Many people site Word Star as theCadillac of WPs. There's no doubt thatWord Star is good. But, in order to useit, you need a Z80 board, CP/M and lotsof money. If you buy all the mail-listand other support software, you couldend up spending nearly $1000! Thespecifications for Word Star with all ofthe supporting software are not a lotdifferent than those for Screenwriter orPie Writer.

REFERENCE

If any clubquantities willof all boardpicked up atmeetings.

The club put together and printed over10,000 copies of an Apple II referencecard containing some useful BASICoriented material including some 'Usefultricks', some of which had not beenpublished before in our newsletter.

The cards were handed out at the 'fest. We do not plan to mail them to membersas the envelope stuffing, labelling andstamping would take about 20person-hours <unless somebody willvolunteer to organize such anundertaking).

The errors in the ASCII table are:Column 2 and 3 headers should be HEXnot ASC.Decimal code 3 is an ETX not STXKey for Decimal code 29 is a CTRL SftMHEX codes for Decimal 58 thru 63 are3A thru 3F, not 4A thru 4F.Char for decimal 64 is @ not *.

Unfortunately, during the phototypesetting phase, due to the failure ofa communication link, it was necessaryto re-key in all of the material. Thiscaused a deadline problem which resultedin poor proofr~ading of the ASCIItable. Consequently there are severalerrors in that section and a fewelsewhere.

Under DOS RELATED THINGS at $9DBF, read3DOG, not 3DOOG

Under BEGINNERS, to Boot Disk is 6 CtrlP ( the P is missing>.

All of the above WPs are excellent, butall will not be suitable for you. Forexample, Word Handler is undoubtably theeasiest to use, but in so doing hasImposed certain restrictions whichprevent it being used effectively tomake full use of printers like the EpsonMX80 which have many features.

Whether or not you like a particular WPis a very subjective thing. People'sneeds vary. If you are thinking ofbuying a WP, I suggest that you readmore than one review on each. PeelingsII a month ago published an extensivecomparison of several WPs in whichP:i. ~ W..-:i. t~..- came out top andScreenwriter II was a close 2nd. In theMay Sof tal k, Z <3...- d c:Jo k , anAustralian written WP, was reviewed. InNi bbl e Vol 3, No 4, Wc:Jo..- dH<3. ....... d 1~..- received a glowingreview. Last year, Call Apple reviewedabout 8 WPs. At Applefest, the Englishauthor of Fc:Jo..- fn<3. t I I was presentdemonstrating his product. According toSoftalk, Screenwriter has beenconsistently the best seller of WPs.

Word Handler is in the class of WPs thattries to present the text on the screenas you see it on the paper. Xerox WPsfollow the same philosophy. Other WPsdo not attempt to format the screen likethe paper, but instead, provide printercontrol commands to allow maximumflexibility in use of the hard copyoutput device. Pie Writer andScreenwriter are in the laterclassification.

I use Pie Writer, which offers the a lotof flexibility for work like thenewsletter production. It alsointerfaces easily with standard textfiles and files produced by other WPs.But some people might find it difficultto work with under certaincircumstances. Screenwriter II issimilar to Pie Writer having beenmodelled on the same software as was PieWriter. It lacks some flexibility, butprovides the 70 character screen.Personal Secretary, in my opinion again,is a compromise between ease of use andmaximum flexibility. M<3.g:i. c:W:i. ....... d c:Jo"" offers yet anotherapproach. (See Mini'app'les OctoberNewsletter) And so it goes on.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

TIME:PLACE:

J: NVESTMENT S J: G/by Eric Holterman

Over the past several months I have beenat a loss to figure out why someone elsedidn"t start an Investment SIB. I havecome to the remarkable conclusion thatthe time would be better spent gettingone started, just like many others inour club have started other SIBS! Maybeits my turn to take the plunge.

It is up to those who join the SIB todecide what to cover. I am suggestingthat we hold an organizing meeting toget to know each other, select a meetingplace, time and determine areas ofinterest. I believe that we can attractothers outside the club with expertiseand experience in this area for somepresentations at meetings. However mostof what we do must come from within.

My own interests include the stock andoptions markets. I plan to try the DowJones services shortly. My Apple hasbeen useful to me but I suspect I amjust scratching the surface on itspotential. I hope to share myexperiences and learn from others, including those in such areas ascommodities, in which I am not currentlyactive. Learning more about timesharingservices, software, etc. is moreimportant to me than" investmentstrategy.

