Muslim clerics, Islamic scholars and MNLF also pick own choiceCOTABATO CITY – The Autonomous Region in MuslimMindanao has endorsed Sulu Governor Sakur Tan andLanao del Sur lawmaker Ziaur Adiong as the government’sofficial candidates for the ARMM gubernatorial and vicegubernatorial race in general elections in May next year.

The ARMM RegionalLegislative Assembly haspassed a resolution endorsingthe two political leaders toPresident Benigno Aquinoand to the Liberal Party towhich both Tan and Adiongnow belong.

STRONG MUSLIMSUPPORT

“The Honorable SakurTan having been in the politi-cal arena and public servicefor many years...has provenhimself to be a dedicated andtrustworthy leader not only tothe people of the province butalso to the leaders of the ar-eas the ARMM. A man withstrong political will, his ac-complishments are notewor-thy, especially in the field ofpeace and conflict resolution.The stability of the peace andorder in his area has trans-lated into more reforms.Economy, livelihood, educa-tion, infrastructures and othercomponents of developmentare among them which havesignificantly improved in Suluas a result of Hon. Tan’s greatefforts and accomplishments,”the ARMM said in a resolu-tion obtained by the MindanaoExaminer.

It added: “We all believethat as public servant, hisleadership manifested by hisdeeds must not only benefitthe people of his home prov-ince of Sulu, but must also beemulated in the entireARMM. Therefore, it is ourearnest desire that GovernorSakur Tan will be the LiberalParty’s official bet for Re-

gional Governor in next year’selections.”

The ARMM resolutionalso cited Adiong, saying, hischaracter is a clear manifes-tation of selflessness, sincer-ity, dedication and commit-ment to public service. “Andit is high time that we need ayoung and dynamic leader tobe our next Regional ViceGovernor.”

MNLF WOMEN’SCOMMITTEE

The BangsamoroWomen’s Committee of theMoro National LiberationFront also passed a separateresolution urging PresidentAquino to choose Tan for theARMM gubernatorial race,citing the politician’s unblem-ished political track recordsand his commitment to peacenot only in Sulu, but in theentire Mindanao as well.

“Governor Tan is verysensitive to the needs and con-cerns of those in the war-af-fected areas, especially MNLFmembers who were sidelinedby the Peace Agreement andtirelessly working to open op-portunities for them that theirdignity and pride be re-gained.”

Movement for SustainableGood Governance, an um-brella organization of dozensof civil society groups in thesouthern Philippines, passeda resolution and a manifestoduring a huge summit andendorsed Tan to be thegovernment’s gubernatorialbet in the ARMM elections.

The Muslim region iscomposed of Basilan, Sulu,Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao andLanao provinces, includingthe cities of Lamitan andMarawi.

“Gov. Sakur Tan has allthe good qualities of a trueleader and as representative ofthe Muslim people; we haveendorsed the Sulu governor tobe the official candidate of theAquino administration to theupcoming ARMM elections inMay.”

“The civil society orga-nizations strongly support theleadership of Gov. Sakur Tanbecause of his genuine anduntainted political career andsincerity to serve the peopleand bring peace, progress and

development not only to Suluprovince, but to the whole ofthe ARMM,” said Dr.Amildasa Annil, the leaderconvener and president of theMovement for SustainableGood Governance.

The manifesto waspassed following the 1stZamboanga-Sulu-Tawi-TawiCSO Summit held inZamboanga City. Some 300CSO members from Basilan,Sulu, Tawi-Tawi,Maguindanao andZamboanga City participatedin the summit sponsored bytwo of the country’s largestsardine canning factories, theMega Sardines and AmadeoFishing Corporation.

STRONG CLAMOUR “There is a strong

clamour from various Muslimcivil society organizations andBangsamoro people for theSulu governor to govern theARMM and bring peace anddevelopment to the region andprogress to all its provincesand constituents. GovernorTan is the only leader we seefit to be the next ARMM gov-ernor,” said Ustadz NoreenPallong.

Pallong, an influentialMuslim religious leader inBasilan, said provincial con-stituents are strongly support-ing Tan.

