ARCHITECTURE
Solar Desalination Plant
Perfect for the coastal desert region such as the Kalahari, Namib and Arabian deserts, the Solar Desalination Plant diverts coastal ocean water into rich minerals and clean drinking water. Utilizing solar and desert heat, water ocean water is evaporated and condensated through a cogeneration mechanism. Solar energy also powers a distillator that sorts mineral and water.
The Solar Desalination Plant is part of an ongoing series of design initiatives devised by my personal interest in the subject matter. The studies are based on everyday observation of basic human needs, such as clean water and energy. All design con-cepts within this investigation are based on one guiding principle: to sustainably utilize the most abundant natural resources surrounds us to harvest energy. These environmental sculptures not only solve problems but they also accentuate their habitats.

Buoyant Beacon
The only element of nature that ceases to be motionless is the oceans tidal wave. As long as the gravitational pull between us and the moon exist, we will have the buoyancy force of ocean. The Buoyant Beacon is shaped to optimize for maximum performance on water. Each module is shaved down to have the maximum water contact surface yet minimum amount of friction with each other. By embed-ding rotor and generator inside each module, energy is generated each cycle of ups and downs via tidal wave.
Photosynthesis Blanket
Photosynthesis by definition is a metabolic pathway that converts light energy into chemical energy. The Photosynthesis Blanket works from the same theory. It is a sheet of cable net cladded with foliage. By extracting carbon dioxide from air, it generates volumes of fresh air when interacted with sun. When folded and morphed into inhabitable spaces, it creates a micro-climate within, best suitable for temporary shelter in open natural habitat.
The Breathing Gills
Inspired by aquatic organisms, The Breathing Gills is a reversed respira-tion organ. It functions opposites to how a real gill works: by extracting oxygen from water and excreting carbon dioxide. The gills extracts carbon dioxides from air, releases them into an ocean bed of algae. Algae absorb carbon dioxides then produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis. The gills will then re-lease oxygen back into atmosphere when completing the breathing cycle.

Diaspora
In Chinese, the word Diasporas, has literally translated as separation of the root residence. Historically and culturally, Chinese forms dense clustered communities. Their neighbourhoods are formed along narrow streets or little river canals that embraces this intensified proximity and we celebrates its intimacy.
In the Mood for love narrates a story that occurs in a similar claustrophobic environment that brings out the best of proximity tension between characters that occupies in the very same space. All the activities are defined by moments of interaction and avoidance along these linear corridors

The pace of life in Chinatown is of hectic and chaotic at best. In the Mood for Love captures the similar madness in a dense urban life, yet crafting intricate moments that allows one to savor this rush slowly, like freezing motion in time. The Museum of Diaspora aim to achieve the same goal. Allowing a respite in the midst of noise. The Musuems appearance should utimately be an iconogra-phy and a testament to its content within.

Duallity + Contrast The studios objective is through the analysis of director Wong Kar Wais file In The Mood for Love, one can extract performative principles that is appropriate for the construct of our building and site. Studying various scenes and (3) specific sequence of the film, it is determined that both the set and character exhibit tensions and contrast that are felt strongly but only subtly visible. The use of Foreground, Background, Stillness, Movement, Positive and Negative will be the guiding design narrative.

Seismic Design - Isolation Base Diagram
Having endured the most devastating earthquake in history, Sichuan is ready to recover- by reassuming its important role as a cultural, geo-political and educational epic center within China. Like the old proverb says, One bamboo can easily break; three pairs of them would stay straight. Bamboo being one of the most sustainable material within the building industry, it symbolizes resilience, the ability to recover from misfortune, change, stress and deformation. Like a forest of bamboo, this high school is a symbol of resilience, power and unity of the Sichuan citizens. The school design intends to utilize the same concept as bundled clusters of bamboos, applied structurally, aesthetically and sustainably. Sichuan being one of the worlds largest bamboo producers, the schools exterior is cladded with bamboo screens which are locally har-vested, manufactured and transported. Sitting on an Isolation Base with baring plates underneath the ground floor plate, classrooms are arranged in multiple cores adding stability and lateral resistance. The high school is organized into a campus with three ringed-road connecting and enclosing the plaza, sports field, male, female and faculty dorms, an indoor gymnasium that is convertible to an auditorium. A central campus lawn is covered over the isolation base for the main academic building, creating a sense of place for arrival. A designated school bus drop-off is placed to prevent mixing of peak hour traffic. The multiple classroom core clusters not only serve as structural stabilizer, the arrangement creates unconventional public spaces for interaction. Creativity and ideas are generated through increasing communication between faculty and students. A generous corridor of student lockers is lined behind each classroom, allowing constant interaction. By pulling away the classrooms away from the building face, glare is minimized and each classroom shares an equal amount of diffused natural light and views. Classrooms with custom integrated table and seating are stacked in theatre style seating to allow minimum space use and maximum efficiency.

1The competition objective is to redesign a lighting solution for the currently dilapidated church. Design inspirations for this space came from all the observations during my travel as a student while I was in Italy. I have visited numerous churches and cathedrals. Two things in com-mon are 1)the quality, intensity and volumes of light that gets filtered through all the colorful stained glass high above, and 2)the warm amber glow at the back of the altar from clusters of candle flames.
To artificially recreate this atmosphere near the altar, 3 pairs of in-grade LED up-lights are synchronized to emulate the vibrant amber glow from candles. Above, to honor the birth of Christ as this church was built for, and to dramatize a voluminous light effect, a custom light sculpture is built with suspended steel cable and fiber optics ends. Sculptural geometries are mapped by tracing the solar path on December 25th between 9am to 6pm. The result is an overhead halo intertwined with web of light strings.
