Templates make it easy for teachers to create quizzes to test understanding and help prepare students for standards-based exams. Options include the ability to see in real time who understands the lesson and who needs help. The student handsets make test-taking another interactive learning experience, not just a chore. Feedback from the assessments can be used formatively to create lessons directed at specific needs.

2. Professional Development

• Improve teacher quality.

How MimioClassroom Qualifies Mimio professional development is based on the research finding that the teacher is the most important factor in ensuring the success of interactive teaching technologies (Marzano & Haystead, 2009). This research demonstrated that interactive whiteboards are most effective when the teachers using them are trained. There is a clear focus on understanding what the software has to offer, content, assessment, and using student feedback formatively.

MimioTraining™ resources provide multiple options for ongoing professional development, giving teachers many ways to remain current. The products themselves contribute to improving teacher quality because they offer innovative approaches to lesson planning, teaching, and assessment. Teachers literally learn on the job. MimioTraining On-Demand gives teachers unlimited free access to reference cards, guides, video tutorials, and Quick Learn recordings

that cover basic to advanced topics. MimioTraining Quick Learn offers live, online interactive Web-based training sessions. MimioTraining Masters offers three sequential courses and provides a community of technology-using educators. The MimioTraining Certified program provides fee-based training for school and district tech specialists who wish to become qualified to successfully train teachers on how to get the most from their Mimio investment.

MimioAcademy™ professional development offers educators an excellent and affordable way to get up and running quickly with Mimio interactive technologies. Mimio specialists will work closely on-site with a school to ensure its specific needs are met. The programs are designed for training on MimioClassroom products, including MimioStudio software. Sessions range from core to advanced skill levels, and incorporate hands-on time to facilitate teacher engagement.

Finally, the online MimioConnect interactive teaching community provides peer-to-peer guidance and ongoing support. The website includes lesson plans and activities, member forums, events, and an Ask a Master feature. Taken together, Mimio’s training offerings provide substantial opportunities for professional development.

3. Research-Based Methods

• Provide access to scientifically based instructional materials.

• Provide access to effective instructional strategies.

How MimioClassroom Qualifies The importance of increasing teaching effectiveness and student engagement is a core belief of Mimio. The founders are MIT-trained engineers who were determined to use technology in the most innovative ways possible to support effective classroom outcomes.

MimioClassroom instructional strategies are based on research and sound teaching principles that include time on task, interactivity, and student engagement – all of which have been shown to contribute to increased student achievement. “Strategies That Impact Student Achievement,” identified by Marzano and Pickering (2001), include using questions and advance organizers, the use of nonlinguistic representations,

setting objectives and providing feedback, reinforcing effort and giving praise, summarizing, and homework and practice. These strategies can be included in instruction with the MimioClassroom devices, and lessons available on the MimioConnect website follow these principles.

Mimio has also been recognized nationally with multiple awards for effectiveness. For example:

• SIIA CODie Award 2011 for interactive teaching technology

• Best in Tech 2011 for whiteboard solutions

• 2009 Instructor Teacher’s Pick Award for interactive classrooms

4. Academic Achievement

• Provide intervention and supplemental instructional materials to increase student academic achievement.

How MimioClassroom Qualifies The MimioClassroom family of products is based on years of research and classroom success. Mimio is a global leader in interactive teaching technologies, and has garnered numerous educational awards and worldwide recognition over the years, including Best in Tech, CODie, and Red Dot awards. Through innovative engineering and education research, the company has developed a fully integrated system of teaching tools that allows flexibility for teachers and more active participation by students, so that they improve their learning.

Research indicates that engaged time on task is associated with a positive impact on student achievement (Time-on-Task, 2012). MimioClassroom products, when used together, positively impact student achievement by creating a classroom environment in which students remain engaged and motivated. The tools that compose the MimioClassroom suite work together, keeping students participating and on task longer, and increasing the amount and quality of instructional time.

The MimioStudio software helps teachers create interesting and interactive lessons that appeal to a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. The technology provides alternate pathways to learning, so classrooms with kinesthetic, visual, and audio learning styles are all accommodated. MimioStudio software enables instruction to be more personalized and differentiated, and it supports individual, small-group, and whole-class instructional formats. MimioPad pen tablets connect wirelessly to the fixed MimioBoard and portable MimioTeach interactive whiteboards, leaving teachers free to move around the classroom and engage with learners. MimioPad wireless tablets also enable students with limited mobility to participate without going to the whiteboard. Student handsets make learning another interactive experience with MimioVote assessment. Teachers can ask questions and get instant feedback, and they can see in real time who’s “getting” a concept and who needs help. With the MimioView document camera, students can instantly see high-resolution documents and live video, which can be recorded, annotated, and saved for future student playback to reinforce concepts. Students no longer have to take notes, since the MimioCapture ink recorder allows the teacher to collect lesson notes and send them to students later. The MimioCapture recorder can also be used to create homework or project assignments.

Using the MimioTeach, MimioBoard, MimioVote, MimioView, MimioCapture, and MimioPad tools along with MimioStudio software, teachers can create individualized lessons, exercises, and instructions that are tailored to a student’s specific needs. And since the whole-group instruction lessons are saved, they can be used as supplemental materials to reinforce concepts when working with a small group or with individual students.