Get your ICC stickers now, motorbike riders urgedZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Trade andIndustry reminded motorcycle riders to get Import Com-modity Certification stickers for their protective head gears.

ICC stickers are compulsory for all helmets prescribedby the Land Transportation Office and it also applies toall motorcycle stores selling crash helmets. Provincial DTIdirector Rolando Acuña said they are now issuing ICCstickers in Zamboanga City. He said some 300 ICC stick-ers have been issued so far in Zamboanga.

He said applications for ICC stickers are for riders,motorcycle owners, passengers who purchased helmetsbefore the implementation of the Republic Act 10054 nextyear.

Republic Act 10054 mandates all motorcycle ridersand their passengers to wear standard protective helmets.Those who fail to wear the prescribed helmet would befined P1,500 for the first offense and up to P10,000 forthe fourth offense, including the confiscation of driver’slicense.

The penalty is higher for stores which would sell mo-torcycle helmets without the ICC sticker.

The Republic Act 10054 or the Motorcycle HelmetAct was signed on March 23, 2010 to secure the safety ofdrivers of motorcycles and their passengers from injuri-ous effects of fatal or life threatening accidents and crashes.(Marvin Saradat)

PAGADIAN CITY - Aschool principal has won amajor people power victoryby forcing the local govern-ment of Pagadian City in thesouthern Philippine provinceof Zamboanga del Sur to takeaction to save students andteachers from the threat of animpending landslide, accord-ing to Change.org Cam-paigner Christine Roque.

Roque said more than2,600 people signed a petitionon Change.org started by OttoLingue National High Schoolprincipal Tess Tarranza, whowas frustrated at the lack ofaction by authorities to fix theruptured landslide wall of theschool in a village calledLower Sibatang.

Tarranza and Faye Reyes,of Checkmyschool.orglaunched the petition onChange.org just a week agoand it already gathered morethan 1,600 signatures in aspan of 24 hours and quicklybecame viral on Facebook andTwitter, she said in a state-ment sent to the regionalnewspaper Mindanao Exam-iner.

She said Tarranzalaunched the petition as a last-ditch effort after countlessappeals to authorities wereignored.

"I believe everything hap-pens for a reason. If not forthis petition, these local offi-cials would not have re-sponded as urgently as theyhave done now," Reyes said.

The ruptured landslidewall of the school is on theverge of collapse putting anentire class of 4th year stu-dents and teachers in danger.Huge amount of rocks and soilhave already started to erodeamid heavy rains that comealmost every afternoon.

The students, teachersand lab facilities have beenremoved from the unsafebuilding and are transferred tosafer and higher grounds.They will temporarily holdtheir classes in tents while of-ficial work is underway to ad-dress the problem in the long

term. The building and land-slide wall are now condemnedand declared off limits.

“I am feeling very happyand relieved because of thelocal government’s commit-ment to save our school, aswell as the overwhelming sup-port we received online,”Tarranza said.

“This is a significant vic-tory because it shows howpeople with the least power insociety are empowered to holdpublic officials accountableand compel them to take ac-tion. Change.org has played avital role in facilitating a num-ber of supporters for the peti-tion. Foremost, it becomes anavenue where our small voiceechoed out loud to the con-cerned individuals and gov-ernment agencies."

In an open letter postedon Change.org, Tarranazawrote: “Otto Lingue NationalHigh School has lately en-countered a serious problemdue to the destroyed portionof a Riprap project in which,if not given any immediateaction, may cause correspond-ingly the destruction of thelives of students, teachers andschool property. As it hap-pened last July 17, 2012 andup to the present, nothing hasbeen done except for the ocu-lar survey of the CityEngineer's office, PagadianCity with its recommenda-tions. Considering the fre-quency of the heavy rains inthe place where the school islocated and latest worseningof the situation, hence, an ap-peal for sincere help is beingasked through any individualor organization.”