What I look for and what you look for inan Investment SIB may differ and it isimportant to get new perspectives anddiversity. So, don"t wait 40r six monthsto check out the Investment SIB, get inon the ground floor. We will hold ourorganizing meeting on:

Thursday, November 11, at 6pm,one hour before the Business SIB meetsat the same place. The time and locationof other meetings will be decided then.If you can 7 t make it, give me a call formore information. My number is 332-8460.Remember, the first meeting will be at:

6 PM, NOVEMBER 11Minnesota School of Business11 South 5th StreetDowntown Mpls-just off the Mall

MINNETONKA BRANCHby Dave Onan and Hartin Thames

The general meeting will be in theregular place at the regular time but onDecember 1st, a compromised Wednesday.

The subject of the meeting will be AppleIII and new applications. Ademonstration will be provided by MikeCarlson of PBS. We would like to invitepeople from anywhere who have not seenthe Apple 11/ work in a business way.

The Business Special Interest Broup metat the Minnesota School of Business onOct. 14th. The SUbjects being reviewedwere :

MicrolMailer, a mailing list program, reviewed by Paula Ozols; File Cabinet, adatabase, reviewed by Alan Peterman.File Cabinet is availible on DOM 2.

MicrolMailer was reviewed in the Octoberissue of Mini'app 7 l es and is designed tobe compatible with Magic Window ( alsoreviewed in last month's magazine >.Paula is the author of MicrolMailer andit is being marketed by PrairieMicrosystems.

File Cabinet is a simple, yet useabledatabase with an easy report generator, which is menu driven. The program isdesigned to be used for files of around200 records and offers an extremelyrapid search routine. One of itshighlights is the price whatever youcan pay for an old DOM!

Our thanks to both of them for theirpresentations.

The Business SIB directory is nowavailible for members! For theothers, I have plenty of blank forms. Please see me at the main meeting or atthe next SIB.

As a result of the AppleFest, we wereapproached by Dynacomp, manufacturers ofC.O.R.P. - a database program generator

and asked if we wished to review theprogram. This has now been received, and Dick Marchiafava and I are planningto take the program through its paces.I would be interested to know of otherswho are either familiar with the programor are interested in evaluatingsoftware. There is no free lunch ••• anarticle on your experiences will beappreciated!

I have also received information thatTouche Ross, the CPA firm, will behelping start a Financial ModellingInterest Broup. This will be basedaround, but not be limited to, MicroDSS/F. For more information, contactMitch Joulson at Touche Ross on 333-2301or call me on 330-7347. From ads in theSunday newspapers, it seems that bothTouche Ross & Arthur Anderson areemphasizing seminars on the Business Useof Micros. I also saw an ad for theCollege of St. Thomas, offering a twoday seminar on the same subject. Itsure makes a $ 12 membership fee seemeconomic!

In addition to these goodies, holda key down and it repeats automatically

So, you might ask, HOW do I selectbetween upper and lower case? Well, simple~ The RTN-RESET actually puts youin the Typewriter mode, exactly as ifyou were on a typewriter. Type a keyand it is lower case. Hit a SHIFT keysimultaneously with another key, andpresto... UPPER CASE! Now comes theneatest trick of all.... Hit CTRLalone, and you are in SHIFT-LOCK!Depress the SHIFT key and you return tolower case.

A r'e:!'V:Leo"""by Chase IHlen

I recently acquired the VIDEXKeyboard Enhancer II, and would like torecommend it to anyone who does a lot ofWord Processing. It also has severalfeatures which make program entry choreseasier, and finally it has somereal-time considerations which are anasset when it is important that youaccount for all keys pressed, regardlessof what other functions are taking placeconcurrently.

In order, lets look at thesefeatures. But first here's a commentabout the hardware compatibility. TheEnhancer II is not compatible directlywith pre-REV 7 Apples. By that I mean,if you have the original keyboard youare probably not compatible. However,by this time many of the older stylekeyboards have been replaced by the onethat has the encoder on a small boardwhich fits on the back of the keyboard. In such cases for this discussion theupgraded system will be considered to bein the REV 7 or later category. Sincethe Enhancer replaces this encodercircuit board, you can see the concernin this area.

Finally, we get to the 'type-ahead'buffer. The Enhancer has a 128character hardware buffer that holdscharacters typed until requested (andacknowledged). from the operatingsystem. This means that the charactersare not lost during disk or otherperipheral equipment operation as is thecase in the standard Apple environment. This has important implications if youhave real-time processing withinterrupts, or other conflictingactivity.

