TYPES OF NOUNS
Proper nouns. Definition:
A proper noun is the special word (or name) that we use for a
person, place or organization, like John, Marie, London, France or
Sony. A name is a noun, but a very special noun - a proper noun.
Proper nouns have special rules.
Examples:
George, Papa john´s, Norma, Charlie, Prisma moda, Siman,
Katherine, Hertz, Esmeralda.
Exercise.
Indication: identify a proper noun in the following sentences and
underline the proper noun.
1.The book War and peace is truly a great history about the pain
and glory that lives in a war.
2.Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.
3.Which is the capital city of Australia?
Common nouns.
Definition:
A common noun is a word that names people, places, things, or
ideas. They are not the names of a single person, place or thing.
Examples:
man, girl, boy, mother, father, child, person, teacher, student, cat,
dog, fish, ant, snake.
Exercise.
Indication: identify a common noun in the following sentences and
underline the common noun.
1.There are different species of fish.
2. The man was trying to steal his car.
3. The baby is crying.
Non - count nouns.
Definition:
Uncountable nouns (also called mass nouns or non-count nouns)
cannot be counted, they are not seperate objects. This means you
cannot make them plural by adding -s, because they only have a
singular form. It also means that they do not take a/an or a number
in front of them.
Example:
Love, friendship, water, rice, gold, wood, milk, happiness, peace
and idea
Exercise.
Indication: complete with non-count noun in the following
sentences.
1.We need to buy new for our bedroom .
2. Let's play some .
3,The has its own .
Count nouns.
Definition:
A noun can be countable or uncountable. Countable nouns can be
"counted", they have a singular and plural form .
Examples:
Coins, person, pennies, cent, computers, house, animals, books,
notebook, numbers.
Exercise.
Indication: complete with count noun in the following sentences.
1.Jorge sent me about Chilean .
2. This serves the best Thai in the city .
3. The during is really horrible.
Collective nouns.
Definition:
A collective noun is a noun that can be singular in form whilst
referring to a group of people or things.
Examples:
army, audience, band, choir, class, committee, crew, family, gang, jury, orchestra, police, staff, team.
Exercise.
Indication: complete with count noun in the following sentences.
1.The of the British Royal Navy was very strong in the
nineteenth century.
2.Disease reduced the farmer's from 90 to 65 cows.
3.She was attacked by a of wasps.
Concrete nouns.
Definition:
A concrete noun is the name of something or someone that we experience through our senses, sight, hearing, smell, touch or taste.
Examples:
Church,house,cat,dog,table,desktop,book,notebook,pencil,
computer.
Exercise.
Indication: identify a concrete noun in the following sentences and
underline the concrete nouns.
1.This is a table.
2.These balloons are colorful.
3.These flowers are beautiful.
Abstrac nouns.
Definition:
An abstract noun is a noun that you cannot sense, it is the name we
give to an emotion, ideal or idea. They have no physical existence, you can't see, hear, touch, smell or taste them.
Examples:
Love, peace, pain, air, hate, belief, adoration, friendship, ideas,
emotions.
Exercise.
Indication: Fill in the blanks with suitable abstract nouns. The
adjectives, verbs or nouns given in the brackets should offer clues.
1. He is a man of ……………………… (strong)
2. The people in this part of the country live in ……………………….
(poor).
3. ……………………….. to animals is a punishable offence. (cruel)
Singular nouns.
Definition:
a singular noun is a noun that refers to only one person, one place,
one thing, or one Idea.
Examples:
Girl, Boy, Mother, Father, City, Town, State, Country, Bicycle, Doll.
Exercise.
Indication: identify a singular noun in the following sentences and
underline the singular noun.
1. A library is a useful building.
2. Is it a new shelf?
3. He isn't a worker.
The regular plural nouns.
A plural noun is that in a noun in your single form is added a letter “S”.
example:
House-Houses; Dog-Dogs.
however the addition of a plural termination, can produce some changes in the script substantive:
-Nouns ending in consonant + y + and become ies: party - parties; baby - babies.
Important: nouns that end in a vowel + y are left unchanged: day - days; boy-boys .
.
-Nouns ending in - sh,-ch,-s,-z-x added the ending "-es": church-
churches; brush - brushes; box - boxes; buzz-buzzes.
-Nouns ending in - o have a regular plural form, marked "s": photo -
photos, piano-pianos.
Important: some nouns ending in-o add the ending "-s": potato -
potatoes; tomato - tomatoes; hero – heroes.
Exercise. Indication:Choose the correct form of the plural for each noun.
1. The plural of "way" is

Irregular plural nouns.
A plural nouns that ending in -f or fe convert-f-v and added a brand
"-s": half - halves, knife - knives; leaf - leaves; life - lives; shelf -
shelves; thief - thieves; wife - wives; wolf - wolves.
Note: Any other nouns ending in-f (e) having a regular plural: cliff-cliffs.
Examples of irregular nouns
child - children; foot - feet; goose - geese; man - men; mouse -
mice; ox - oxen; person - people; tooth - teeth; woman - women,
etc.
Exercise. Indication:Choose the correct form of the plural for each noun.
