“Our requirements were quite specific. We operate two minibuses, one of which is accessible for students with wheelchairs, and we wanted to replace both at the same time. In addition we wanted the minibuses to match the deep red of the school’s corporate brand, which we know isn’t a standard colour.

We began by approaching the dealer with whom we held the original lease to request a quote. I knew that we would need more than one quote to get a good comparison so it was then that I approached HTM.

In fact, HTM were able to obtain quotes on our behalf using their framework of suppliers so this saved us a lot of time and effort. They responded quickly with a very good value option and were able to offer exactly what we wanted.

HTM worked closely with us to ensure the paintwork would match our specifications, providing swatches so we knew it was going to be spot-on. They also arranged for the school name and logo to be applied to both vehicles.

There was a slight delay between our old vehicles being taken away by the original dealer and the delivery of our new minibuses. However, from our point of view there was no issue because on this occasion HTM provided like-for-like courtesy vehicles, meaning school trips could continue uninterrupted.

I can honestly say that HTM provides an excellent service and offers great value for money over the life of the lease term. It’s a complete package, from providing the best vehicle to meet our needs with comprehensive insurance and full warranty, through to maintaining the vehicle at HTM’s conveniently located workshops and providing a courtesy vehicle while the minibus is off the road. Plus, we can rest assured that all the legal and duty of care ‘boxes are ticked’ which is fantastic.

If you’re considering leasing or buying a minibus from a commercial supplier, be sure to think carefully about your requirements and the terms of the contract being offered. There may be some pitfalls that are not initially apparent and could cost you in the long run, such as:

POINTS TO CONSIDER

VEHICLE TYPE AND SPECIFICATIONAlways compare like-with-like as some vehicles have a limited life and the specification may not offer additional benefits (such as reversing sensors) or meet Euro 6.2 standards.

We procure Ford Transit minibuses which we believe offer a good build quality, have a long life and are reliable. Reversing sensors and heated electric mirrors come as standard and the minibuses meet Euro 6.2 standards.

MAINTENANCENot all contracts include the maintenance of your vehicle, and if they do, they may insist that you take your vehicle to a main dealer which may not be local to you.

All maintenance of your vehicle is included in our contract hire arrangement and is an optional extra for outright purchase customers. We operate five modern workshops across Hampshire, staffed by professional and fully-trained Technicians. Courtesy vehicles are available on request, subject to availability.

RESIDUAL VALUESCommercial dealers often offer very low monthly costs. But closer inspection shows the residual value of the minibus will be pretty high and the dealer will want to reduce that value against the condition of the minibus at the end of the lease. This means every ‘imperfection’ they find will cost you, recharging a greater amount than expected.

Our contract hire arrangement offers a fair and realistic residual value for the length of the contract and the anticipated wear and tear on the vehicle.

EXCESS AND LOW MILEAGEMany lease companies will set low annual mileage rates and charge more than 10p per excess mile over these rates. This will leave you with a huge bill at the end of the lease.

We charge just 5p per excess mile and set realistic annual mileage rates.

ADDITIONAL MONTHSSome commercial dealers may request additional contract hire months up front. This will lower their monthly costs making it appear to be a cheaper deal.

Our contacts never ask for additional monthly payments up front.

TYRES AND WINDSCREENSMost lease companies do not include tyre or windscreen replacements in the lease agreement.

We cover all tyre repairs not caused by negligence and we offer 24-hour mobile cover for repairs to tyres and windscreens.

VEHICLE RECOVERYLease companies invariably supply vehicle recovery that only covers the vehicle following a breakdown.

We offer a full recovery service that will get your vehicle to a place of repair following a breakdown or accident and ensure that all passengers are transported to their destination.

INSURANCEMost lease companies do not offer insurance.

For Hampshire County Council establishments, fully comprehensive insurance is included in our contract hire price.

ACCIDENT REPAIRSFollowing an accident, many lease companies will leave it to you to arrange for accident repairs.

Following an accident, we will make a full assessment of the required repairs and arrange for estimates and the final repair to be carried out on your behalf.
