Mining and recycling in Poland

MEERI (www.meeri.pl) Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute was established in 1986 in Krakow as a constituent unit of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Institute employs 101 persons. Research carried out on a complete range of topics, including both basic and applied research within an overriding vision of interdisciplinarity and understanding the complexity of necessary methodology. It covers both local, regional, national and EU aspects. The scientific activities of the Institute are among other: • assessment of efficiency and profitability of new investments in the mineral

resources economy and waste management; • life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis; • analysis of risk in geotechnical projects concerning the underground storage

of hazardous waste; • legal and economic aspects of industrial waste storage in exhausted mine

sites.

Cooperation in Poland - mining

MEERI is a member of

Polish Technological Platform on Raw Materials – established in February 2011 on

KGHM CUPRUM's initiative – there are 26 business entities, mainly large mining

companies.

Mission

Long-lasting and active co-operation for effective use of raw materials, consistent

with sustainable development principles, using innovative and modern solutions

and technologies, as well as initiation and conducting economic undertakings and

promotion activities.

Strategic international dialogues and cooperation with raw materials producing

countries and industry

MEERI is a member of The Waste Management and Recycling Cluster is formed by businesses, research and development units, business support institutions, consulting companies and foundations dedicated to environmental education. There are 38 entities – mainly SMEs (over 50% of capacity in Polish market of WEEE recycling). The core of the cluster are companies engaged in collection, disposal, processing, recycling and transport of all types of industrial waste. A cluster is a platform and an area of cooperation of companies, often competing with one another, which through synergy and access to specific resources (knowledge, new technology, people, etc.).

Stimulate innovative technological solutions: • Rearth EO from Phosphogypsum Waste in Poland; • Gal and germanium recovery form Zn-Pb deposits; • Recovery of phosphorus from industrial sewage sludge ashes; • Implementation of backfilling technology underground mines

(Trzebionka mine Zn-Pb – patented).

MEERI innovative acctivites

• Recognition of the excavation of the rock mass structure providing for

the floor of the operating method of screening using seismic and

borehole GPR – implemented in Cu mine in Poland;

• Use of gravity survey and GPR aperture and own methodology for

assessment risk discontinuous deformations, and for purification in the

ground-based technologies hole injection and its implementation for i.e.

design to secure construction of the railway line.

MEERI innovative acctivites

• Exchange of information mining data and policy, project appraisal, market analysis and assessment, CSR, LCA;

• Contact with many SMEs, platforms and clusters, NGO to exchange data about technology transfer in mining and urban mining (WEEE);

• Creation of common system for minerals market analysis and assessment including trade flow on EU level;

• Assessment of methods and innovative technology about managemnet of post-mining areas (reclamation/remediation);

• Cooperation with neighbourhood countries, i.e. Ukraina.
