“Miniature Steam” Vertical Single Cylinder Steam Engine “Echuca”

The Echuca is typical of many vertical stationary single cylinder steam engines used in the 19th and early 20th century in Australia. Engines of this type were used in the gold fields, saw mills, small factories and for powering small boats. By adding Stephenson's reversing linkage the Echuca becomes a marine steam engine capable of powering model steamboats up to five feet on a boiler pressure of about 40 psi.

Section 1 - About Us

Miniature Steam Pty Ltd (incorporating Live Steam Supplies) is operated from our modern factory/show room in Montrose, an outer eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

. The owner of the business, John Godfrey, made and sold his first models at the tender age of

eight and has now turned a lifetime of hobby modeling into a thriving business. His professional experience as a metallurgist has provided an ideal background for the design and manufacture of the highest quality model engines offered here. He is a perfectionist when presenting his own products, and applies the same standards to selection of third party products offered.

The combination of alloys chosen and the investment casting (lost wax) method produce superb

castings, an ideal start for modelers wanting to machine their own components. In doing so they are supported by (unique to this industry) documentation of all components required for the whole project – not just the casting machining instructions. This includes a listing of raw materials that may be required for machining of non-casting sourced items, details of nuts, bolts and screws required and a listing of other components that will be required for the whole project.

Another unique service offered by Miniature Steam is a comprehensive backup support for

supply/replacement of individual components – whether raw castings, machined castings, pre machined components, sub assemblies, gasket sets, nuts, bolts and screws, etc. The current presentation is going to continue to grow. All machined components offered are machined using modern CNC equipment to exacting tolerances. They have to be if we are going to economically provide assembly kits by simply selecting the items required from our assembly stock. For example machined pistons have to be reliably used in the cylinders of any of our current four engines.

We recognise that model builders take great pride in their workmanship, but they can only produce superior results when applying their skills to superior base materials provided by their supplier.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU:

Miniature Steam Pty Ltd is committed to providing the highest quality products irrespective of cost. We recognise that model builders take great pride in their workmanship, but they can only produce superior results when applying their skills to superior base materials provided by their supplier.

Our castings are produced to the highest international manufacturing and QC standards.

If you buy complete assemblies, we guarantee that they will perform to our published standards.

If you have any technical problems we will endeavour to solve them in communication with you.

All of these commitments apply worldwide.

Miniature Steam uses the finest of materials and, the latest manufacturing methods in the production of all of its castings. Even though Miniature Steam makes every attempt to produce the highest quality castings and inspects every casting before it leaves the factory, a flaw may occur during casting and leave the factory undetected. Any casting returned and accepted by us as faulty will be returned (including postage (first class air mail of our overseas customers) free of charge, but shall not be the subject of a claim for compensation for labour or any other loss. If you happen to be unfortunate enough to damage a casting during machining there is no need to disband the project. Miniature Steam can supply a replacement casting so as you can finish off your steam engine. Please write to Miniature Steam, or email [email protected] for a price list of replacement castings or visit our website www.miniaturesteammodels.com to order a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. The casting kits have not being supplied with gaskets, bolt sets and small items of brass to make some of the machined components.

A survey of model engineers revealed that most of them have a "junk box" which to draw from for the necessary bits and pieces and did not considered it necessary to include them in the casting set. As a result Miniature Steam considered including them in the kit would unnecessary increasing the price and selling to model engineer items he/she may already have. Miniature Steam can supply gaskets and bolt sets if required. Please write for latest price list or visit our website to order a replacement . 2. I can machine almost all of the parts but some of them are beyond the capabilities of my work shop facilities.

Miniature Steam has a comprehensive list of fully machined parts available. Please write for latest price list or visit our website to order a replacement 3. The Crank Shaft that has been supplied is slightly bent.

Because of tile design of the crankshaft it may slightly distort during cooling. It is a simple process to straighten the crankshaft. Place one end in a three jaw chuck and with the tool post placed near the free end observe the amount of run out. Push the crankshaft back until no runout has been observed. The crankshaft should not break during this process. The crankshaft is manufactured from spheroidal graphite cast iron and is very ductile. If it breaks during this process Miniature Steam will replace it free of charge. Please remember to return the broken crankshaft with your claim.

Foire Aux Questions (FAQ)

Section 2 - General Assembly

Note: The information provided in this document is accurate at the time of printing. As we are constantly improving our products there may be some inconsistencies between the items supplied in a package and the information in this manual. Please contact us if the differences are of serious concern to you. General Instructions It is important to understand the way that component part numbers are used within this document. Part numbers generally fall into the following categories: #1000 series are generally castings that cannot easily be machined from machining stock #2000 series are components that can be made from bar stock machined to drawings supplied. #4000 series are boilers and boiler accessories

#5000 series are assemblies of #1000/2000 series components. These are mainly referred to on our website.

