THE NYERI NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC

The Nyeri National Polytechnic (NNP) is a public national training institution under the Ministry of Education, State Department of Vocational and Technical Training. NNP operated

as Nyeri Technical Training Institute (NTTI) until June 2016 when it was elevated to a National Polytechnic. It is mandated to offer a variety of courses at Degree level (in collaboration with Technical Universities), Higher Diploma, Diploma, Craft and Artisan levels as well as units of competency (Skill based short courses) as per the needs of the industry. The Polytechnic offers Competency Based Technical and Vocational Education and Training as well as Research and Innovation. It has become one of the highly placed institutions in science, technology and innovations.

The Polytechnic is committed to its dynamic Strategic plan with a vision of being a world class polytechnic for sustainable development. Its mission is to provide trainees with globally competitive education and training, research skills; and provision of consultancy services for sustainable development. The Institution’s motto is to Excel in Skills & Technology.

The Polytechnic has embraced the Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) and has positioned herself to offer trainee demand driven programs that the economy needs for growth and development and sustenance of post millennium development goals. The institution aims at equipping young people with skills and competencies which can help them fit in the job market demands.

The launch of CBET courses was necessitated by the need to train trainers and allow for the flexibility and responsiveness to the changing needs of the trends in the market. The CBET courses are structured to expose trainees to undertake structured and supervised practical activities in the industry environment. The courses are developed with labour market information.

All The Nyeri National Polytechnic trainees have been trained on CBET curriculum implementation by CDACC. Currently, the institution is offering three (3) CBET courses on a pilot basis.

These are:1. Mechanical Technology and Maintenance level 42. Welding Level 43. Instrumentation and Control.

In addition, we are also offering fifteen (15) CBET courses.In 2018, the Polytechnic received ultra- modern equipment for

training various courses in Building and Civil Engineering from AVIC International Holding Corporation. Technical Trainers in this area, drawn from various Technical Training Institutes across the country, are currently receiving 150 days training by AVIC International on how to operate and maintain the modern equipment at the Nyeri National Polytechnic.

During the official opening of the training on 13th June, 2019 by the Principal Secretary, State Department of Vocational and Technical Training, Ministry of Education, Dr. Kevit Desai emphasized the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in providing a practical avenue for youth to acquire employable skills. He was categorical that training youth adequately in specific fields makes them ready for the world of work. These skilled workers would fill skill gaps in various sectors of the economy.

He said that TVET clearly holds the key to the nation’s technological progress, rapid industrialization, wealth creation and poverty reduction which fit in well with the Big 4 Agenda.
