Minor Parties
Types of Ideological parties
Ideological Parties- Based on a particular
set of beliefs such as the Socialist party,
Communist Party of America, and the
Libertarian Party. Bill Pierce ran for Gov. of
Ohio this year.
Single Issue Party
Those concentrating on a single public
policy matter. Examples:
• Know Nothings- Opposed Irish Immigration in the 1850’s
• Right to Life Party- Opposed to abortion
• Prohibition Party- Prohibit consumption and distribution of alcohol.
Economic Protest Parties
• Greenback Party- Appealed to unhappy farmers in the late 1800’s.
• Populist Party- demanded public ownership of railroads, telephone service, and lower tariffs.
Splinter Parties
• Those which have split away from the two major political parties.
• Best example is the Bull Moose Party. Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican ex-President, took on William Howard Taft and let Wilson in the door.
Parties centered around one manReform Party- Began as a vehicle for Ross
Perot to seek the Presidency in 1996, he ran
as an independent in 1992. The same party
no longer exists in that form.
Jesse Ventura was their nominee for
Minnesota Governor in 1998.
What about Independents
• There is not an active, formal independent party.
• If you want to be registered as an independent in Ohio, you must say so at a Primary election and your ballot will not have any candidates on it, just issues.
• Those who are registered and do not show up to vote in a primary are registered as undeclared.