(after a 3/4 second delay) at a 15character per second rate. So what isthe REPT key good for now? Nothing, ifyour hands are as slow as mine. Youspeedies can use it as before, but beready to hop off it quick~ It repeatsimmediately at 50 characters persecond! So now if you want to return tothe old familiar Apple, simply hit theRESET key, alone. (Don't worry youwon't lose all that text - remember theCTRL-RESET Configuration?) All it doesis return to the upper case only mode.

So ..• What else did I promise? Ahyes, the Program Entry enhancements.Well, the keyboard can hold 'Macros'.That means that you can press a keywhich can stand for a word, or words ofyour own choosing. As you are enteringtext, you shift to the originalkeyboard, press a key and 10 and beholdthe entire word 'program' (or whateverelse you loaded) is entered. This ismost useful for those Pascal users inthe crowd, because Pascal uses numerous'Key' words like WRITELN, READLN, BEGIN,END, IF •• THEN •. ELSE, etc., etc. If youuse the convention as I do that all keywords are full caps, and the rest ofyour local variables are capitalizedlower-case, this feature cuts downconsiderably on the keyst~okes

required. These macros can be enteredas you need them, or can be 'downloaded'at boot time from a specially prepared'HELLO' type program.

In all I am very happy with theEnhancer, and recommend it highly, butwith a couple of reservations. Namely, the documentation leaves a lot to bedesired. I think it is all there, butnot very well organized. Also, I havean early version which does have someconflicts with the game paddles, andgames in general. As the Enhancer is aninstallation which is not easilyremoved, you have to be sure you knowwhat the trade-offs are. (In fairness,I have been told that there is a new ROMwhich takes care of the conflicts, and Ithink it is possible to program aroundthe problems.) If anyone has anyquestions, or wants to see ademonstration of the installation, as Ihave implemented it, feel free tocontact me and we will get together.

I IENHANCERVIDEX

Now to the features. For a wordProcessor, most users would like to seea more normal typewriter-like keyboard. With the Enhancer you have about asclose to a typewriter keyboard as youcan get and still use the Applehardware. The Enhancer turns the AppleKeyboard into a two mode device. Thefirst mode, directly on cold boot, isunchanged from the familiar upper caseonly, standard Apple board (VIDEX hasplayed games with the RESET key - youalmost certainly want to go to theCTRL-RESET configuration to effect are-boot) and RTN-RESET initiates theTypewriter keyboard mode. A lower-casechip is supplied, which gives you lowercase letters on your display. Theselower case letters can come from theEnhancer.

Instead, questions notsufficiently answered there, questionssubmitted anonymously, or questions youd?n't feel comfortable presenting orallywlil be accepted. The questions maycover literally anything in the realm ofcomputer science, hopefully with someapplication to the Apple.

PRESIDENT'S

The newsletter was excellent, in contentand form, and the numerous ads werevital to our financial success. Welldone.

The technicaFdata cards that we gaveaway at the Applefest were very welldone. We had several requests foradditional copies, and they were notinferior to the cards being sold atanother booth. We can be proud of thateffort.

The graphi display was, I noted, watched bymany, and there was often acrowd watching during the two days I wasthere. . It was all I'd hoped for andmore. Congratulations. I suggest werevamp it a little and use it in ourorientation sessions each month.

The DOM was popular at the 'fest, and Ithought there were some very goodprograms offered~ Bravo.

Finally, the overall organization of theclub's booth was deserving of praise.Ample supplies were available, manpowerwas where it was needed and the boothwas well designed. I am well pleased.Does it show?

Get to the point, you say! OK. THESpreadsheet is a VisiCalc™look-a-like It's not identical, butamazinglysfmilar. The scree!'" is almostidentical. The funny thing is that inmost ways it's bett.er> than VisiCalc™.

I did learh1:o/.useTHESpreadsheet in acouple of evenings,so<itcan.'t be toohard to learh. One person told me thathe was al ways cOhfused by.the .Vi si Cal C™manual, and thatTHE.Sj:Jreadsheet manualwas much less confusing. I found themanual a little brief·. It ....elies on thefact that you will experiment a lot, butdoes assume the reader is an absolutenovice.