“With the recent Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)meeting on August 4, 2012,there were parents who havealready expressed their appre-hension regarding the situa-tion that they have planned tolet their childrein transfer toother nearby schools. Like-wise, there were parents whowould like that there an inves-tigation to be conducted re-garding the construction of the

In a recent round tablediscussion, different stake-holders including city engi-neers, councillors, educationofficials, nongovernmentalorganizations, parents, villageand school officials have out-lined several short and long-term solutions, including di-saster preparedness trainingfor the students and a programof work to be drafted by CityEngineer’s Office for theschool based on the recom-mendations by the represen-tatives of Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau of the De-partment of Environment andNatural Resources.

Roque said: “This peti-tion shows that ordinary citi-zens can mobilize through theinternet and come together tomake a difference even in themost remote communities.”

OFWs told to keep away fromanti-Islam film protests

MANILA – An overseas Philippine migrants group has cau-tioned Filipinos working abroad, especially in Yemen, Libyaand Egypt, to stay vigilant and away from crowds protestingthe film "Innocence of Muslims".

The movie, believed tohave been made by US film-maker Nakoula BasseleyNakoula, who uses the nameSam Bacile, sparked riots inthe three countries. Nakoulawas taken in for a voluntaryinterview with probation of-ficials in Los Angeles.

According to the Los An-geles Times, Nakoula, whowas convicted on bank fraudcharges, violated terms of hisprobation in relation to thevideo and its uploading ontothe web. Nakoula has told theAssociated Press he was a lo-gistics manager on the "Inno-cence of Muslims" movie, notthe director. He told a Copticbishop Thursday that he had

no role in it, the clergymantold The Times.

John LeonardMonterona, regional coordi-nator of the Migrante-MiddleEast, said in view of the es-calating protests at variousUS diplomatic posts in theMiddle East, it is necessaryfor all overseas Filipinoworkers in those countries totake necessary precautionsand limit unnecessary move-ments within these countries.

“To emphasize the needto be safe and to secure our-selves from harm and violentacts, we strongly urge our fel-low OFWs to stay clear ofprotesting crowds especiallynear the diplomatic posts of

the US and similar establish-ments as targets of massiveprotests,” Monterona said ina statement sent to the re-gional newspaper MindanaoExaminer.

Monterona said thatbased on their initial assess-ment, the Muslim protestsmay snowball to other middleeastern countries such asSaudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar,UAE where there are largeconcentrations of OFWs.

“Once again, westrongly advised our fellowFilipinos in the Middle Eastto be respectful of the hostgovernment state religion andtheir symbols,” Monteronasaid, adding that Filipinosabroad must refrain frommaligning any religion andtheir prophets as what Inno-cence of Muslims had disre-spectfully conveyed.

“Our Muslim brotherswon’t rise up in arms fornothing. Certainly, the movieInnocence of Muslims haddone wrong or maliciouslyconveyed that is somethingprotesting or even revoltingcourtesy of some war-mongerUS propagandists,” he added.

PAGADIAN CITY – ISANG investment trading schemeang pinagkakaguluhan ngayon sa Pagadian City saZamboanga del Sur province dahil sa malaking interestna umano’y ibinibigay nito sa mga nahuhumaling sahinihinalang scam.

Ayon sa ilang mganakapanayam ng Abante aynagbibigay umano ng 31%hanggang 50% tubo sa looblamang ng dalawang lingo salahat ng kapital ng bawatisang investor ang nasa likodng naturang trading nanagsimula ngayon taon.

“Malaki ang interest at sakatunayan ay nakuha ko nganga yun kapital kong P5,000at ngayon ay may P31,000pondo pa akong naiwan atnasa investment pa rin ito atpatuloy pa rin na tumutuboang interests,” ani Eli Umabona ilang lingo pa lamangnagsimula sa nasabing invest-ment trading.

“Marami ang nag-investat pati mga pulitiko atordinaryong tao, yan mga tri-cycle drivers, ay talagang maymga inilagay na kapital satrading dito sa Pagadian. Atang sabi nila ay sa overseasraw ini-invest ang kapitalkaya malaki raw ang interestnito,” dagdag pa ni Umabo saisang panayam.
