In other words, bugtong ug panganay mao

THINK a minute… Of all the jobs in news and journalism, being a war correspondent is the most dangerous. Some reporters are captured as prisoners, some escape, and some die. Young 25-year-old Leonard Spencer was a reporter for the London Morning Post. His assign-ment was the Boer War in South Africa. Leonard was riding a train to the front-lines of battle when sud-denly there was a violent crash. The Boer army had ambushed and attacked this British train. During the shooting, Leonard jumped out into all the bullets and exploding shells to help clear the train tracks. In fact, after the train pulled out of this trap, with many British soldiers saved, the

Do the right thingone man who was left be-hind to face the enemy alone was this young news-paper reporter. He was captured and put into the Pretoria prison, which was world famous for its high security and few escapes. Amazingly, young Leonard escaped this famous prison. Yet he still had 300 miles of enemy territory to survive and find his way through to freedom. He walked alone for many days and nights, continually dodging enemy soldiers. Tired, hun-gry and thirsty, he finally reached a mining town and knocked on the door of the only British person living there. Leonard was then smuggled onto a train to the British consul and safety. You know what’s really

amazing? Leonard Spencer is not remembered for his bravery in the South Afri-can Boer War. You see, this young journalist who saved a train of British soldiers and escaped the enemy against nearly impossible odds, continued to do the impossible the rest of his

life. We know him as Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, England’s brave leader and Prime Minister who helped save Europe and the world from Adolf Hitler’s evil rule. You see, our life and character starts right now. If we don’t choose to do the right thing now, we definitely won’t choose to do it later when there’s more risk. And Jesus is the one who can give you the willpower you need to start changing now. Then you’ll start doing the right thing, no matter what it costs you. So won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for not always choosing to live His right way? Then ask Him to take charge of your character everyday, for the rest of your life? Just Think a Minute...

MARAWI City - The Bureau of Fisher-ies and Aquatic Resources in the Au-tonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BFAR-ARMM) has rolled-out P1.9 million, Monday, for some 400 seaweed farmers in the coastal town of Parang, Maguindanao province.

seaweed farmers get P1.9M from BfaR-aRMM

By Apipa P. Bagumbaran

The project is intended to provide the said farmers with more sustainable livelihood and to boost the re-gion’s seaweed production, said BFAR-ARMM Director Janice Musali.

Beneficiary-farmers will also receive farm inputs for some 120 hectares of seaweed farm. Another 50 hectares is expected to open up soon, according to Director Musali.

ARMM ranks first in the country, in terms of seaweed production with bulk coming from the region’s island provinces, especially Tawi-Tawi.

BFAR officials estimate that the region still has around 20, 017 hectares of potential seaweed farm area.

BFAR-ARMM signed a contract with the Kilusang Magkaibigan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KMMPC) for the procurement, supply, and delivery of seaweed input materials after a bidding process.

Director Musali said it was the first time for their of-fice to fully observe government procurement procedure based on Republic Act 9184 otherwise known as “An Act Providing for the Modernization, Standardization and Regulation of the Procurement Activities of the Government and for Other Purposes.”

Lawyer Mimbalawag Mangutara, finance director of ARMM governor’s office, commended BFAR-ARMM for conforming to the standing policy of the present ARMM reform government of transparency and accountability. (ARMMCommGroup/APB-PIA10/asf)

BUTUAN City - The City Civ-il Registrar’s Office (CCRO), in partnership with Pag-IBIG Fund-Caraga Region, is gearing for the Mass Civil Wedding come Valentine’s Day at the newly-renovated Guingona Park.

City Civil Registrar Judith Alvizo-Calo said, participat-ing couples will be exempted from charges, including the issuance of the Affidavit of Cohabitation.

She Calo added, this year’s mass civil wedding is extra special because Pag-IBIG Fund Caraga Region, aside from providing free wed-ding rings, will also raffle off a brand new house for one

congress, recently, at the Training Center here to continue addressing the health needs of the local residents. BHWs serve as front-

liners in the implemen-tation of all health pro-grams and activities of the Department of Health (DOH), such as Maternal and Child Health Care, tu-

berculosis prevention and control, family planning and infectious diseases. Board Member Daniel O. Racaza, chair of the SP Committee on Health,