There are some interesting operationaldifferences. THE Spreadsheet uses thestandard Apple 11+ cursor control ofI,J,K and L. Personally I find thatmuch easier than the spacebar flip-flopof upldown leftlright in conjunctionwith <> keys. Commands are immediatelyavailable without the preceding 'I'.However, the VisiCalc™ label concept isreplaced with a Control T followed byText for Text field and Values must bepreceded by Control V. Arrows work likein BASIC. If you have alot of values toenter a Value Stream mode may be invokedwhereby it is not necessary to hitControl V before each value entry.Thefore the number of keystrokesrequired for data entry into THESpreadsheet is probably less than for

·VisiCalc™.

-13-

The 2nd THE Spreadsheet disk contains'VCConvert' to convert VisiCalc™ filesto THE Spreadsheet.

THE Spreadsheet also provides a TextFile format (which is what VCConvertconverts to). It is claimed to be about75% more space efficient than theVisiCalc™ DIF files. Incidentally theTHE Spreadsheet Text files are simplycommand strings just as if they had beentyped through the keyboard. Ittherefore is fairly easy to convertother data, such as Word Processingfiles into THE Spreadsheet Text filesjust using the Word Processing editorand liberal use of Search and Replace.

There seems to be more capability tocontrol your printer. For example, options are provided for specifying top, bottom, left and right margins andwhether or not to issue a forms feed atbottom of page. It should also bepossible to use the Text file inputfeature to define any specific printerset-up which might be desired.

A Word Proc::essorReovieowby Ken Slingsby

SCREEN WRITER ]( is a word processor forthe Apple ]( by On-Line Systems. It hasmany features found in most wordprocessors and several unique featuresnot generally available.

My system includes a Saturn Systems 32KRam board, a single disk, an Epson MX-80printer, and a surplus black and whitemonitor. The additional memory is notrequired for the SCREEN WRITER; howevera second disk drive would be nice. Theword processor will automatically useextra memory if it finds more than 48Kavailable, but not all 32K in my case.

I have been using SCREEN WRITER for amonth or so and am still trying to learnall its capabilities. That is not tosay that the processor is overlycomplicated, just that there are so manycommands that one most likely will notuse them all at anyone sitting. Priorto using SCREEN WRITER, I used an earlyversion of SuperText extensively. Ihave also tried the Programma version ofApple Pie, Applewriter, and MagicWindow, all for short periods of time.

When you boot up the processor, you aregreeted with a main menu which willallow the user to select the editor,"EDITOR"; the printout portion,"RUNOFF"; the program which customizesSCREEN WRITER to your configuration,"CUSTOMIZE"; or exit. The EDITOR andRUNOFF are both offered in Ram card ornon-Ram card versions. If the userselects the non-Ram card version and hasa language board, the system uses theextra memory to hold more text in theApple's memory. If a 16K memory boardis present and the Ram card version ofeither EDITOR or RUNOFF are selected, both will be loaded into memory, makingboth available instantly.

features this program hastoo numerous to mentionhighlight some of the more

The number ofare almosthere. I willunique ones.

Like many of the better word processorson the market today, SCREEN WRITER hasmany features. To implement the largenumber of commands that support thefeatures, nearly every key on thekeyboard is used. Most commands are usedwithin the EDITOR which has threemodes. The Command mode allows cursormovement within the file, loading andsaving of the file, and parameterdefinition. The Change mode allows onefor one character replacement. TheInsert mode allows character insertionwherever the cursor is located. Each ofthe three modes allow character, word,or line deletions, search and/orreplace, and block moves, for instance. The same key or keys are used in thethree modes. This is done by using thecontrol key with the command key in theinsert and change modes and only thecommand key in the command mode. Inaddition, the direction of the affectedtext (either before the cursor or afterit) is determined by the shift key orlack of it, respectively, (assuming theone wire shift key modification isinstalled. Otherwise, the Escape keycan be used). One nice thing here tonote is that almost all the commands areavailable in the insert or changemodes. This eliminates the bother ofhaving to get to the command mode tomove the cursor, as some processorsrequire.

The Apple's hi-res screen is used todisplay all text. This allows a specialcharacter set which includes upper andlower case and symbols for all controlcharacters. This makes it unnecessaryto spend the $30 or so for a lower caseadapter. The manual gives instructionsto change the font to whatever the userwants. This new font would be used onlyfor display on the screen and would notaffect the printed copy. As new text isinserted, the old text is scrolled aheadof the cursor. This makes updating thescreen very slow if characters are addedat the top of a full screen. SCREENWRITER compensates for this by providinga type ahead buffer implemented insoftware. I have not been able to typefaster than the system can acceptcharacters, although sometimes it takesseveral seconds for the letters toappear on the screen. But then, mytyping is not all that fast.

