Pauline corpus• Appears to be used by Paul in a

very similar way to Nephesh in the Old Testament

EXPLORING CONCEPTS

The ‘Spirit’ in the Bible

Page 19: Mining the Soul

Multidimensional meaning of Spirit

• As God’s Spirit• As Wind• As Breath

• Hebrew word ‘Ruah’

Page 20: Mining the Soul

Ruah as Wind

• Genesis 1:2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

• Genesis 3:8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

Page 21: Mining the Soul

Ruah as breath

• Genesis 7:15 They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life.

Page 22: Mining the Soul

Ruah as God’s Spirit• Numbers 24:2 Balaam looked up

and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. Then the spirit of God came upon him,

• 1 Samuel 11:6 And the spirit of God came upon Saul in power when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.

• Isaiah 61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, …

Page 23: Mining the Soul

Ezekiel 37

• Ezekiel 37:1 aThe hand of the LORD was upon me, and bhe brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley;1 it was full of bones.

• Ezekiel 37:6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath1 in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD."

Page 24: Mining the Soul

Ezekiel 37

• Ezekiel 37:9 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath:1 Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live."

Dale Martin

• ‘in the ancient world, the human body was not like a microcosm; it was a microcosm – a small version of the Universe at large’

The Corinthian Body p. 16)

Page 26: Mining the Soul

God’s Spirit or Our Spirit?

• 9 But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit1 is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ1 from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through2 his Spirit that dwells in you.

Page 27: Mining the Soul

Romans 8.26-27

• 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes1

with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God,1 who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit2

intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

EXPLORING CONCEPTS

The interchange between ‘Soul’ and ‘Spirit’ in Paul

Page 29: Mining the Soul

1 Corinthians 15.44-45

• 44 It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

• It is sown a psuchikos body and raised a pneumatikos body. If there is a psuchikos body there is also a pneumatikos body. Thus it is written ‘The first man, Adam, became a living psuche; the last Adam became a life making pneuma.

EXPLORING CONCEPTS

The ‘Body’ in Paul

Page 31: Mining the Soul

Examples of Uses of Flesh

• Romans 1:3 the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh

• 1 Corinthians 15:39 Not all flesh is alike, but there is one flesh for human beings, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.

Page 32: Mining the Soul

Examples of use of Flesh

• 1 Corinthians 3:1 And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.

• Romans 8:4 so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Page 33: Mining the Soul

Examples of Uses of Body

• Romans 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.

• Romans 6:12 Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions.

Page 34: Mining the Soul

Examples of Uses of Body

• 1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?

Page 35: Mining the Soul

Romans 12.1-2

• Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God -- what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Drawing Conclusions

• Nourishing the soul is a vital thing to do– Encouraging young people to focus

on what makes them most alive– To identify and feel comfortable with

their life-force

Page 37: Mining the Soul

• But as Christians we also should encourage young people to be aware of the spirit– God’s Spirit– And their spirit perfectly

intertwined.

Drawing Conclusions

Page 38: Mining the Soul

• Paul’s Vision is one which we might all wish to share– to seek a full integration of body,

mind and spirit– And in doing so to present a vision

of the body beautiful in the world