conducted the session on Republic Act 9211 (To-bacco Regulation Act of 2003) where smoking is banned in public places, such as parks, schools, re cre at iona l fac i l i t i e s frequented by children, hospitals, clinics, baran-gay halls, restaurants, and public utility vehicles. He pointed out that the law mandates such establishments to desig-nate smoking and non-smoking areas in their respective places, while emphasizing the hazards of smoking. “Vice Governor Enrico R. Corvera had to quit smoking after undergo-ing the angiogram and I stopped smoking due to cancer,” he said. To raise funds, the congress was also high-lighted with a Search for Miss Kalusugan Pang-kalahatan (KP) – BHW, a money contest with representatives from the different municipalities of the province and Cabad-baran City. In an interview with Nor m a A l b i v a , B H W Federation president of Agusan del Norte, she said the province has around 1,080 BHWs. She added, they regu-larly update themselves on latest health developments

during quarterly meetings where they a lso make resolutions on income-generating projects, like micro-lending and others. In Cabadbaran City, they started their micro-lending project in 1995, with a capital of P9,000 and she is proud to say that the amount has grown up to almost P1 million at present. Laurencia C. Montaus, a BHW in Poblacion 1 of the municipality of Tubay claimed, “Bisan tuod og honorarium ra ang akong nadawat, pero nalipay gihapon ko sa akong pagserbisyo kay nakatabang man ko sa health needs sa akong mga kabarangay, sama sa pag-conduct og mother’s class aron tudloan sila kung unsa ang insaktong pag-areglar sa ilang mga anak, family planning, ‘operation t imbang’ sa mga bata ug uban pa.” The event was a lso graced by Vice Governor Enrico R. Corvera, Board Members Rey Jamboy, Lo-rito Maragañas, Fortunato Rosales , Dr. El izabeth Campado, Dr. Pio Baga-luyos, BHW Coordina-tor Jacquiline Galan, and barangay officials of the province. ences side by side with a vigorous promotion for ad-ditional investments to the city. “Big hotels are starting to locate to our city making our city more equipped to handle bigger events. We need to encourage the staging of more huge events and meet-ings to keep a steady flow of conventioners and tourists in our area,” Mr. Paguio said. Promote CDO Foundation encourages and supports the protection and development of Cagayan de Oro City’s cul-tural identity and heritage and works for a unified investment promotion of the city. Promote CDO also aims to highlight Cagayan de Oro City’s strategic role as a trade and service hub of Northern Mindanao thus creating a positive image of the city as a good investment site wherein business processes and procedures are stream-lined.

DSWD 62nd Anniversary – The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 10 celebrates its 62nd Anniversary, with the theme, “Sama-samang Husay, Patungong Tagumpay.” Highlighting the event are various sports activities for employees and the giving of plaques of recognition to the strong partners in project imple-mentations. ThE Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) posted strong business volume and revenue growth in 2012 as the Philippines likewise grew at a faster pace compared to other Asean economies. BPI’s unaudited net income for full year 2012 reached P16.3 billion, a 27% increase over the P12.8 billion posted in 2011. This translated to a Return on Equity of 17.5% and a Return on Assets of 1.9%. Total resources reached P985 billion or 17% higher than the previous year as the Bank’s core businesses remained solid. Deposits expanded by a healthy 18% to P802 billion while assets under management was P743 billion or 11% higher, bringing total intermediated funds to P1.5 trillion. The net loan portfolio increased by 16% to P527 billion as all markets sustained double digit growths: 17% for both the consumer segment and the middle market/SMEs, and 12% for the top tier corporates. Asset quality continued to improve with its 30-day NPL ratio down to 1.46% from last year’s 1.87%. Net interest income rose by 6% as the average asset base went up by P64 billion. Net interest margin had a slight 10 bps contraction as spreads were challenged following the 100 bps cut in policy rates last year as well as the non remuneration of banks’ reserve requirement deposits with the BSP. Non-interest income was 25% better mainly due to higher trading gain on se-curities sold, other operating income, and fees & commissions. Operating expense growth was man-aged at 6% coming from technology and occupancy related expenses and regulatory costs. Impairment losses were at P2.9 bil-lion due to additional provisions for non credit related items and foreclosed assets. BPI’s market capitalization was at P338 billion as of end 2012. The Bank remains adequately capitalized with a Basel II Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 14.2% and Tier 1 CAR of 12.8%. BPI President and CEO Aurelio R. Mon-tinola III commented, “2012 was a banner year for BPI, as we generated record profits and exceeded our return on equity goal of 16%. We will aim for 12 to 15% loan growth in 2013. However, given significant securities trading gains last year and an even lower interest rate regime this year, our challenge for 2013 will be to deliver a meaningful earnings growth after a record 2012 performance.”