By using the hi-res screen, SCREENWRITER allows one to view the text in aseventy column format. This is done byredefining the characters of thecharacter set to be three pixels wideeach. The resulting text is somewhat

][LJRITERSCREEN

The manual has four chapters devoted toa tutorial to guide the first-time userthrough the package. I found this partof. the manual to be very readable andeasy to follow. The remainder of themanual was not meant to be easy readingand is more like a reference manual. There are many examples to make firsttime setup easy for the less mundanetasks such as reports and form letterscomplete with mailing lists. The earlychapters cover the system in generalwith later chapters going intoprogressively more detail. Almost all.ofthe typos that Superscribe (the earlIerversion of SCREEN WRITER) was noted forhave been corrected. I have found oneerror. The people at On-Line Systemswere most helpful in correcting it overthe phone.

-14-

Page 15: mini~pp'les · apple!compu~ruser group newsletter VOLUME V NC) 11 NOVEMBER 1982 CALENDAR WHICH WHEN CALENDAR WHERE CALENDAR WHAT Pascal Note 1 Dakota County Branch Board Meeting Note

The program, with all its whistles &ndbells, is considerably longer than thetypical utility or game. Apparently, noattempt was made to use any of the fastloading schemes that are around. In anycase the program loading is quitelengthy. Thank goodness that, with theRAM card, the program loading isrequired only once.

As you can see, I am well satisfied withthe capabilities of SCREEN WRITER. Ithas a lot more features than I havedescribed here. This may make thesoftware somewhat difficult for thosenew to word processing. My advice to apotential customer of any word processoris to skim the instruction manual andtryout the program in the store beforepurchasing the software.! did and I'mglad for it. GOTO 16

The error handling leads one to believethat every possible error is covered. Ihave not been able to crash theprogram. Pressing reset brings up theapprQpiate ·menu or puts you at thebeginning of the current document. Ifyou then select any other option, youwill find all previously entered dataintact. If a disk error occurs, thecurrent output file is deleted and youare given the opportunity to save itagain on another disk.

I have found some problems withpackage. It was disappointing tothat two drives were requiredprinter spooling. It would seemfor files of less than half of thein length, one drive wouldsufficient.

The manual repeatedly warns the user tomake backup copies of his work. Onealmost gets the feeling that the datawill disappear at any moment. While Iwill not dispute the wisdom of thewarnings, their frequency gives me anuneasy feeling. One sure way to trash afile is to name the output and input·files the same, especially if the inputfile is too long to fit in memory at onetime. I found this the hard way a fewtimes and had to resort to olderversions of the files. There is onewarning about this in the manual. Thereason given leads one to believe theproblem might occur if there was a powerfailure or hardware glitch. I believethe reason for the problem is that the'old' copy of the output file is deletedbefore it is saved. Thus if the inputand output files have the same name, thefile is lost before it is saved. Thebest safeguard would be to have theprogram prohibit both ~iles having thesame name. In any event, it pays tokeep backup copies of important work.

difficult to read compared to the normalforty column text, but not all thatbad. I usually enter text in the fortycolumn mode and switch to more columnsif I want to get an idea of how thefinished text will look. Any number ofcharacters per line may be selectedbetween ten and seventy.

Any key on the key board can beredefined to be any other key or aseries of keys. These Macros, as theyare called, can be very helpful if arepetitive phrase needs to be enteredinto the text. For instance, the name"SCREEN WRITER" was entered as a controlo in typing this review.

One of the most unique features ofSCREEN WRITER is its ability to generateindexes while printing the document. The user can define up to four indexeswhich mayor may not be alphabetized, asdesired. In addition the index entriesmayor may not be printed in the body ofthe text. A non-printing index which isnot sorted can become the table ofcontents. The index entries are definedby the user in the EDITOR. RUNOFF fillsin the page numbers while the documentis being printed. .. SCREEN WRITER canalso handle footnotes~ reserving r09mfor them at the bottom of theappropriate page.

by Tony Meirovitz

PERSONAL SECRETARY and printed. There are hundreds ofthings you can do with the card fileprogram. Whatever suits your needs. That's why they call it The PERSONALSecretary.