#9000 series are nuts, bolts screws and like items that can be purchased as necessary

In communications with us you can add an “M” suffix to casting drawing part numbers to indicate that you are referring to a pre-machined casting component that we machined (mostly using CNC equipment) to the drawings supplied. • All components may be purchased separately. Individual #1000 series castings are available as raw castings as well as precisely machined items. Individual #2000 series items are also available as precisely machined to our drawings. Some #2000 series are only available in finished form. (See Purchase Items below). As explained in our FAQ above, we are prepared to exchange castings in original condition for machined castings, for the cost difference. Please visit our website to check out pricing and ordering information. Please note that the dimensions of some machined components may vary with supplied drawings due to the technical requirements of CNC machining. Where this possible conflict exists we have advised the purchase of sub-assemblies that properly compensates for the specific issues. • On receipt of a product set, always check that you have received the correct quantity of components as listed in the “Item List” for the product ordered. This is also an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the part numbers associated with the items, that in turn are mentioned in the descriptive material. • Our pre-machined components are made to the highest standards but we still recommend that you purchase pre cut gasket sets made from the widely respected Klinger gasket material. We only recommend “lapping” associated parts in special circumstances. • When assembling an engine made correctly to the drawings, everything should come together easily. If you encounter stiffness in the assembly then backtrack and trace its origin. NEVER try to force a smooth result. With pre-machined components it is most likely to be caused by a machining burr. • Drawings are set out in the Appendices, with general assembly drawings first followed by relevant machining drawings grouped by sub assembly.

Section 3 Valve Timing & Engine Care Procedures

Valve Timing – Non Reversing Engines

This procedure applies to both single and twin cylinder engines

1. With an otherwise fully assembled engine: a. Remove the Steam Chest Cover b. Remove the big end cap on the Eccentric Rod c. Rotate the crankshaft to reveal the grub screw on the Eccentric and loosen the

grub screw. The grub screw should not project above the eccentric surface. d. Remove the Top Cylinder Cover

2. Gently holding the Connecting Rod against the Eccentric, rotate the Eccentric on its shaft to examine the way the Valve covers the ports at each end of its travel. In the following procedure the objective is to have the Valve, cover the top and bottom ports with the same amount of overlap.

3. To adjust the Valve position, remove the Eccentric Connecting Rod from the Eccentric

and turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise to adjust the position of the Slide Valve Locator on the Valve Rod

4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until there is a uniform Valve/port overlap at both TDC and BDC of

the Eccentric 5. Rotate the Crankshaft to position the Piston at TDC. 6. Rotate the Eccentric to have the Valve just uncovering the top inlet port and tighten the

Eccentric grub screw. 7. Replace the cap on the Eccentric Rod and check that the lower entry port behaves as for

step 6 with the piston at BDC. If a fine adjustment is required, insert the grub screw Allen key into the oil hole in the Eccentric Rod big end, gently rotate the crankshaft to locate the Allen key, loosen the grub screw, rotate the eccentric and big end to make the adjustment and retighten the grub screw.

8. Replace the Steam Chest cover and the Top Cylinder Cover and your engine is now

ready for use. Valve Timing – Reversing Engines

This procedure applies to both single and twin cylinder engines

This procedure is identical to that for non-reversing engines except that there are two eccentrics to be adjusted for each cylinder. 1. Operate the reversing gear to activate the inside Eccentric. Follow the above procedure. 2. Operate the reversing gear to engage the other Eccentric and repeat the above procedure. You should be able to skip steps 3,4 and 5 for this second Eccentric adjustment, but it is still worth checking before replacing the Steam Chest Cover.

“Miniature Steam” Vertical Single Cylinder Steam Engine “Echuca”

Engine Care.

General: Your “Miniature Steam” engine will run on steam or compressed air up to 80 psi, but it is recommended that you work with a pressure less than 40 psi. Compressed air should only be used for short runs at a time unless you have a special compressed air line lubricator. Likewise with steam, a “displacement lubricator” is recommended for prolonged running. If an appropriate line lubricator is not installed, the steam chest components and piston/cylinder must be frequently lubricated manually as noted below. The crankshaft bearings, valve eccentrics, piston big end and crosshead should be periodically lubricated with an oilcan, using the standard oil cups specified or through oil holes drilled in the big ends. The trunk/crosshead on vertical engines does not have provision for oil cups and must be lubricated directly Startup: To run-in your “Miniature Steam” engine, start by running it under low pressure for about 15 minutes, then stop and check for any unusual tightness or over heated bearings. Correct where necessary, re lubricate and run for another 15 minutes. When satisfied that the engine is running sweetly your engine is run-in and ready for continuing use. Manual Cylinder Lubrication: The best way to lubricate the steam chest and cylinder components is to disconnect either the inlet or exhaust lines and inject oil into the steam chest directly while turning the engine over manually. Oils: If running with compressed air a good quality light machine oil is satisfactory for all purposes. If running with steam the valve chest and cylinder components require a special “steam oil” (P/N 9709) which does not break down under the higher operating temperatures.
