MINI NEWS No. 10 June 15, 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
School Review Thanks to all students, staff and parents for your participation in the school review which was completed by the School Improvement Unit and finished last Friday. We received some very pleasing feedback from the review team (affirmations), as well as some recommendations for how to improve over the next four years. An executive summary of the review will be available on our website by the end of the Term. Chris Collins In Week 10 this term, (Wednesday 20/6/18), our school is hosting author Chris Collins. Chris’ first book Funky Chicken: A Bushy Tale of Crocs and Chooks was released in March 2013. This title is in the Australian curriculum (Qld C2C) and was shortlisted for the 2014 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards. It is also in the Premiers Reading Challenge book list in Queensland, NSW and Victoria. His second book A Bug Called Doug was released in March 2013. This title is in the Qld Premiers Reading Challenge book list and was long-listed in the 2015-2016 ISLN (International School Library Network) Awards. This is a reader’s choice award which makes it extra special! With it's many cross-curriculum applications, this book is widely used in schools and early learning centres around Australia. Chris’ latest title, Funky Chicken: Chooks in Space was released in 2015 and was voted winner of the 2016 SPA (Speech Pathology Australia) Book of the Year Awards. This title is also in the Queensland and Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge book list. We will have 3 sessions running during the morning – 30 minutes for Prep and 45 minutes for Years 1 and 2, and Years 5 and 6. The timetable will be as follows: • Prep 8:55am – 9:25am (Including Prep/1 W) • Years 2 and 3 9:30am – 10:15am (Including 2/3 P) • Years 5 and 6 10:15am – 11:00 am (Including 4/5 H) Students in Year 3 and 4 will not be attending this presentation as they will be going to Whitsunday Voices.
School Rugby League Team Congratulations to our school rugby league team who defeated Emmanuel Catholic College on Wednesday to finish third in the local John Paap Shield competition. At half-time our Northview team were up 10-4 following tries to Kooper Shears and Wilhelm Wienert. With five minutes to go in the game Emmanuel had skipped to a 14-10 lead but a try to Nyzell Sauney and a pressure conversion from the sideline by Lucas Wayman (remember the Cowboys 2015 grand final win) sealed a 16-14 win. Thanks to our players and parents for their support over the season. Staffing Miss Agnew has taken on the role of Mackay District School Sport administrator from next week
through to the end of Term 3. Each Tuesday she will be replaced by Mel Clow to complete her

Athletics Trial Days Next Monday and Tuesday, we will be running our Athletics trial days for students in Years 3-6.
Parents are more than welcome to come and watch from 12.30pm –3.00pm on these days. The
purpose of trial days is to organise students into heats and finals for all track and field events at
our Whole School Athletics Carnival. Students who finish in the top 3 for their sporting house at
trial days will compete in finals of field events at the Athletics carnival. Athletics Carnival Our Whole School Athletics carnival will be held on Friday 22nd June. Students in Years 3-6 will
complete their 800m event on Wednesday 20th June from 1.40pm on the bottom oval. Prep to year 2 students will participate in sprint events during the first part of the carnival before
moving to “fun” rotations. At the end of the day, Preps to Year 2’s return to the carnival to
participate in relays. Students will need to be at school by 8.30am at the absolute latest on this day. We ask students
to be at school by 8.15am to allow enough time to have their name marked off the roll in
classrooms and assemble on the top oval ready for our march past. If your child arrives after
8.30am, they will need to report to their teacher on the oval to have their name marked off the roll. Our P&C are also running tuckshop and a home bake stall on the bottom oval this year. Sausage
sizzle, steak burgers, and lots of treats, drinks and tea/coffee. The home bake stall will be
available all day on the oval! If you are able to help at our Bake Stall or at our BBQ Station please

Reading Comprehension Strategy – Questioning Here at Northview we use the Question-Answer-Relationship (QAR) to help students understand
the level of question being asked. There are four types of questions examined in the QAR
model: • Right There Questions: Literal questions whose answers can be found in the text.
Often the words used in the question are the same words found in the text. • Think and Search Questions: Answers are gathered from several parts of the text and
put together to make meaning. • Author and You: These questions are based on information provided in the text but the
student is required to relate it to their own experience. Although the answer does not lie directly
in the text, the student must have read it in order to answer the question. On My Own: These questions do not require the student to have read the passage but he/
she must use their background or prior knowledge to answer the question. While your child is reading at home you can ask questions about the text (before, during and
after) to see how much they are learning from the text. Below are some question starters that
may help you when coming up with questions:
