The Alpha and the Omega – Part 5: The Covenant

Once Adam and Eve had disobeyed God and fallen into original sin, God now had a fallen world with which to work. Adam and Eve were indeed fruitful, and they did multiply, Eve giving birth to Cain and Abel.

But the fallen world and original sin did not waste any time. In the fourth chapter of Genesis, in verse seven, God tells Cain that sin is waiting “at the door”, and by the next verse, the world had recorded its first murder.

From there, the story gets worse. The world came to be so steeped in sin that God decided to wash it all away in the Great Flood, sparing only Noah and his family, the only righteous people on earth. And even after that, humanity was corrupt and full of sin. Our ancestors tried to reach the heavens on their own strength and built the Tower of Babel. It failed.

It was God’s original plan and purpose for creation to have a family of His own. And so, God took the initiative and entered into a covenant with the people He had made. He promised to be their God, to bless them, to love them and give them good gifts. In return, they would be His people and would keep His commandments. But the people continued to fail and break the covenant.

God called Abraham to bring the people to the land of Canaan. When famine struck the land, the people went down to Egypt and settled there. God entered into a covenant with Abraham, promising that his descendants would one day inherit the land.

God revealed Himself to His people through His miraculous acts. When the people cried out to God to release them from Pharaoh, God sent the ten plagues to persuade Pharaoh to let the people go. Finally, God called Moses to lead the people to The Promised Land. God parted the Red Sea so that Moses and the people could pass through, but when Pharaoh’s army tried to pass through, God let the sea fall back on them.

God gave the Law and the Prophets to call His people to Himself. He gave the Law for our protection, to keep us from harm, especially to each other. God sent the prophets to call His people back to Himself, back to the covenant, when they had strayed from Him.

All along, God was preparing the world for the coming of His Son Jesus Christ. The Law and the Covenant are fulfilled in Him, through His atoning death on the cross. The Prophets foretold His coming of the Messiah.

From the Christian perspective, we can see a prophetic foretelling of God becoming man almost from the very beginning. In Genesis chapter three, we are told that Adam and Eve “heard the sound of the Lord God walking about in the garden at the breezy time of day”. God described in such anthropomorphic terms—walking in the garden—is a sign of incarnation.

As soon as humanity had fallen, God’s plan of redemption commenced and developed until Jesus Himself said, “It is finished”. God’s Covenant with His beloved children stands for all eternity.

To be continued . .

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. About the Holy Spirit, by Francisca Javiera del Valle, is a devotion for the first ten days before Pentecost. It was first published in Spanish in 1930 and written by a poor dressmaker who died in 1930. The author experienced constant mystical phenomena in her spiritual life; ecstasies, visions, mystical conversations and raptures. Her sorrow was that the Holy Spirit is not known by us or even to those who serve and are consecrated to Him. Have you thought lately about how much we ought to love the Holy Spirit because He is the motivator of our existence and the cause of our having been created to enjoy for eternity the same joys as God himself? This book is divided into 10 sections or days. Each day has the same Act of Contrition, Opening Prayer, Litany of the Holy Spirit, and Concluding prayer while the “Consideration” and “Offering” change from day to day. Come Holy and Divine Spirit! Come as light and enlighten us. Come as fire and set all hearts aflame that they burn with divine love. Come make all men know you that they may all know and love the One true God, for you are the only thing worth loving. Come as a tongue and teach us to praise God unceasingly. Come as a cloud and enfold us in all your protection and aid. Come as plentiful rain and quench in us all the fires of our passions. Come as the sun and as soft rays of light to warm us. God has three divine persons in him and all three have and possess the same wisdom, the same goodness, the same love, the same mercy, the same power and the same justice. “This God, thrice holy, is by nature the source of all happiness and joy, all blessedness and greatness, all power and glory. He alone is unique and without beginning. Come, O Holy and divine Spirit, come down to earth and enlighten the minds of all men. I assure you, O Lord, that with the clarity and beauty of your light, many minds will come to know, love, and serve you”. This book reviewed by Parishioner Deborah Harris
