has coached at all levels of basketball, including stints at Dakota College at Bottineau (1987-88), Adams State (1992-93), Minot State (1993-94), the Malaysian Professional Basketball league (1995) and the Australian Professional Basketball League (1989-1996 as a player and coach). He coached his team to the 1995 Malaysian Basketball League Championship.

A 1989 graduate of the University of North Dakota, Stewart played four seasons for the Sioux, being named team captain and selected as the North Central Conference Academic Player of the Year.

Stewart, a native of Parshall, N.D., is married to Julie Ann Stewart, and they have three children.