That's a brief description of the wordprocessor. It is, for the money, a verynice program. I used Apple WrIter II,which is about the same price asPersonal Secretary, and in my opinion,Personal Secretary has it beat cold. The card file program is the icing onthe cake. The Personal Secretary andExecutive Secretary are both comptiblewith Sof/Sys's program -The ExecutiveSpeller. This program will proofread adocument for errors. Another plus forthe Secretary series. The author, JohnRisken and his gang down at Sof/Sys andPersonal Business Systems have been likea second family to me for the past 2years. Believe me, for the amount oftime I've known them, they have alwaysbeen the best, and The PersonalSecretary, Executive Secretary, andExecutive Speller show for that.

-16-

-The editor. I think this is by far theeasiest editor I have ever used. It·s.r _just beautiful. It keeps up withprofessional typing speed, supportsmanual global search, and user-definedprinter abbreviations. The act of usingprinter codes is the most elementary andstraightforward I have seen. The blockoperations include move, transfer anddelete, and character/word/line: delete, insert, replace.

The Personal Secretary Word Processor, made by Sof/Sys, Inc., is an idealat-home word processor. The programitself is a "stripped down" version ofSof/Sys's other marketed word processor,The Executive Secretary. In other words,it doesn't have as many features asExecutive Secretary does. The PersonalSecretary carries a retail price of$100.00. With it, you get a lower casechip, and shift key modifier, and a veryeasy to follow manual. Also included isa certificate that allows you $50.00credit toward purchase of the ExecutiveSecretary, if you find you need it inthe long run. It has three main parts:the editor, the printer, and the cardfile program. Below, I will explaineach of these parts.

-The printer. This important partallows mail-list merging with thebuilt-in card file, integrates keyboardinput, and allows conditional printingbased on the IF command. It alsosupports left and right justified tabstops, margin control andjustification. This looks very nicewhen you are printing out an importantdocument, and you want both marginsjustified. It does it quickly andeasily. Specifications for regularindenting, justification and centeringcan be easily embedded in the document.

-The Card File. I feel this is the mostvaluable part of this program. The cardfile program is another way of saying itis a 'mini' data base. It allows 1 cardfile per disk, with up to 299 recordsper file and 7 lines per record. Thinkof the the card file as being the recipecard box, and the 299 records are therecipes. The file may be rearrangedbased on alphabetical sortingprincipal. This card file program isuseful if you have a mailing list, andwant mailing labels printed. You justenter them in, and they can be saved,

Example: To print "VisiCalc™'', thefollowing sequence is used:

the word processors do their owncharacter counting.

There is one fine point buriedsomewhere in the TRS-BO instructionsof the new Graftrax manual whichconcerns Super/Sub-scripting. If youuse either Super- or Sub-scripts, youwill enter a mode similar to'Condensed'. You may remember thatyou cannot output in Condensed modeunless you turn off 'Emphasized' (EscF). The same is true for the Superor Sub-scripts.

Also, after you have finished printingSuper- or Sub-scripts you will be in'Double strike' mode just as if youhad issued an 'Esc G'. Therefore ifyou don't want to be in 'DoubleStrike', turn it off!

One other observation about Graptrax +:Gary Mariash, a club" member, wrote anEpson Hires dump program about a yearago. It worked fine on his machine, butalways inserted a vertical white line, onmy Epson. I thought he had a bug. Wellsince installing Graftrax + the problemhas gone away!

You can get around the problem byissuing an Epson RESET.

Esc @

Note VisiCalc is in Emphasized mode asare •• the words that follow it!

VisiCalc I: S@ I: FTMI: SA I: EI: H

Where:I: is an Escape or CHR$ (27) ,@ is an Ascii 0 or CHR$(O) andA is a ~trl ~ or CHR$(l).

I fo~nd one minor glitch. If you usethe!;jei: High Order Bit

Esc>followed by text which mayor may notinclude the line graphic characters, youwill probabI y use the CI ear Hi gh OrderBit-

Escto\t:!nd the sequence. This may result ina problem if you next do some graphics. It seems as if the High order bit ispermanently cleared by the 'Esc ='.After the 'Est: =', you can'i: utilize anyg,."'ilhics sequence wl1ichresults in a.dotcount that requires that high orderbit. Fore:xample, if i,t is desired tosend a graphic sequence of 129 dots innorm",l density graphics, you wouldoutput:

Esc K A 0where A is-the character the Ascii codeof which is 129 and 0 is the characterthe Ascii code of which is zero. Insidethe Epson the 129 seems to get convertedto 1 (the high order bit is stripped).

When you switch modes, with the oldGraftrax the print head would alwayshome to the left margin. Now it backsup just far enough so it canaccelerate uo to speed.

If you use the column width feature,Esc 'Q', n

Example: Esc Q (will set column width to 40 characters{( has ASCII code of 40}. Then youwill find that the Epson assumes youmean the space occupied by 40 regularcharacters. The Epson again counts·dots, so whatever mix of charactersyou have (including imbedded graphics)will be limited to the number of dotsthat correspond to 40 characters.

Unfortunately most word processorswill be unable to take advantage ofthis printer hardware feature because

Another nice feature which goes alongwith graphics is that the printer nolonger hangs when you tell it to printgraphics that run off the page.

One very important change in Graftrax~ concerns forms control. Theprinter will count dots not linefeeds. If you use graphics, the linefeed upspace (in number of dots) isoften changed. Previously the If theline feed value changed during theprinting of a page, the Epson wouldlose track of top-of-form, because itcounted line feeds. If you werereally crafty you could compensate forthis, but that was usually moretrouble than it was worth. Now inboth the character count mode and theinch mode the form length isremembered in dots. If you specifyforms length as 66 lines, it willassume 12 dots per line and rememberthe forms length as 66 * 12 = 792dots.

If you use graphics a lot, the setforms length in inches is reallyuseful.

Esc C @ nwhere @ is the character whose ASCIIcode is 00 (Ctl SH~FT M, SHIFT P withPie-Writer) and 1 <= n <=22, n alsobeing a character, the ASCII code ofwhich is n. This will set form lengthto n inches. Note that

Esc C nwhere n>22 will set forms length inlines.

I finally got a set of Graftrax ~ chipsinstalled in my MX-BO. Besidesperforming all of the functions reportedin last month's newsletter and earliereditions, there are some really niceless obvious features.

DOM #16 Since no DOM would be completewithout a few games, there is a newgame, APP-MAN, from Kevin Bradley andJeff Merth and some old INTEGER gamesthat WILL run under the RAM INTEGER onthis disk.

The November DOM contains someuseful utilities for HI-RES work and theoften asked for INTEGER BASIC in RAM forthose of you without a 16K or ROM card.As always, the disk has a distinctivelogo to start it off, but this month'sdisk has a NEW logo that uses shapetables and the DRAW command. Thisprogram is a good example of how to useSHAPE TABLES (pages 92-100 in theAPPLESOFT manual).

In addition, Dr. Fine has given usanother fine tax program to do the workon IRS Form G (income averaging) or theor the other tax rate schedules. He hasalso given us a nice cryptology programthat makes code breaking moreconvenient. Included are a few samplefiles of codes to work on. Please DO NOTcall me for the answers. I don't knowthem.

Under the miscellaneous category isa sales program by David Lau forrecalling sales data and printing outreports. For the golf set there is aprogram to analyze scores. It comesfrom Dana Lonn, along with his golfscores for the '82 season.

Please let me say that I am not knockingVisiCalc™. It is a marvelous programand came out first. Lots of people havelearned VisiCalc™ and shouldn't try tochange. They might find it difficult tobreak well-entrenched operator habits. My only point is that if you are apersonal computer user on a tightbudget, the high cost of VisiCalc™makes THE Spreadsheet a fantastic buy! And, as we said, it's better in some~ays. At the $22.50 price, A.P.P.L.E.IS effectively giving the softwareaway. The $22.50 just covers thedistribution and advertising costs of 2disks and a manual!No(4)

COMPARISON

Below is a quick run-down of thedifferences between VisiCalc™ and THESpreadsheet. Don't hold me to absoluteaccuracy, for I'm not really anaccomplished VisiCalc™ user. The listcompares THE Spreadsheet with theregular VisiCalc™ and the new AdvancedVisiCalc™, which lists for $400. Myinformation on advanced VisiCalc™ camefrom their brochure.

Notes:1. You can use Locksmith 4.1 to make

backups but that's a real nuisance.2. Replicate on THE Spreadsheet is

effectively identical to VisiCalc™.In order to use Replicate, you musthave a 16k RAM card. You can specialorder a 48k version of THESpreadsheet for an extra $5.

3., In many cases the logical operatorsAND and OR may be simulated withappropriate use of the arithmeticoperators +,_,A,* and /.
